Review: Hymnus Paradisi is composed for SATB chorus and orchestra with soprano and tenor soloists, and is characterised by an extraordinary depth and power. The text includes lines from the traditional Latin Requiem along with lines from the Anglican burial service, as well as the texts of Psalm 23 and Psalm 121. Because of the personal nature of the composition, Hymnus Paradisi remained unperformed until 1950. This vocal score includes a piano reduction of the orchestral score.
Herbert Howells : Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis 'Worcester'Review: Herbert Howells' Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis written for the choir of Worcester Cathedral in August 1951. Scored for SATB Choir and Organ Accompaniment.
Review: Herbert Howell's Requiem written for unaccompanied SATB chorus and soli. Although written in 1936, Requiem was not released for performance until 1980, held back by Howells following the death of his son in 1935. It is a harmonious and deeply Romantic composition, but restrained and it is at these moments we realise how affected he was by his loss. It was the composer's intention that Requiem should be performed a cappella, however he provided a limited organ part, for rehearsal purposes only, which is included here. Songlist: Psalm 23, Salvator Mundi, Requiem Aeternam 1, Requiem Aeternam 2, I Heard a Voice From Heavan, Psalm 121
Review: Three of the finest of all settings of the English language canticles. Over the past quarter of a century, Howells has emerged as among the greatest and certainly most widely performed composers of choral liturgical works of the last hundred years. At last, his most important services appear in a series of four handsome collections that link geographically the cathedral choirs for which they were written, newly edited with interpretative notes by David Hill.

Hilary Tann : Wales, Our Land (Cymru, ein gwlad)Review: Wales, Our Land was composed during late summer 2002 in response to a commission from the Welsh Heritage Program at Green Mountain College, Vermont. This lilting, beautiful choral work sets text by an unknown Welsh-American slate quarryman which speaks of the poet's love of his country of origin, perhaps, even, his longing to return. It is this sense of longing for the homeland (in Welsh, hiraeth) which infuses the composition. The work is sung in English but the words "Wales, our land," may be substituted for the three recurring Welsh words, "Cymru, ein gwlad."
Review: Eternal Light: A Requiem is arranged for an accompanied mixed voices choir with soprano, tenor and baritone solo options. It is by the award-winning British composer and internationally acclaimed broadcaster, Howard Goodall, and is a stunning new Requiem for the modern day. It is intended to provide solace to the grieving, reflecting on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposinjg them with poems in English. Speaking about the work, Howard Goodall said, "For me, a modern Requiem is one that acknowledges the unbearable loss and emptiness that accompanies the death of loved ones, a loss that is not easily ameliorated with platitudes about the joy awaiting us in the afterlife. This, like Brahms', is a Requiem for the living, addressing their suffering and endurance, a Requiem focusing on the consequences of interrupted lives."
Goodall's fresh and unorthodox interpretation of the Requiem Mass was released on EMI Classics, performed by Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford and London Musici conducted by Stephen Darlington with soloists Natasha Marsh, Alfie Boe and Christopher Maltman. Duration: 40:00 Songlist: Requiem: Kyrie: Close now thine eyes, Revelation: Factum est silentium, Litany: Belief, Hymn: Lead, kindly light, Lacrymosa: Do not stand at my grave and weep, Dies Irae: In Flanders field, Recordare: Drop, drop slow tears, Revelation: Tum angelus tertius clanxit, Agnus Dei, In Paradisum: Lux aeterna
Howard Goodall : Every purpose under the heaven: The King James Bible OratorioReview: Every purpose under the heaven,Êarranged for an accompanied mixed voices choir with soprano and tenor solos, is a musical tribute to one of the most important cultural landmarks of ÊWestern civilization - the 1611 King James Bible. Written in celebration of the Bible's 400-year anniversary, Goodall has brought together ten of the most expressive passages, from Genesis to Revelation, to create an oratorio that is at once steeped in historic grandeur and utterly relevant in today's society. Musically, it displays all the hallmarks of Goodall's well-loved style - soaring melodies, rhythmic vitality and perfectly crafted lines. However, this work offers singers and audiences something more: an opportunity to introduce new generations to the expressive power and ancient truths of this historic text. Songlist: In the beginning, There is a season, I will lift up mine eyes, Thee and me, Fulfilled in one word, I was a stranger, Blessed, Nover faileth, The light of the world, A new heaven, a new earth
Review: Invictus: A Passion seeks to address one of the most powerful and dramatic of the world's traditional religious stories through the lens of a diverse, modern world. A variety of texts written or inspired by women form a narrative that describes human suffering and persecution, but also emphasizes the human capacity for love and humility in the face of tyranny. These universal messages are brought to life with the emotional clarity and sweeping force of any Howard Goodall score. Songlist: Gethsemane, Lamentation, Chorale: His Paths are Peace, Compassion, Invictus, Golgotha, Easter Hymn, Now we are they who sleep, I will arise
Howard Goodall : The Lord is my Shepherd (Psalm 23) Theme from The Vicar of DibleyReview: The Lord Is My Shepherd is best known as the theme tune to the award-winning BBC TV series The Vicar of Dibley. Warm and melodious, Goodall's setting of Psalm 23 is deservedly well loved by choirs and congregations everywhere. This arrangement for unaccompanied mixed voices was first performed in March 2014 in the State Apartments of St James's Palace in the presence of HRH the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.

