Thomas Morley was an English composer, theorist, singer and organist of the Renaissance. He was one of the foremost members of the English Madrigal School. Referring to the strong Italian influence on the English madrigal, The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians states that Morley was "chiefly responsible for grafting the Italian shoot on to the native stock and initiating the curiously brief but brilliant flowering of the madrigal that constitutes one of the most colourful episodes in the history of English music." Living in London at the same time as Shakespeare, Morley was the most famous composer of secular music in Elizabethan England. He and Robert Johnson are the composers of the only surviving contemporary settings of verse by Shakespeare. Morley was active in church music as a singer, composer and organist at St Paul's Cathedral. He was also involved in music publishing. From 1598 up to his death he held a printing patent (a type of monopoly). He used the monopoly in partnership with professional music printers such as Thomas East. |

Laboravi in gemitu meo by the Renaissance English composer and one of the principle members of the Madrigal School. This work, expertly edited by Lionel Pike, is arranged for unaccompanied SSAATB Chorus and lasts around 5 minutes.
Add a Renaissance touch to your holiday concerts! Madrigal for Christmas is fashioned after the ballettos of Italy which featured the popular fa la la refrains. In this piece, Morley uses a different nonsense refrain, lirum, lirum, which might be a sound effect imitating the strummed lute, a popular instrument from the Renaissance.

Just like many pop songs of today, English Renaissance madrigals, the pop songs of their time, mention loved ones by name. Two of the most frequent to crop up are Phyllis and Amaryllis, both names derived from Greek mythology and obviously popular in the 16th century. These five charming madrigals all refer to ladies named Phyllis and Amaryllis, including one which has both! The collection includes: Adieu, sweet Amaryllis (John Wilbye), Fair Phyllis (John Farmer), I love, alas, I love thee (Thomas Morley), See, see the shepherds' queen (Thomas Tomkins), Though Amaryllis dance in green (William Byrd).
Fashioned after the 16th century Ballettos of Italy which featured the popular fal, la, la refrains. This is a worthy addition to the Choral Treasury series that John Leavitt has been curating and countless directors of serious music have been seeking.
