The Alfred Choral Design Series provides student and adult choirs with a variety of secular choral music that is helpful, practical, educationally appropriate and a pleasure to sing. The that end, the Choral Design series features original works, folk song settings, spiritual arrangements, choral masterworks and holiday selections suitable for use in concerts, festivals and contests.

New voicing! This gospel-style kicker is crafted with tried-and-true techniques of the genre, like rhythmic counterlines, call-and-response singing, and stacked vocal harmonies. An exuberant add-on section shifts momentarily to bluesy minor, and a huge ritard at the end invites singers to bring the power. This lively welcome song traditionally accompanies the West African fanga dance. Built on the familiar tune (plus some new material and a few English words), this general music class favorite is fully developed as a choral arrangement. Scattered handclaps, syncopated rhythms, and bright harmonies make this well-crafted setting a joy to perform! It's the classic Chirstmas poem set with swingin' jazz flair! A snazzy bass line and some backbeat finger snaps greet the opening lines, spoken stylistically in rhythm. Pass out the kazoos for this nifty novelty number that includes snippets of "Deck the Hall," "Up on the Housetop," and "Joy to the World!" The Mexican tradition of ""La Fiesta de la Posada"" recreates the search for a room at an inn. This delightful number by Sally Albrecht recreates that tradition in song with an English text that tells the story (""...when we light luminarias and swing at the piñata.""). It's a festive, cross-cultural addition to your December concerts. Features an optional solo/duet in each verse.

This enduring Hanukkah song by folk trio Peter, Paul, and Mary urges us to uphold the legacies of those who fought for freedom by promoting social justice. Here's a lighthearted folk song from Spain that's a breeze to learn and a pleasure to sing! The small-range melody is presented first in unison and then in canon. A simple ostinato adds another layer to the third verse before closing with echoing rooster calls---"Cocorí, cocorá!" Maracas and claves parts are included, or improvise your own percussion. There are only ten Spanish words in all, but if you need it, a pronunciation/translation guide is included.

This musical tribute to the aurora borealis flickers and flashes with colorful imagery. Carefully crafted for 2-part singers, it opens with independent parts that come together in a glowing chorus like lights swirling in the winter sky. This Torres Strait Islands folk song presents a wonderful opportunity for a cappella choirs to perform with authentic world percussion instruments (common alternates offered). All the voicings are built on a traditional repeat structure that begins in unison and unfolds into more harmony with each verse. A brief bridge of original music punctuates the repeated sections. Choirs around the globe have enjoyed adding movement to this playful nature song.