Iain Grandage : Three Australian Bush SongsReview: These songs use a musical language which is contemporary yet easily approachable by mixed voices choirs including those at the high school level. Its central "birdsong chorus" includes mixed meters, onomatopoeia, and improvised bird calls. The two outer movements surround this energetic paen with slow evocative harmonies describing respectively sunrise and sunset. The three titles are Dawn, Birds and Sunset. The parts sometimes divide. The musical language is "easy modern" and when sung together these form an effective set. Presented in workshop by Andre Thomas at the Sixth World Symposium on Choral Music in Minneapolis. Songlist: Dawn, Birds, Sunset
Ian Venables : O Sing Aloud to GodReview: First performed in 1994 by Cirencester Parish Church and published here for the first time, this is a setting of text taken from thePsalms, scored for mixed voices with organ accompaniment
Review: Winners of the Harmony Sweepstakes National Finals the Australian quartet The Idea of North is one of the most highly regarded vocal jazz groups performing today. "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" is an old gospel song arranged in a swing, trad jazz style and features each performer with solo sections. It has quasi instrumental parts to sing including trumpet, trombone and even banjos! Originally inspired from the movie sound track, "White Men Can't Jump" this fun arrangement is sure to leave your audience wanting more. "Amazing Grace" and "Sweet Sweet Spirit" retain their gospel meaning and flavor while given the wonderful vocal jazz treatment from the talented arranger Andrew Piper. These arrangements are all highly recommended! Songlist: Amazing Grace, Sweet Sweet Spirit, Just A Closer Walk With Thee
Imant Raminsh : Earth Chants - Native American SongsReview: This set of seven movements uses a broad palette of choral orchestration. The first piece, "The Lands Around My Dwelling" (Inuit), features free and changing meters and frequent divisi. Movement two, "As My Eyes Search" (Chippewa), is energized by close canonic entries. Movement three "War Song" (Sioux), is a vigorous piece with canonic imitation and some tone clustering, starting with a single voice parts and expanding to full SSAATTBB texture. Movement four, "Love Song" (Nahuatl), in alternating 8/8 and 9/8 is a lyrical, rhapsodic setting of a ravishing text. Movement five, "Pleasant It Looked" (Winnebago), features a soprano soloist (imitating a boy soprano) and is a quiet meditation. Movement six, "Upward Going" (Tewa), is again move vigorous, and Movement seven "Two Dream Songs" (Wintu), concludes the work in a quiet benediction. Songlist: War Song, Upward Going, Two Dream Songs, Pleasant It Looked, Love Song, The Lands Around My Dwelling, As My Eyes Search

Review: Born in Latvia, Imant Raminsh came to Canada in 1948 and has become one of Canada's most highly regarded choral composer and arrangers. "Northwest Trilogy" is a wonderful set of songs from British Columbia. "Nootka Paddle Song" is a native welcoming song that features free incantation along with evocative choral writing. The piece contains some modern effects such as whispering and tone clusters, and is characterized by a feeling of building excitement and jubilation. "Bye, Bye Baby" - Based on a traditional Russian lullaby and would have been sung by members of the Doukhobar communities. A gentle, tonal work with rich harmonic background with varied textures and voicings bring this song of warmth and simplicity to life. "Sunset" - Folksy, poignant, and slighty tongue-in-cheek, this lament portrays the thoughts of a dying British Columbian cowboy. Replete with imitations of wailing coyotes, muffled death march drums, and other instances of word painting, this is a fun piece to perform. Songlist: Bye, Bye Baby, Sunset, Nootka Paddle Song
Review: The pieces of the first set are arrangements of folk-songs from the Russian and Doukhobor traditions and were prepared for the Vancouver Chamber Choir's 1989 tour of the former Soviet Union. Of the three, "All Throughout the Great Wide World" and "Along the Peterskaya" are well-known Russian tunes, highly rhythmic and vigorous; and employ quasi-instrumental accompaniment effects, whistling, and optional sleigh-bells and slap-stick (whip). The second (The Black Raven) comes from the Doukhobor community of British Columbia, Canada, and is a poignant lament of great lyricism and power. It uses a contralto soloist to introduce and carry melody through a piece. Songlist: Of Home and the Great Wide World, Two Slavic Folk Songs, In a Pine Forest, The Black Raven, Along the Peterskaya, America's Like a Sister, Canada's Like a Mother

Review: Scottish composer James MacMillan (b. 1959) composed this liturgical setting in 1977, published here for the first time. Latin text: Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei. An accessible addition to the repertoire for intermediate standard choirs, but one which professional groups will also find rewarding. Songlist: Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, At the conclusion
Review: Vocal score.
Review: Sun-dogs is a setting of a poem by Michael Symmons Roberts. The text is richly allegorical, iconographic with a deep well of symbolism. The metaphors are complex, evoking a range of emotions and images, dark and terrifying one minute, radiant and ecstatic the next. The composer has divided the poem into five movements for large unaccompanied choir.
Review: A collection of sacred motets, many of them for use at Communion, designed for a good, amateur church or secular choir. 35 minutes.
