Our ensemble performs sacred and secular classics by the old masters and contemporary composers. A customary pattern of two or three concert cycles each season with orchestra, organ or piano offers a variety of stylistic works to the public. Founded in 1963, the group is comprised of experienced and dedicated singers from over 20 Hudson Valley communities. Over 60 singing members have a very special experience each week. We call it the Camerata Chorale -- lovers of music who meet every Tuesday evening in Poughkeepsie to sing. Singing brought us together - singing keeps us together.
Camerata d'Amici is a 35-member auditioned choral ensemble, drawn from towns in Fairfield and Westchester counties. It also includes a chamber choir of twelve members. Camerata performs three concerts per season, in December, March, and May, as well as outreach concerts at local retirement communities.
The diversity of our repertoire is one of the things that makes Camerata d'Amici unique. The music we sing is exceptionally broad and varied, representing the voices of different eras, cultures and peoples. We aspire through this repertoire to connect with the hearts of our audience, to channel the art of the composer and poet, to communicate what it means to be human. As Beethoven wrote on the title page of his Missa Solemnis: "From the heart - may it return to the heart."
The Camerata Singers, founded in 1972 by Dr. Allan Birney, has been an integral part of the Lehigh Valley's notable arts community and continues to make a significant contribution to the artistic life of the area by providing several quality programs of classical and contemporary choral music each year. 1992 Bee Chow began a music literacy class of 10-12 children, ages 5-7, inspired by Zoltan Kodaly's philosophy that the singing voice should be every child's first and lifelong musical instrument. The class gradually developed into the Cantabella Children's Chorus with a total membership of about 250 singers. Many members of the chorus are now very accomplished musicians, studying one or even two other musical instruments. Most importantly, they continue to enjoy singing, harmonizing and performing as a choral group. Choral singing has proven to be a great way to touch and be touched by music!
Cantabile is dedicated to bringing high-caliber musical performances to the general public in the New Jersey area. Our mission is to foster and cultivate, in our members and audiences, a love and enjoyment of choral music. The group consists of singers, drawn from local communities, who perform a wide range of choral music with an emphasis on contemporary compositions. We are fortunate to have Ms. Rebecca Scott, a member of The Juilliard School faculty, as our musical director. Ms. Scott provides the professional leadership that has enabled Cantabile to grow into a cohesive, disciplined, and expressive choral ensemble.
Now celebrating 29 years of artistic excellence, Cantabile Chamber Chorale continues to seek opportunities to share the gift and joy of choral music, to lift the human spirit and to show the commonalities of humanity through musical expression.
Cantabile and Director Rebecca Scott have received the ASCAP-Chorus America Award for Adventuresome Programming, which is granted to choruses demonstrating a commitment to performances of choral music written in the last 25 years.
Cantabile has also been honored with the Excellence in Achievement Award from the Middlesex County (NJ) Cultural and Heritage Commission. We've demonstrated that new music and eclectic programming provides opportunities to speak to the diverse communities of Central New Jersey. We do this because it is our mission, and because it is the responsibility of the arts to unite the common thread of humanity that is achievable only through musical expression.
Funding has been made possible in part by the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
We are a warm and open community of 50 voices spanning seven decades in age. We are a Boulder-based auditioned ensemble with a wide range of backgrounds from musical professionals to motivated amateur singers. For us, singing is a way to connect with each other and find rest from our chaotic lives, in an environment where one is accepted and valued. And sharing with others through performance is how we bring the emotion and joy of choral music to the broader community.
Our concert programs are intentionally curated to stimulate reflection and to challenge audiences and singers to think more broadly about how music informs, educates, and betters our world.
With each concert, we ask the question: Why are we making music this time?
Cantabile's history begins at the Mountain View Community School of Music and Art, where there was a program called the Peninsula Children's Chorale. While a part of the Community School, the choir grew, excelled, and participated in a variety of unique performance opportunities. In 1994, founding Artistic Director Signe Boyer left the Community School to create Cantabile Youth Singers; the adult choir, the Baroque Choral Guild, sponsored Cantabile - lending us vital support to get started.
The program began with three levels and 25 students: Preparatory, Intermediate and Concert Choir. These twenty-five singers rehearsed at the same Foothills Congregational Church we rehearse in today. Signe Boyer was the Artistic Director and driving force for Cantabile during our first ten years. She moved Cantabile through many milestones to establish the choir as an important participant and leader in the Bay Area choral music community. Fostering and sharing her lifelong passion for music education for children, she gave the singers and their families the gift of belonging to a choral community and shared that gift with the larger Silicon Valley community.
Many founding families and a very dedicated Board helped move Cantabile toward growth and expanded performance opportunities. Here are some highlights of performances and tours during Signe's Artistic Directorship of Cantabile:

We join together to sing with joy, under the direction of Pollyanna Moody. We love to help participants improve their singing. Before the pandemic, Portland, Oregon-based Cantata Pacifica had 30 singers who rehearsed weekly and performed twice a year in live concerts.
Now we have even more singers, both across the nation and overseas. We rehearse virtually for six weeks and produce a recording which is shared on our youtube channel. Participating in the recording is optional.
Joining Cantata Pacifica gives you an opportunity to sing, learn, and stay in good vocal condition. One day we will again join together, rehearsing and performing face to face. Meanwhile we join together in joyful singing, virtually.
We work hard to enhance our skills while enjoying the process of creating a whole that is more than the sum of its parts. We seek singers who can match pitch, enjoy blending in a group setting, and who are committed to the process of rehearsing and striving for improvement. Please also go to our Facebook Events Page for information about upcoming events.
