A substantial unaccompanied choral piece whose frequent meter changes result in a free rhythm of mixed long and short notes well suited to carrying this classic 17th-century text. Minimal divisi required. Enough of the musical material repeats (often in different vocal configurations) to make learning this piece go rather quickly. One of three pieces in a set (see also "By-by Lullay," G-6996, and "Christmas Bells," G-6997)
Composer: Jason Thoms
Set in free meter, this early seventeenth-century English carol has a regal sound that builds to a triumphant end. For SATB voices and optional timbrel, this piece develops in intensity throughout using a variety of harmonic textures that add interest and a distinctive quality. The memorable refrain heralds the wondrous announcement of Christ's birth. This work can be used throughout Christmastide. The ad lib Timbrel part is optional.
Composer: Thomas Keesecker
