Review: The RSCM Guide to Plainchant is a revision of the seminal and best-selling Plainchant for Everyone by Dr. Mary Berry, the leading plainchant expert who died in 2008. This new edition, revised by one of Dr. Berry's pupils, John Rowlands-Pritchard, is reset with an improved and cleaner layout. It also includes a new anthology of plainchant that singers and choir directors will find invaluable. Cantors, in particular, will find 5this book essential reading.See a video introducing this great new chant resource from RSCM.In the video, John explains the origins of plainchant, and how it can be relevant in the twenty-first century. He works with a group of singers from the RSCM to demonstrate how easy it can be to pick up the basic techniques of singing plainchant using the new volume.

Compelling rhythmic variety and a heartwarming text make this short anthem especially useful for small choirs during the Christmas season. An optional C instrument part brings a delicate playfulness to the keyboard accompaniment.More music for small choirs
Composer: John D Becker
The feature of this arrangement for unison voices (children's choir, or small adult ensemble) is contained in the adventurous piano accompaniment. While wonderful on its own, the independent nature of the accompaniment makes the unison voices sound like a whole lot more than what's actually on the page. The assembly can easily join in the familiar refrain.
Arranger: Peter Niedmann
This gorgeous arrangement and translation of the ancient Latin hymn will be a favorite of your choir and congregation. Pitch is maintained throughout by clusters of handbells. If you have the right space for it, try having the sopranos and altos sing from the side opposite the tenors and basses; the inherent antiphonal quality of the setting will be more apparent to the listeners.10 Handbells.

This piece celebrates the Christmas carol, used through the centuries to announce and celebrate the birth of Christ. The text, by Timothy Dudley-Smith, is set to original music, while the instrumental introduction and interludes quote various familiar carols in the style of this piece.Assembly, piano, guitar and instrument parts are optional.
Composer: Jeffrey Honore
Though Joseph is described but not quoted in the Scriptures, this text is in the voice of Joseph reflecting on Mary his wife and his infant son. The accompaniment for this mostly unison carol moves in a gentle, though somewhat lilting, 3/4, making it ideal for children's choirs. Handbells and a flute nicely enhance this setting.Unison, optional solo, flute and cello. 15 Handbells.Ê

A unison carol in German and English scored for unison choir, two violins, and a viola. The strings provide a lot of movement. Very festive."The instrumental parts, which add a festive character to the piece, are flexible: three violins; flute and two violins; flute or violin, violin and viola. It is possible to play the three instrumental parts on the organ; soft flute 8' and 4' are suggested." -William Tortolano

Italian-born organist, Pietro Yon, came to the USA in 1907 where he was organist at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York for nearly 20 years. As a composer, he is probably best remembered for this piece, a 20th century pastorale Gesu Bambino. This is a new, simple edition for unison singing with keyboard.
