Ave Maria, one of Lauridsen's growing series of a cappella motets on well-known Latin texts, received its world premiere performance by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, conducted by Paul Salamunovich. The composer wrote, “This serene setting was specially composed as a 70th birthday gift to Maestro Salamunovich, who continues to enrich us all through his magnificent and enduring contributions to the art of choral music.” The changing moods of the text's two verses are reflected in a pair of strong and evocative themes, and in polyphonic textures enriched with divisis to eight or more parts, and peppered with the composer's trademark “gentle” dissonances.
Men's choirs will appreciate the opportunity to perform this motet of Tom·s Luis de Victoria, one of the most important composers of the Italian Renaissance. A superb choice for contest and honor choir!

The text of the 'Magnificat' depicts the scene when the Angel Gabriel came to Mary to tell her of the good news that she has been chosen to bear the son of God. This touching moment is captured in the opening plainchant and polyphony, Mary's joy is unveiled in the ensuing dance-like figuration which follows. Another gem by Joan Symko, Hodie, opens with the soprano section, adding the rest of the choir at measure 12. This vigorous take on the Vespers Aniphon is a great addition to your womens choir's holiday concert. David V. Montoya's 'Ave Maria' is written for 4 part women's voices and it is not to be missed. A contemporary version in english, this arrangement's soprano line could easily lend itself well to either a soloist or a group of sopranos. J. Edmund Hughes' arrangement of 'Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming' is quite different than most arrangements of this tune out there. It incorporates a nice solo in the alto line to be sung inbetween the typical verses. The 'background vocals' singing the typical harmonies start out with 3 parts, then grow to 6 parts by the end. This is an exquisite arrangement! Songlist: Ave Maria, Magnificat, Hodie, Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming Various Arrangers : Six Carols The Cornish folk tune 'The Holy Bears a Berry,' alternates between men and women's voices. Solo sections may be sung by small groups. This arrangement is best for church, community, or school choirs. 'Ding Dong! Merrily on High' is a vigorous 8 part a cappella piece with constant vocal imitation of bells. Elaborate counterpoint and canonic devices. Completely diatonic, harmonically and melodically conservative. Rhythmic ostinatos give non-stop energy leading to dazzling finish. 'Gloria in Excelsis Deo' begins and ends with a rhythmic and exciting statement of the Gloria text. The middle section is tranquil and effectively emotes the feeling of peace that is being presented in the text. The final statement is one of peace. Challenging, but well worth the work. Van's arrangement of 'Once in Royal David's City.' is an introspective and reflective setting of this Christmas standard. The composer includes many of the elements that have become associated with this hymn. This arrangement begins with either a treble solo, or with all sopranos, it then broadens into a rich setting of the following stanzas, and ends with a hushed treatment of the text "And our eyes at last shall see him." May be used in worship or concerts. 'Angels We have Heard on High' is a beautiful and energetic arrangement that is appropriate for both worship and concert use. The piece is written in a unique way that incorporates vocal accompaniments that are shared between men's and women's voices. Includes soaring descants throughout. Composed in the Australian winter of 2005, 'Ave Maria' was written by Jacobs in response to the death of a close friend's mother. Her passion for Renaissance music influenced many aspects of the piece, particularly text, and the decision to set it for two a cappella choirs. Songlist: Holly Bears a Berry, The, Ding Dong! First published in 1842, this admired composition has been carefully arranged for SAB a cappella voices. Based on a 16th century French chanson, it contains the depth of many ages. Still appropriate for the worship service, it is also a valued concert piece, useful for small choirs both young and seasoned.
Arranger: Ed Hughes | Composer: Jacob Arcadelt
A gentle a cappella setting of the traditional prayer to Mary. The texture is chordal throughout and offers an unpretentious treatment of the text, with occasional sharp dissonances adding a shimmering effect. For directors with a capable soprano soloist or section, an optional descent hangs angelically above the chorus, adding further interest and elegance to the work.
Composer: Michael John Trotta
This gentle setting has all the tranquillity and grace associated with this ancient text. It is fashioned from a simple rocking theme, which weaves serenely through different keys as the piece unfolds, culminating in a descending chain of overlapping phrases before the final hushed and reverent cadence.

Ave Maria was joint winner of the Concours Europ'een pour Choeurs et Ma^itres de Cath'edrales 1999. Its double choir forces belie its sensitive scoring and taut motivic construction, which is well within the grasp of many choirs.
Composer: Tarik O'Regan
William Tortolano has edited this canon by Mozart. "Ave Maria" is the only text. The canon is for four parts, but any combination of male and female voices is possible; or an instrument can play one of the lines if all four parts cannot be done vocally.

When creating our Simple Gifts series, we envisioned the following as the standard: a quality piece by an established composer who could craft simple, but never simplistic, music for smaller choirs. Bob Moore's setting of the "Ave Maria"-which certainly fits this description-will have use throughout the church year. Choirs will enjoy the flowing lyricism of the vocal writing, so aptly joined to this venerable text.
Composer: Bob Moore
This rich setting of the Ave Maria text captures the essence of sincerity and transformation through the progression of harmonies. The thrilling cluster chords epitomize the challenging moments in life as they relax into the simplicity of open consonance. A stunning work for capable mixed choirs from high school and up!
Composer: John Conahan

The "Ave Maria" chant forms the basis for this clever, effective piece. Hughes's original music brings warmth and depth to the wonderful setting of the traditional Latin text. It would be especially beautiful in a reverberant setting.
Composer: J Edmund Hughes
This piece for double choir (which has a companion Ave maris stella devised for separate performance) is grounded in traditional harmonic progression. An astonishing build-up of devotional intensity is achieved with near-exclusive reference to the notes of the G major diatonic scale. At the pinnacle of the piece an electrifying F natural is introduced, which, in combination with an A minor triad, replicates the climactic chord from the development section of the opening movement of Beethoven's 3rd (Eroica) Symphony. The Eroica chord has iconic status in Polish music, playing a major role in the final movement of Górecki's famed Symphony No. 3 (the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs).
Composer: Powel Lukaszewski | Country: Poland
Written for the Madison Youth Choirs, this Ave Maria setting is in a contemporary style, with two equal in range and importance voice parts. The hand chimes add a beautiful legato feel that is reflected in the singing. With flute and tone chimes.
Arranger: Dan Krunnfusz
Composed when he was only 10 years old, Emile Serper wrote this about his composition: It is my hope that this setting of Ave Maria may have a positive impact and be shared in many ways. After I heard my friends in choir rehearsing the piece, I thought the music might also say, 'Hail, Mother Earth!' It is meant to transcend religions and to serve as a prayer for our planet. The earth needs our healing.
Composer: Emile Serper
