Voices of Omaha gave its first performance of Handel's "Messiah" on December 14, 1969, with soloists and orchestra under the direction of the late Leota Sneed Strong. Since then, the choir has enjoyed the leadership of artistic directors: Thomas Brantigan, Michael Dryver, Z. Randall Stroope, Greg Zielke, Stanley E. Schmidt, Edward B. Hurd, and Paul Koenig.
The 1969 concert was a free gift to the community with no admission charge - a tradition which continues to this day. To offset expenses, chorus members pay dues, hold fundraisers, and even pay for the poinsettias on the stage. The audience is invited to assist by participating in a free-will offering.
Chorus membership is open to all members of the community, drawing singers from Omaha and the surrounding area for a 50-mile radius. No audition is required for membership. Two charter members still sing in the chorus, Sharon Struve, and Gloria Taber.

"Messiah," George Frideric Handel's most successful and best-known oratorio, was composed in twenty-four days, from August 22-September 14, 1741. It was first performed at a concert given for charitable purposes at Dublin, Ireland, on April 13, 1742, with Handel conducting the performance in person. As the centuries have passed, a considerable number of vocal scores have been made after Handel's initial work. However, the present edition follows Handel's original score, with slight deviations that have been inserted and become traditional authority.
Some of us remember when it was first performed by the Warren Civic Chorus, or when and where we first heard this magnificent work. We hope to maintain this traditional event with the support of members of the community.
