Along the way Pip meets characters like the Doc Rock Peacocks, who promise to transform the sparrow into a star, and the troubled residents of The Bewilderness. With the help of two friendly owls, Pip meets singing sensation Shamira the Golden Nightingale and discovers a great secret, causing the sparrow to at last understand the power of having a song that is completely their own. As well as the rich variety of solo roles, which feature spoken narration, the work provides great dramatic potential for the unison and mixed choruses, who play an integral role in the storytelling. The memorable, eminently singable melodies are complimented by a characterful orchestration, for 10-part instrumental ensemble, with Chilcott drawing on a broad range of musical styles. Exploring themes of identity, inclusivity, and self-belief, this heart-warming work is a testament to the unifying, healing power of music. Songlist: Gone, Gone, Gone, Heartbreaker, Royals, Thinking Out Loud, Don't Start Now Marques L. A. Garrett : Choral Music by Black ComposersReview: The Oxford Book of Choral Music by Black Composers is a landmark collection of non-idiomatic compositions from the sixteenth century to the present day, providing a comprehensive introduction to an area of choral music that has been historically under-represented. This unique anthology seeks both to improve representation in the historical canon and to showcase the music of some of the best names in choral music today. 35 pieces for SATB choir, unaccompanied or with piano or organ. Mixture of sacred and secular works, including anthems, choral art songs, madrigals, motets, and part-songs. Michael Maybrick : The Holy CityReview: Offered for SATB divisi choir and piano with optional chamber orchestra and organ accompaniment, this powerful and majestic hymn arrangement by John Stoddard is brought to you as part of the Jason Max Ferdinand Choral Series. Notably performed by the Jason Max Ferdinand Singers, this fierce arrangement was masterfully designed to have a powerful effect on singer and listener alike. Rollo Dilworth : Weather: Stand the StormReview: Historically, the arts have always fulfilled the dual roles of responding to change while at the same time creating change. Weather is a poem that gives voice to the voiceless, especially those who have been and continue to be marginalized because of difference. It responds to and reflects realities that are both culturally specific and humanly universal. Professor Claudia Rankine challenges all of us (no matter your background or lived experience) to know better, to do better, to take action, and to become agents of social justice and social change. This work for choir, narrator, piano with optional Wind Symphony or Chamber ensemble, is to be a learning and growing experience for the singers, the audience, and the conductor teacher in all ways emotional and intellectual . There is a companion resource for Weather that is intended for students, educators, conductors, and audiences to learn more about the social, political, and historical context of this work. This guide offers an opportunity for everyone to deply engage with Weather and understand its critically important social and historical context. The guide, created by Dr. Colleen Sears, Professor of Music at The College of New Jersey, encourages us to honor the intent of Claudia Rankine's poetry and Rollo Dilworth's music; to become better citizens in our communities and to bridge divides through our shared humanity. Various Arrangers : Singing About Singing in the ChoirReview: Lighthearted, humorous songs about singing in the choir. "We Can Sing That!" - With a text by the composer, this is a delightful kaleidoscope of musical snippets that highlight the joys of choral singing! "A Place in the Choir" - Here is a perfect lighter selection or encore for adult or community choir! Bottom, middle and top, every part gets to shine as all your singers take their places in the choir. What fun! "I Just Want to Sing in a Choir" - May I please sing with the choir? This novelty number answers that question with humorous lyrics and clever solo lines. Add some staging for a sure audience pleaser. "We're the Choir!" - Kirby has designed this piece so that the distinctive melodies which showcase each section at the beginning are combined for a glorious finale! A brilliant recruiting device with a lot of quasi-operatic tongue-in-cheek humor! "The Do's and Don'ts of the Audience" - After hours and hours of rehearsal, your choir is ready to perform, but is your audience ready to listen? Here is your chance to teach the audience how to perform their part of the