We are not teaching music to children," said Trish Joyce, Founder and Artistic Director. "We teach children through the power of music. We have high musical expectations, and we strive for high standards of musical excellence. We also believe that we should teach the whole person. To quote Helen Kemp - "body, mind, spirit, voice." We believe that through the choral art - through the NJYC choir family - the musical journey is about fellowship, compassion, commitment, taking risks, growing, nurturing, beauty, joy, and passion.
We are here to inspire children to discover, learn and perform beyond their expectations. As Eph Ely wrote, our goal is to "discover the extra in the ordinary."

The idea for a chorus of average people (even for people who think they're not singers) had been shaping in my mind for a long time when the Church of the Holy Apostles invited me to found their community chorus in 1994.
During the 1980's, I did quite a bit of traveling around the United States and Europe facilitating vocal workshops. Many people had enrolled because they said they could not sing, or that they "had no voice." It occurred to me that it must be a twentieth century phenomenon that a person would have the notion that they did not have the ability to sing. Surely a century ago, when families in this country gathered around the parlor piano to sing for an evening's entertainment, no one would have thought they were unworthy to join in. Many of our best folk songs started as work songs - sung together by people at their labor. Can you imagine that someone would have worked quietly on the side while the others sang because they "didn't have a good voice?" For whatever reason - perhaps because the increase in electronic media has made people used to being spectators rather than participants, or perhaps because a simple way of life has been replaced with a complex and anxiety-filled one - people today rarely have the opportunity to sing together.
When the church invited me to begin this work, I knew that its reputation as a leader for social justice in the community would make it a perfect place for this experiment. What we have created here is a place where people can come together to sing without any judgments about their voices. We believe that everyone can sing, and that they ought to have the opportunity to sing. We respect all musical styles, and we try to include as many kinds of music as possible. Singing can be complex, baffling, and difficult at times, but most of all it ought to be enjoyable. We invite everyone who wants to have the thrill of singing to come and join us.

Praised for a "rich, natural sound that's larger and more complex than the sum of its parts," (National Public Radio) New York Polyphony is regarded as one of the finest vocal chamber ensembles in the world. The four men, "singers of superb musicianship and vocal allure," (The New Yorker) apply a modern touch to repertoire that ranges from austere medieval melodies to cutting-edge contemporary compositions. Their dedication to innovative programming, as well as a focus on rare and rediscovered Renaissance and medieval works, has not only earned New York Polyphony critical acclaim, but also helped to move early music into the classical mainstream.
From its early days in 1988, as an offshoot of a chorus-in-residence created expressly for the Brooklyn Philharmonic, until the present day, with self-produced concerts, recordings, residencies, commissioning program and tours, NYVS has carved a unique niche for itself in the musical world. NYVS is a sixteen-member professional choral ensemble (sometimes expanded to 24 or more) dedicated to presenting both seldom-heard works by past and contemporary masters, as well as premieres by today's composers. Harold Rosenbaum has placed a special emphasis on supporting American composers. NYVS has been featured many times on radio and TV. In August 1993, the group appeared as the first-ever guest chorus at Tanglewood Music Center's annual Festival of Contemporary Music (returning in 2003), and in 2010, NYVS made its third appearance at the Juilliard School.
New York Voices is the Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble renowned for their excellence in jazz and the art of group singing. Like the great groups that have come before, such as Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, Singers Unlimited, Manhattan Transfer and Take 6, they have learned from the best and taken the art form to new levels. Their interests are rooted in jazz, but often Brazilian, R & B, classical, and pop influences are included with equal creativity and authenticity. The group was formed in 1987 by Darmon Meader, Peter Eldridge, Kim Nazarian, Caprice Fox and Sara Krieger. By way of explanation, Darmon, Peter, Kim and Caprice attended Ithaca College in NY and were part of an invitational alumni group formed to tour the European Jazz Festivals in the summer of '86. As a result of this exciting experience, the idea of forming a professional group was born.
The Newburyport Choral Society (NCS) is one of the largest community choral societies in New England, and one of the nation's oldest choral groups. Comprised of approximately 125 singers from more than thirty communities in eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, we are a non-auditioned Chorus that range in age from high school students to retirees that hold diverse musical backgrounds.
The only requirements for membership are a love of singing, commitment to learning the music, and a willingness to participate in the life and well-being of the chorus. We sing together, learn together, laugh together, and strive together for excellence in performance.
For the past 85 years, NCS has performed an extensive repertoire of choral music from the Renaissance to the 21st century with professional orchestra and soloists. Known for the exceptional quality of its concerts, NCS has set the standard in the performance of choral/orchestral masterworks on the North Shore. Our singers and audiences experience the great classical works of such composers as Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Verdi, as well as more contemporary composers such as Britten, Durufle and Pinkham.
The quality of NCS concerts springs from a single common bond shared by all of its members - a love of singing and sharing outstanding choral music with community audiences - from the known to the new - from the emotional power of large choral works to the tenderness of smaller a cappella pieces - from dramatic and innovative contemporary works to lighthear
