Review: Georgia has one of the world's most ancient polyphonic singing traditions. Polyphony refers to music where each vocal line is equally important, sharing the melody among them; (as opposed to homophony, in which melodic interest is concentrated in a single line). The singing tradition in the Caucasus is unique in its harmonic and -- especially in western Georgia -- its extreme polyphonic approach. Many songs have distinct archaic traits dating from pre-Christian times, and in most traditional music the intervals are flexible and do not coincide with tempered scale intervals (with the exception of the fifth). Jeremy Landig's arrangement of 'Pure Imagination' is five parts and is inspired by the sound of the Real Group. "Crunch" chords and interesting turns of harmony abound, making this a real showoff piece. Set mostly in a rubato ballad style, it shifts dramatically and unexpectedly between keys in the first section. Review: "Casita de Campo" is one of the most popular love songs from the Dominican Republic. It describes a modest, and yet beautiful, little rural house in the Cibao region where the composer evokes the consummation of a passionate and virginal love. It is a "cancion-bolero," a typical Caribbean romantic song form in quadruple meter, slow-paced, which is also a centerpiece of serenades. "Chanflin" is a typical Dominican merengue in its melody and form. Chanflin is a young woman, very good looking. The merengue section refers to a "neighborhood gossip." The jaleo section refers to Chanflin dressing in a finicky manner. "La Lluvia" is a folk melody from Ecuador traditionally played on the siku - the double row of panpipes that have been used in the high Andes for over a thousand years. With percussion. Review: The exuberant arrangement of an Eastern Inner Mongolian folk song "Dorven Dalai' exhorts everyone from the Four Seas (the "four corners of the earth" or all nations) to fill their wine bowls with the best of wine, to rejoice and sing and enjoy this moment of happiness together. "Naiman Sharag" - Mongolian songs often praise horses, real and legendary, reflecting the close relationship between horses and humans. A 13th century chronicle refers to the eight chestnut horses of Chinggis Khan, and they have thus become a symbol of national identity which embodies the Mongol's love for their native language and culture. Indigenous Mongolian musical rhythms are often patterned after the rhythm of a running horse. Such rhythms represent one of the major ethnic features of Mongolian music, and can be found throughout this piece. Review: "Come on the Trail of Song" - Memley celebrates the Native American culture with an exquisite triptych of poems and song called Three Native American Settings. The original music is consumed with the sounds of the Native American spirit in all three selections. Although they can be performed separately, the set provides a reverent tribute to a beautiful culture. "Shoshone Love Song" - This tender setting of a Native American poem features extended legato phrasing and delicate musicality. The simple piano accompaniment supports the expressive vocal textures. Ideal for concert or festival programming! "Onokenoga" (or Lake of the Gods to the Mohawk First Nation people) depicts an ancient Mohawk legend of tragic romance. So deep was the connection between these two young lovers, legend has it that the spirit of the young girl wanders the shores to this day searching for her lost mate. "Waniska" - The Cree Indians from the North American continent have a delightful morning song that has been artfully arranged by Brian Tate. Beginning with bird sounds the melody line is first presented by the sopranos. A pedal point is set by the tenors and basses as the altos take their turn with the tune. As with so many Tate arrangements, staging is easily a part of the presentation, as the simple lines cross and lift one another. Some suggestions are provided but each group will find their own path. "Spirit of the Winding Water (A Navajo Prayer)" Native American wisdom and philosophy provide rich awareness of finding the sacred in all things. For this new work, musical phrases and rhythms are assembled from Native American chants and mixed with new music filled with this awareness. Native American instruments are suggested with more traditional instruments offered when these are not available.

