ChorAmor

We are singers, conductors, and teachers. We first gathered to create. The singing we do gives us the opportunity to be creative, but it does far more than that. It leads to new resources that serve as an example of what we can accomplish together: scores, guide tracks, video, and audio.

The thrust of our efforts is in developing and showcasing techniques, speed, and opportunities we can carry forward into whatever comes next, whether face-to-face, at distance, or some hybrid of the two. We believe these opportunities will prove to be exponential in number and variety as individuals come together to brainstorm and solve problems.

Chord Busters

The 1941 national champions were organized in Tulsa, OK in the spring of 1940 with Virgil Dow, tenor; Bob Holbrook, lead; Bobby Greer, baritone; and Tom Masengale, bass. The next year, Norman T. "Doc" Enmeier replaced Dow, who had moved to another city.

The quartet set a goal of placing high in the SPEBSQSA national quartet contest. To meet that goal, they met on an average of four nights per week, singing from three to five hours per night. At the 1941 contest in St. Louis, after two afternoons of elimination, eleven quartets were selected to face the audience on the night of July 5. When the final

Under the direction of Michael Callahan and two assistant directors, the chorus and quartets regularly entertain a wide variety of audiences. Perhaps you heard us singing the National Anthem at a ball game, the annual Christmas show and local nursing/retirement homes, singing valentines to lovers of all ages, or the annual show called "Holliday in Harmony." We also performed for the Governor of Iowa, President Ronald Reagan and the Quad City Symphony.

The Chordbusters proudly support charitable causes, including Harmony Foundation, the YMCA and Davenport Y programs for children Camp Abe Lincoln, Toys for Tots, Churches United food pantries, Quilts of Valor, local school vocal music programs, and others. Chordettes

Formed by tenor Jinny Osborn in 1949 (whose father was national president for The Society For The Preservation And Encouragement Of Barbershop Quartet Singing In America Inc) the Chordettes - Janet Ertel, Carol Bushman and lead singer Dorothy Schwartz - got their in 1949 winning an audition for a spot on Arthur Godfrey's prestigious Talent Scouts daily TV show. Godfrey pronounced them "air worthy" and "truly radiophonic" and the girls began a four-year stint as Godfrey regulars, sticking to a traditional a cappella barbershop repertoire and even cutting some records for Columbia. Unsurprisingly they also became the new stars of the barbershop convention circuit, and when Dorothy left the Chordettes in 1951, she was replaced by barbershopper Lynn Evans from Youngstown, Ohio.

Chordiac Arrest

If you like to laugh, this is your group. Chordiac Arrest got the judges laughing so hard they let the quartet slip into the top ten in their first International contest. It was five years before the judges stopped laughing long enough to realize what they had done. By that time, Chordiac had made the Top Ten three more times and were wearing two International medals.

"Live and Well" contains a full half-hour show, complete with between-songs gags and patter, plus seven other goodies. "Second Opinion" has 14 more tunes from contest and show stage. (No, they don't do anything straight.) The famous Chordiac Arrest guarantee: If you don't laugh harder every time you hear it, we'll cheerfully consider a full refund.

Chorosynthesis Singers

The top-down approach focuses on ideals and strives to work on creating projects that move us toward those ideals on a national level. This approach involves much deliberation, conversation, and careful interaction among organizations at a national level and will be instrumental in creating models and direction for communities at a lower level.

Simultaneous to this top-down approach, Chorosynthesis is getting involved in the trenches. This second approach is key. We believe that our involvement on this practical level will help us become more aware of how we might refine the projects and models being created at the national and more abstract levels (see above). By taking these two seemingly opposite approaches, we hope to meet in the middle and to contribute to a world where the choral art and its communities are thriving and preeminent.

Chorus of the Chesapeake

The Chorus of the Chesapeake is actually the name of the performing chorus of the Dundalk Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.) , now named Barbershop Harmony Society. The chapter was incorporated in Maryland in 1957 as a non-profit educational, charitable and fraternal organization.

