When Fred Bock left Word Music to strike out on his own in 1968, he decided to name his new company after one of the streets on which his apartment building was located: Gentry Street inspired Gentry Publications. Such was the beginning of what would prove to be a legendary career. He chose wisely, for the other street would have derailed his publishing fate before it even began: Klump Avenue. From the beginning Gentry was an imprint designed for the school market – specifically those higher-end High School, College and University choirs. Gentry Publications continues its long tradition of publishing choral music from some of the finest American composers, arrangers, editors and conductors.

The words and melodies American song writer Stephen Foster exemplify our nation in the 19th century. Dr. Gerald Custer has maintained that character in this madrigal-like setting. The heart from a time gone by sings through in warmth and sincerity. Good high school choirs, college and community ensembles will jump at the chance to program this gem.

This well-known poem by Longfellow metaphorically paints the calming qualities of the night. What Richard Burchard does musically is enrapturing. The listener is immersed sonically into the poem even deeper. It is an obvious concert closer but stands well at other times too. Eight-part a cappella choir and tenor soloist will work best with advanced high school, college or community choirs. Medium difficulty.

K. Lee Scott is a superior arranger - he knows how to get the most out of the voice and gratify an audience. This is such a well-known spiritual and Lee piques our interest with tight, solid, harmonies that thicken and rise as the verses unfold, all the way to the vigorous finale. Great for church or school.

This Christmas piece is everything you would expect from Richard Burchard and so much more. The lovely melody and flowing harmonies are anticipated, as are the familiar words of the carol, but the accompanying syllables, some almost jazz-like, are a pleasant surprise. Premiered at the ACDA National Convention 2015, this piece marks the first double choir arrangement for a Spiritual. In a few short years Stacy Gibbs has earned the reputation as the most sought-after arranger of Spirituals in the U.S. Stacey's writing is always a pleasure to sing but this one is special, with the antiphonal choirs playing off one another and wailing sounds building a climactic finish. An obvious festival work for school. Medium difficulty.

Gibbons first wrote the famous setting of his text in 1612. The clever poem shares when a swan's voice is heard and compares it to the state of human character. Burchard not only maintains the poem but a renaissance motet style colored in 21st century harmonies. College and comminity choirs will ennjoy this brilliant work.
Arranger: Richard Burchard | Composer: Richard Burchard