Review: Edwin Fissinger's music has a distinctly American sound, and his choral set "Dakota Prairies" uses poems that describe some of our north central states' most beautiful scenery. "The Wild Prairie Rose" uses a poem by Alice Sinclair Page. The madrigal-style writing is excellent for choirs of all sizes, from festival to chamber groups. "The Wind in the Wheat" is based on a poem by Jessamine Slaughter Burgum. One can almost smell the air of the northern plains through the poetry and music of this classic Fissinger selection, published here for the first time. "The Prairie" captures the essence of America's great open spaces in a text by Anne Murry Marius. "Night on the Prairies", a Walt Whitman setting, returns us to our American heritage roots and the thoughts and feelings the prairie invites. "Sing As The Prairie" was written by John Neihardt, who was revered by Nebraskans as their poet laureate. Because his love of nature is evident in each phrase, the music incorporates the enchanting sounds of nature and the prairie. Arrangement by Mary Goetz.

Review: And now for something completely different for Advent! So much of our traditional music for the season of waiting is slow and in a minor key. The emphasis is on longing and despair. John Parker and David Lantz break the mold with 'Great Day A-Comin,' an exuberant neo-spiritual, Great Day A-Comin'. Focusing on the joy to come, this exciting a cappella number simply bubbles over with good cheer. A spirited change for the later weeks of Advent. Donald Moore's 4 part arrangement of 'Beautiful Savior' is a beautiful take on the Silesian melody, a great worship piece! 'Wonderful Savior' is a simple, yet expressive arrangement of the familiar hymn tune, BENTON HARBOR. Careful stepwise voice leading aids in learning and creates a seamless harmonic effect. The distinctive second verse set in minor is quite effective. For Lent, Holy Week, or as preparation for a time of prayer, this beloved hymn anthem is very moving. Spirited and sparkling, Jay Althouse's 'Alleluia' is the perfect all-occasion octavo. Available in women's or SATB voicings, this cheerful a cappella anthem is appropriate for church or school use, in concert, contest, festival, or worship settings. 'Nearer, My God, to Thee' is lovely and very moving. Pure, pristine harmonies reflect the simple desires of this prayer. Yet as the yearnings intensify with each verse, so do the textures and tone colors of this wonderful a cappella arrangement. The third verse, in particular, has some fabulous dissonances and rhythmic effects.

Review: 'Wait on the Lord' is based on the text in Psalm 27:14 and Isaiah 40:31, put together by Rosephanye Powell. This beautifully harmonized piece starts out with the basses, then builds, adding each voice one at a time until measure 13 when all voices are singing together. 'The Word Was God' is another text by Rospehanye Powell, based on John 1:1-3. In this piece, both the male voices and the female voices get their opportunities to shine. Each part is divisi at one point or another. Robert H. Young's 'Show Us Your Mercy, O Lord,' is based on the text in Psalm 85:7-11,13. In this piece, the women split up into gorgeous four-part harmony, the men's voices create a great vocal accompanyment throughout. Robert h. Young's other gem, 'The Christ-Child' is an excellently composed choral with a few divisi parts to sweeten-up the lush chords throughout. His 'Treasures in Heaven' is another piece not to be missed with ample amounts of soli men and women sections throughout. Review: Add a breath of salty sea air to your repertoire with one of these traditional sea chanties. Lots of fun to sing and with performance notes. Originally from England, where "All for Me Grog" was heard in music halls as well as on ships, the shanty was sung while working the capstan and the halyard. Swedish composer and conductor, Robert Sund wrote this playful arrangement of "What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor?" leaving ample room for both women and men to excel in this well-known sea chantey. Review: 'O Jesus, Grant Me Hope and Comfort' is a 17th Century composition by Johann Wolfgang Franck, whose compositions have enjoyed great popularity due to their pure melodies and the warm faith expressed in their text. A Choral Motet by Hugo Distler, 'Praise to the Lord' is based on the melody by Stralsund Gesangbuch, from Distler's Opus 6, No. 2. The beautiful melodies in each of the 4 parts create a beautiful dissonance that is magical to the ears. David A. Carolina Sandell Berg's Swedish folk tune , 'Children of the Heavenly Father,' is beautifully arranged for 4-part mixed voices by Paul Christiansen.
