A lack of formal musical education didn't slow him down, and he shortly thereafter (along with three friends from the Canberra School of Music's vocal jazz ensemble), co-founded what was to become Australia's most successful, most awarded, best-selling and longest-running contemporary a cappella groups ever.

5 octaves. What more needs to be said?

I suppose we could mention that he's an award-winning songwriter. And arranger. Or the fact that he's a visual artist, a writer, and a comedian who dazzles audiences with his wit as much as his voice.

And yes, his voice does stun fans and critics alike. He showcases his jaw-dropping range with amazing versatility and dexterity. From rumbling, grooving vocal bass lines to country crooning to soaring pop leads, Tim does it all.

His solo album, The Best That I Could Do, which was written and recorded at Flying Pig Productions in Orange County, California, was met with rave reviews. It features Tim's signature humor as well as poignant lyrics and of course stellar vocals.

In 1969, he formed the first version of The Manhattan Transfer with Gene Pistilli, Marty Nelson, Erin Dickins and Pat Rosalia. The group had a country/R&B sound. Together they recorded one album, Jukin', on the Capitol label. However, they differed in ideas on direction: Pistilli leaned more toward a country-western, "Memphis" R&B sound, whereas Tim was interested in a jazz/swing sound. Alastair Hume

"I was a monumentally unpromising boy treble, and was also described by Sir David Willcocks as the worst alto he'd ever had in his choir (King's, Cambridge), two sure-fire preconditions for making a career in music. The decision to go down the musical path and not make further use of my law degree was, I'm sure, greeted with a collective sigh of relief by the legal profession; what sort of sigh the music profession sighed at that decision is, at the moment, unknown but probably huge and horrified.

"After twenty-five years on the road with The King's Singers, and even more years on the fiddle as a bass player, the business of music-making at the highest level that seemed so important at the time (as indeed it was then) has yielded a rich harvest of irony, humour, downright silliness and huge enjoyment at having been a part of all that.

Member of: King's Singers (Former) - Countertenor

David Hurley

The English counter-tenor, David Hurley, began his singing as a chorister at Winchester Cathedral. At the age of 14 he started using his falsetto in his school choir, and his fragile counter-tenor won him choral scholarship to New College, Oxford, which he inhabited for three years from 1981 until 1984.

Armed with a degree in geography David Hurley began his life as a freelance singer, specialising in higher falsetto parts with groups such as the Gabrieli Consort. The opportunity to audition with The King's Singers came in 1989, and he joined the line-up in February 1990.

In his free time David Hurley enjoys cooking, reading, sailing and doing sudokus; some of these things being more easily done on tour than others. He lives with his wife, Sarah, in the county of West Sussex near the coast, and near his small sailing boat.