Originally founded to provide a musical outlet for men who desired only the finest music education and performance standards, members have always been dedicated to achieving absolute excellence in choral sound production and showmanship. Through this dedication and hard work, the Chorus of the Chesapeake has won many Mid-Atlantic District Divisional and District Chorus championships, two International chorus championships in 1961 and 1971 as well as several International level competitors in recent years. Some of the singers you see on the risers at rehearsals have been with us since 1957. Others have joined in the past few months. Virtually every singer who attends his first Dundalk rehearsal or show is somewhat "awed" by the combination of sound and choreography displayed by such a large group. However, every man you see on the risers had to start from "square one" and absorb the music and performance skills over a period of months. It obviously takes time, commitment and concentrated dedication. But when you constantly strive to remain the best in what you do, the rewards are worth every minute of it!

BHS is devoted to the concept of Everyone In Harmony, which seeks to encourage membership and participation to all singers of good character, irrespective of race, religion or gender.

Chorus of Westerly

Independent choral ensembles in the United States are not rare. Indeed, according to Chorus America, there are 12,000 of these organizations nationwide and more than 42 million Americans singing in some type of chorus, including several thousand Rhode Islanders. In this cluttered landscape, it is hard for a chorus to stand out. It is also hard to see a choral ensemble's lasting impact on its community. However, the Chorus of Westerly is unique.

Since 1959, the Chorus of Westerly (a not-for-profit performing arts organization) has offered New England music and arts programming of the very highest level of quality and excellence. In its 61 years, the Chorus has presented more than 550 performances to over 1.6 million people. The Chorus has performed over 90 major choral works always with fully professional orchestras and soloists, presented 12 major American premieres; toured internationally four times, singing in such venues as Smetana Hall, Westminster Abbey and St. Peter's Basilica, and received countless awards and recognition for its work. It has established regional traditions including Summer Pops, an event that annually attracts 25,000 people, and A Celebration of Twelfth Night, an event with over 350 performers annually. It has changed the lives of countless generations of New England residents. Over 2,500 area residents have been singing members of the Chorus, and 1,500 of them sang as children. the Chorus has purchased, restored, and expanded its own performance venue, the historic George Kent Performance Hall, and is now one of only three independent American choral organizations to own its own performance venue.

Chosen Gospel Singers

Despite notching a series of hits between the early 1950s and early '60s, the Chosen Gospel Singers remain one of the most elusive groups of gospel's golden era -- plagued by constant lineup changes, the ensemble's proper history remains sketchy at best, and even the exact involvement of their most famous alumnus, Lou Rawls, is something of a mystery. It's known that the Chosen Gospel Singers were formed in Houston in 1950, and originally consisted of J.B. Randall, Aaron Wyatt, Willie Rose, and two shadowy figures later recalled by their surnames of "Sheridan" and "Files". On the advice of manager Joe Johnson, himself a founding member of the Pilgrim Travelers, the group soon relocated to Los Angeles; upon arriving on the West Coast, the first of countless roster fluctuations struck, and in seemingly no time, Randall was the only surviving original member.

Chrismon Chorale

The Twin Cities Masters Chorale was founded by Ron White in 1992 under the name Cantati Evangelica. Now, twenty-seven years later, the mission remains the same, to present quality sacred music performances to the glory of God. Recently the vision of the chorale has expanded in three ways:

One, when appropriate and possible, to include children through college choirs as part of performances.

Two, to champion young local composers to commission new works for the choral.

hree, to increase the use of accompanying instruments.

Recent concerts featured major works, with chamber size orchestras, by Mark Hayes, Dan Forrest, John Rutter, and Rene Clausen, as well as a number of anthems spanning music from Baroque to the present. Singers come from a diverse group of church backgrounds throughout the Twin Cities for 11 rehearsals and 4-5 concerts each Spring and Fall.

Chromatics

People often ask us how the Chromatics got started. It's a complicated story, but here's a brief summary:

Back in 1993, a group called the OK Chorale was formed at NASA'S Goddard Space Flight Center by Anne Raugh and Steve Leete. The OK Chorale was 12 members strong and sang mostly doo-wop tunes, standards, and classics from Sesame Street. None of the current Chromatics were in the group at its inception, but Padi Boyd and Karen Smale joined in 1993, followed by Alan Smale and Deb Nixon in 1994.

After numerous further changes in personnel, including the departure of co-founder Anne Raugh, the group decided to refocus and reinvent itself as The Chromatics. The Chromatics were incorporated in 1995, and have been performing continuously under that name ever since.