concert! Sneezing, coughing, cell phones, when to clap - it's all here in a clever novelty madrigal style that will be just as much fun to perform as it is instructive! Songlist: The Do's and Don'ts of the Audience, We're the Choir!, I Just Want to Sing in a Choir, A Place in the Choir, We Can Sing That! A.R. Rahman : Barso ReReview: Barso Re, written by A. R. Rahman and arranged for choir by Ethan Sperry, appeared in the soundtrack of the 2007 film Guru. It is an Indian take on how beautiful it can be to sing in the rain. For percussion, use a beaded gourd shaker, rasp, or tambourine for the upper line and one or more djembes or floor toms for the lower line. Songlist: Barso Re A.R. Rahman : Music From the Indian CinemaReview: Jai Ho was written for the 2008 Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire. While this is a British movie, director Tony Boyle wanted to acknowledge Indian tradition. He asked A.R. Rahman to write a song in the style of his music for the Indian cinema to be choreographed and performed during the ending credits. The resulting piece is a victory dance capturing the essence of the movie's story. Balleilakka is a song from the Tamil film Sivaji, which means "The Boss." The text of this piece is a tongue-twister lamenting how traditional Indian culture is being subsumed and listing the speaker's memories of his homeland in increasingly faster syllabic patterns. O Saya was written for the Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire. The song appears at the beginning as we are introduced to just how horrible living conditions are int he slums of India. The lyrics have no meaning, nor does the title. They are just nonsense syllables that form a wail. The melodic patterns are based loosely on the patterns one might hear in the slums as the Muslim call to worship blasts from the minarets, but they are more a call to action than a call to prayer. When people sing this piece, hopefully they will consider taking some action against poverty themselves. Barso Re, written by A. Songlist: Jai Ho!, Balleilakka, O Saya, Zikr, Barso Re Aaron Copland : Four Motets for Mixed VoicesReview: These four motets were composed in the fall of 1921 while Copland was studying with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. The four motets have remained unpublished until now. Writing to Copland about them in 1924, Boulanger tells the composer that "those motets sound in the voices in a stunning manner." Songlist: Help Us, O Lord, Sing Ye Praises To Our King, Have Mercy On us, O My Lord, Though, O Jehovah, Abideth Forever Aaron Copland : In The BeginningReview: With text from Genesis this is a very interesting and rewarding extended work for mixed chorus a cappella and features a solo for Mezzo-Soprano. Songlist: In The Beginning Aaron Copland : Las Agachadas - The Shake-down SongReview: Based on melody No. 202 in Kurt Schindler's collection: "Folk Music and Poetry of Spain and Portugal." The chorus is to be divided into two groups: The main choral body, and a conrasting smaller "Solo group" of approximately 3 or 4 voices to a part. Songlist: The Shake-down Song Aaron Copland : Old American Songs CompleteReview: Mixed voice arrangements by David Brunner, Irving Fine, Glenn Koponen, Gregory Rose, and R. Wilding-White collected for the first time in a complete edition. Includes the original notes on the songs. Songlist: The Boatmen's Dance, The Dodger, Long Time Ago, Simple Gifts, I Bought Me a Cat, The Little Horses, Zion's Walls, The Golden Willow Tree, At the River, Ching-a-ring Chaw Adolphus Hailstork : Four SpiritualsReview: Conceived a a set there is also a short prelude. Songlist: Great Day!, In Dat Great Gettin' Up Mornin', Cert'ny Lord, He's Got the Whole World In His Hand Adolphus Hailstork : Three Dunbar HymnsReview: Paul Laurence Dunbar was born June 27, 1872 in Dayton, Ohio. He died there on February 9, 1906. Dunbar was the first African-American poet to garner national critical acclaim. He penned a large body of dialect poems, standard English poems, essays, novels, and short stories, before he died at age 33. His work often addressed the difficulties encountered by members of his race and the efforts of African-Americans to achieve equality in America. He was praised both by the prominent literary critics of his time and by his literary contemporaries. Songlist: When Storms Arise, Lead Gently, Lord, Little Lamb Alan Billingsley : O Little Christmas TownReview: What a delightful children's musical for the Christmas season! O Little Christmas Town centers on God's ultimate plan for the town of Bethlehem. Dialogue is at times lighthearted, and at others, incredibly profound as