The rough and tumble life of a sailor and his adventures on the high seas is celebrated in this rousing English sea shanty known from Nova Scotia to Australia.

The main idea behind this unique work is that music is the ultimate gift and that all things must pass. Opening with a Latin phrase and theme by di Lassus, it moves into a jaunty, Celtic-flavored tune with a text constructed from anecdotes written by members of the commissioning choir. Weaving together the melodies and texts of three Korean folk songs, Stephen Hatfield has created a seven-minute suite that suggests two contrasting moods of romantic longing - one full of vigor and action, the other more reflective. Inspired by the traditional Sami yoik, a very old vocal tradition among the Sami people of Scandinavia and Russia, this beautiful music was used in the Disney animated film Frozen. Hatfield uses the old Italian technique of matching the vowels of her name to the corresponding sol-fa syllables to create an ostinato that metaphorically translates her into music. The piece combines poignancy with lots of sparkle, lots of interlocking ostinati. The mix of tenderness and energy has effected audiences strongly. On the line between medium and advanced.

Norway is a country rich in folk tradition, and in this piece, elements of folk dance and instrumental music are clearly represented. Grace was commissioned by the Sloan Creek Middle School a cappella treble choir for their performance at the 2013 national ACDA convention in Dallas. Despite references to brief, bright moments fading fast, sorrowing hours and all we mourn, all we keep, the poetic and musical mood is not dark, but warm and hopeful. With the sensitive piano stylings that we have come to expect from David Brunner, this is a wonderful opportunity for young women to dig deep into their emotions.

Written for the Nashir Choral Festival in the Bronx, New York, Nick Page uses many elements from his arrangement of Niska Banja: the key of F, the piano ostinato, the pedal tones in the chorus, and the driving pulse with the tenor and the alto drones. Written to be a reflection on the power of love, the composer has constructed a semi-gospel anthem with a slow groove that allows each singer to find meaning in the word love for their own lives. Mbiri kuna Mwari is composed in the spirit of choral music heard at the Episcopal Cathedral in Harare, Zimbabwe, in the summer of 1993. Shona is the majority tribe in Zimbabwe and its language. The text is the Shona translation of the opening section of the Gloria of the Mass Ordinary.

Using both French and English, the composer has created a piece for the Mosaik choral festival with the message that every tile contributes equally when building a mosaic and each every voice contributes to building a choir and a community. Munoera (Sanctus) is part of the Shona Mass, an original work composed in the spirit of music heard at the Episcopal Cathedral in Harare, Zimbabwe. The text is a combination of Shona and liturgical Latin and may be performed with SSA or TBB a cappella voices and percussion. Djembe, claves, shekere, and hand drum parts are included in the score.

To Central Europeans, the 9/8 rhythm of 2-2-2-3 is as natural as a 4/4 rock beat is in North America, and rapidly becomes both infectious and quite natural.
