Pieces of 8

Powerful, entertaining and bursting with energy, this contemporary a cappella octet blends familiar sounds to create its own expression of American vocal music. The ensemble's voices -- pairs of sopranos, altos, tenors and basses -- combine in rich harmony to create a seamless blend of sound. Saluting the boundless and unpredictable American spirit, Pieces of 8 combines classical music influences with the sounds of jazz, pop, rock, Reggae, doo-wop, gospel and soul to create a multilayered, nearly orchestral texture. Pieces of 8 was founded by Charles Mead, the ensembles artistic director, with support from the Professional Studies Program at the St. Louis Symphony Community Music School (formerly the St. Louis Conservatory and School for the Arts).

Pied Pipers

Originally consisting of eight members, The Pied Pipers had their greatest success after nearly half of the members left the group. The remaining Pipers (Billy Wilson, Chuck Lowry, Jo Stafford, and her then-husband John Huddleston) joined the Tommy Dorsey Band in 1939, backing Sinatra on many classic recordings. In 1942 The Pied Pipers broke away from Dorsey, and Huddleston joined the army, to be replaced by Hal Hopper, one of the original eight members. The group backed Johnny Mercer on several tracks during the early 40s, including "Candy" and "Blues in the Night." Their first single ("Deacon Jones"/"Pistol Packin' Mama") was released in 1943. Stafford had become quite busy with her solo career and left the group in 1944, to be replaced by June Hutton. Throughout the rest of the decade The Pied Pipers charted frequently, yet their popularity waned in the '50s.

Pilgrim Travellers

The Pilgrim Travelers were formed by Joe Johnson and the Davis brothers in Houston in the early 1930's. By 1942, the group had moved to Los Angeles and was joined by Kylo Turner and Keith Barber. In the early years they mimicked the style of the Golden Gates' jubilee and the Soul Stirrers' gospel. Eventually the excellence of their leads set them apart. In 1945, J. W. Alexander joined the group and became their manager. Under Alexander, the group became more flamboyant in their showmanship often wrecking the churches they sang in, while charming the women. In 1947 the group made some records for small L.A. labels. Later that year Art Rupe signed them to Specialty Records just after they got a new baritone, Jesse Whitaker. Rupe created one of the first companies to nurture African-American gospel music. Originally, the Pilgrim Travelers were recorded a cappella.

Eventually, the floor was miked to pick up their percussive foot tapping which was marketed as walking rhythm spirituals. The group enjoyed immense popularity as a result. Between 1947 and 1956, the Pilgrim Travelers recorded over a hundred sides on Specialty. During their reign, they influenced such singers as Ray Charles, Lou Rawls and Sam Cooke. Though the members of the group have faded from memory, their musical legacy will live on.

Pioneer Valley Gay Men's Chorus

The Pioneer Valley Gay Men's Chorus (PVGMC) has, since 1993, presented a positive image of gay men to the community and provided a warm, accepting environment for gay men to create music.

The Chorus accepts new members on a rotating basis. We begin rehearsals each fall, which is therefore the optimal time for new members to join. The only requirement is that members be comfortable singing under the banner of the Pioneer Valley Gay Men's Chorus. At the moment the audition process is simply to join us for rehearsals and allow the conductor to place you in the appropriate vocal part.

Pitches Be Crazy

In simple terms, we are a cover band rockin' some of the biggest hits of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. We bang around with our instruments (aka, our voices) and make music that will have you saying, "OH SNAP, That's my jam!" Edgy and raw in our arrangements and presentation, we add those juicy harmonies and bone rattling percussion and bass old school, making PBC Acappella very unique across the a cappella landscape.

Pittsburgh Camerata

Founded in 1974, the Camerata is proud to be Western Pennsylvania's longest standing professional vocal ensemble. It has evolved over the years, beginning as a small group of volunteers riding the "early music" wave of the 1970s. We continue to love early music, but now also explore new repertoire, venues and programmatic concepts.

How did we get to be over forty years old? Throughout its history, the Camerata has enjoyed strong artistic leadership, talented singers and dedicated volunteers. University of Pittsburgh professor Arthur Wenk founded the ensemble, followed by Gayle Clark Kirkwood, who led it from 1987-1996. Rebecca Rollett took the helm in 1998 and directed the group into the 21st century and beyond, retiring in April 2016. Mark Anderson was appointed as Artistic Director in May 2016 and continues to guide, cajole and inspire the vocal ensemble and organization to new heights.

Pittsburghers

Tommy Palamone had been in quartets and trios throughout the 1930s and '40s. One evening in 1946, he threw together a quartet and went to a meeting of the Society's Pittsburgh Chapter. The foursome-Harry Conte on tenor, Tommy at lead, his cousin Fred as bari, and "Turp" Marcanello at bass-caught the attention of Pittsburgh's premiere barbershopper, Molly Reagan. Reagan decided to coach the group, dubbed the Allen Club Four. The group dubbed the Allen Club Four. The group went to the Society's 1946 convention, where it placed a respectable sixth, but soon afterwards, "Turp" left to sing with a band and was replaced by Bill Conway on bass. Then cousin Fred left the group, and they had to find a new baritone. But the new guy backed out of a New Years' engagement at the last minute. Desperate for yet another bari, they called Jiggs Ward. Did he have a tux ... and a maroon tie?

Platters

One of the leading R&B vocal groups of the 50s, they were the first black group to be accepted as a major chart act and, for a short time, were the most successful vocal group in the world. The Platters were formed in Los Angeles in 1953 by entrepreneur/songwriter Buck Ram (21 November 1907, Chicago, Illinois, USA, d. 1 January 1991). Through his ownership of the Platters' name, Ram was able to control the group throughout their career, and his talent for composing and arranging enabled the Platters to make a lasting impression upon popular music. Their original line-up, Tony Williams (b. 5 April 1928, Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA, d. 14 August 1992, New York, USA; lead tenor), David Lynch (b. 1929, St. Louis, Missouri, USA, d. 2 January 1981; tenor), Alex Hodge (baritone) and Herb Reed (b. 1931, Kansas City, Missouri, USA; bass), recorded unsuccessfully in 1954, precipitating the arrival of two new members, Paul Robi (b. 1931, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, d. 2 January 1989), who replaced Hodge, and Zola Taylor (b. 18 March 1934, Los Angeles, California, USA, d. 30 April 2007, Riverside, California, USA; contralto). Signed to Mercury Records, the Platters secured their first hit in 1955 when 'Only You' reached the US Top 5, an effortlessly light performance that set the pattern for subsequent releases, including 'The Great Pretender', 'My Prayer' and 'Twilight Time', each of which reached number 1 in the US charts. 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' (previously a hit for Paul Whiteman in 1934), which was an international number 1 hit single in 1958-59, highlighted their smooth delivery and arguably remains the group's best-loved release.

Plumbers of Rome

While serving as court musicians/crepe chefs at the court of Charles VII in the 13th century (they were not allowed to serve as the Royal Plumbers, since plumbing was at that time considered to be a form of witchcraft) the Plumbers of Rome invented a device to hurl food and concert T-shirts into the starving peasant section of the King's Concert Hall. Adapted for military use, and named the Trebuchet, this modest invention lead the French army to many victories, as well as adding to the festive atmosphere of French wedding receptions and modern day Renaissance Festivals. While history has all but forgotten the inventors of the Trebuchet, the Plumbers are commemorated in the traditional French carol ballade de l'arme romaine aim'e de plombier.