the citizens of Bethlehem share the news of the Messiah's birth. The work is about 20 minutes in length, with an overture and five pieces that contain new melodies as well as familiar carols. It may be accompanied by piano, or by using the accompaniment CD. Production of this musical is extremely accessible with simple, yet effective suggestions for sets, props, and parts that may be performed by girls or boys. Voicing: Children Alan Bullard : AnthemsReview: This anthology of ten mixed-voice anthems by Alan Bullard combines new material written specially for the collection with established favourites from the Oxford catalogue, some of which appear here for the first time with SATB scoring. Including the joyful 'Cantate Gloria' and the beautiful 'From the break of the day', Alan Bullard Anthems contains an attractive selection of works suitable for a variety of liturgical seasons and will appeal to all mixed-voice choirs. Songlist: From the break of the day, Sursum corda (Lift up your hearts), Jesus Christ, we bow before thee, Let the people praise thee, O God, Hail the day that sees him rise, O Saviour of the world, Cantate Gloria, Prayer for Peace, God in Mine Eternity, We thank you, Lord Alan Bullard : O Come, EmmanuelReview: O Come, Emmanuel is an Advent Celebration, suitable for both church and concert choirs. It is based on the 7 Great 'O' Antiphons, and fragments of the well-known plainsong hymn permeate the work. To these, Bullard has added settings of a number of other Advent texts and hymns, including the beautiful 'There is a rose-tree', a rousing setting of 'Chanticleer Carol', and new arrangements of 'Gabriel's Message' and 'Joy to the world!'. The work may be sung throughout by SATB choir, or a range of soloists may take some of the lines. The accompaniment - for organ or piano, or with small orchestra or chamber group - is equally flexible. A number of the movements make highly effective separate pieces and anthems. Written with the composer's long and practical experience, O Come, Emmanuel is a strikingly original work for Advent and Christmas that will enhance both liturgical celebrations and concert programmes at this time. Songlist: The advent of our God, O Wisdom, Where shall Wisdom be found?, O Lord of Lord, Come, thou long-expected Jesus, O Root of Jesse, There is a rose-tree, O Key of David, Earth grown old, Thy kingdom come! on bended knee, O Morning Star, Chanticleer, O King of the Nations, Joy to the world!, And they shall call his name Emmanuel, O Emmanuel, Gabriel's Message, Lo! he comes with clouds descending Alan Bullard : Oxford Book of Flexible Choral SongsReview: 'The Oxford Book of Flexible . . .' anthologies are the perfect resource for choirs of all types and sizes. Each piece is presented with flexible scoring options, clearly explained throughout, enabling perfomance by various combinations of singers - mixed choirs, upper-voice choirs, choirs with few men, unison choirs, small choirs. Flexible voices and piano, with options for unison and two-part singing (mixed or upper/lower) Alan Bullard : Psalmi PenitentialesReview: Psalmi Penitentiales comprises three settings of sections from the Penitential Psalms, interspersed with four arrangements of the well-known Ubi caritas plainchant. Often recited during Lent, the three psalms that Bullard has chosen give expression to feelings of penitence and remorse. The setting, for mixed four-part choir with organ or piano accompaniment, responds to the drama and changes of mood within the Latin text with expressive melodic lines and richly varied harmonies. The psalms may also be performed separately, giving the work added flexibility in performance. Psalmi Penitentiales is an excellent companion to Bullard's Wondrous Cross, ideal for choirs seeking a substantial choral work for Lent and Passiontide. Songlist: Antiphon: Ubi Caritas, Domine, ne in furore tuo arguas me, Antiphon: Ubi Caritas, De profundis, Domine, exaudi orationem meam Alan Bullard : Wondrous CrossReview: Wondrous Cross is a reflective work suitable for church or concert choirs at Passiontide. Bullard skilfully weaves the traditional Seven Last Words of Christ with linking biblical passages, 3 well-known hymns, and settings of 4 well-known sacred texts, including 'Drop, drop, slow tears' and 'Ave verum corpus' (both of which may be sung as independent motets) to create a moving and at times dramatic work. The short solos are perfectly suited to members of the choir, and strings (quartet, quintet, or ensemble) may optionally join the organ or piano in the accompaniment. If performed liturgically, the work may be interspersed with prayers and readings. The result is a flexible and striking work that re-presents this timeless story for a modern audience. String parts and full scores are available to hire from the Music Hire Library. Songlist: Prelude, The First Words, There is a green hill far away, The Second Words, The Third Words, When my love to God grows weak, The Fourth Words, Drop, drop, slow tears, Were You There?, The Fifth Words, Ave verum corpus, The Sixth Words, God so loved the world, The Seventh Words, In the departure of the Lord, When I survey the Wondrous Cross Alan Wilson : Carols Old and New - EasterReview: Volume IV of Seasonal Carols Old & New is an exciting new venture into previously unexplored territory. Apart from a small number of Easter carols, there has been little music available for festivals other than Christmas. In Seasonal Carols Volume IV all the main seasons are represented, and in addition festivals such as Corpus Christi, Candlemas, The Transfiguration of Saints' Days receive timely attention. As a complete contrast and in a secular vein, a new rustic mixedvoice arrangement of King Henry VIII's "Pastime With Good Company" has been added. This volume is intended to give churches, schools and colleges a wide selection of material that will help to add a richer feeling to a liturgically - based Christian year. Songlist: A Lenten Prayer, A Carol for Lent, A Song for Holy Week, Christ the Lord is Risen, Easter Day, Christ ist erstanden, Water from the Wells of Salvation, In this sign conquer, I am with you - Yes to the end of time, Spirit of God, A Whitsun Hymn, Be present, Holy Trinity, By day and night they sing, Taste and See, Alleluia, Sing to Jesus, The Old Man's King, O Lord of Hosts, All Heaven Possessing, Saints Alive, A Carol to Mary, Carol for Peace (Kum ba Yah), A Carol for Unity (Peace Depends on Unity), Pastime With Good Company Albert McNeil : Al McNeil SpiritualsReview: Treat yourself to seven, rousing spirituals by Albert McNeil, who is well-known to the national choral community, having been honored on four occasions with "Command Performances" before the prestigious American Choral Directors Association in 1981 in New Orleans, in 1985 at their Salt Lake City Convention, at their 1997 convention in San Diego, California, and most recently in February, 2000, at Los Angeles during the ACDA Western Division Convention held on the campus of Loyola-Marymount University. Songlist: Hold Out Your Light, He's Got the Whole World, Open the Window, Noah, John, The Revelator, My Long White Robe, All My Trials Alexander L'Estrange : Zimbe!Review: Zimbe! is a 40-minute work for SATB chorus, children's choir and jazz quintet with percussion, by the UK composer Alexander L'Estrange. It is a vibrant sequence of twelve African and gospel songs, charting a day in the life of an African village. There are simple children's playground songs from Ghana and Zimbabwe, a Xhosa lullaby for mothers of the victims of Apartheid, a rousing drinking song, and music used on religious occasions. Zimbe! will also provide an exciting new repertory piece for choral societies who may be looking for a follow-up to the world-influenced works of David Fanshawe and Karl Jenkins. The addition of the children's choir enables choirs to forge, or renew, relationships with local school or community choirs. Alfred Einstein (Edited by) : The Golden Age of MadrigalsReview: A selection of classic Italian madrigals, mostly a cappella and all with English lyrics. Songlist: I'm Goin' to Sing, Steal Away, I Got Shoes, Deep River, John Saw duh Numbuh Allan Robert Petker : A Festival GloriaReview: This 8-minute work has three distinct sections that flow together without stopping. The Gloria section that opens the work is exuberant and rhythmic. The miserere middle section is poignant and stirring. The et in terra pax section is assuring and comforting. Other accompaniments are available by rental: Brass Quintet and Percussion, Chamber Orchestra and Full Orchestra. Allan Robert Petker : Te Deum - Laudamus Propter MusicamReview: The traditional Te Deum takes on a fresh perspective with this three-movement work. The entire title really means praise to God for music, and the first movement pays homage to our Baroque ancestry in it Handelian treatment, but in modern day tonalities. The second is lush and tender, while the third blends the traditional Latin text with the beautiful poetry of Fred Pratt Green, When in our Music God is Glorified. Composed for choir and orchestra, it is performable with just piano and in several different orchestral options. It is already been performed in numerous U.S. halls, including Carnegie Hall, and in Europe. It is medium to difficult.
