The madrigal composed in England during the late sixteenth century and early seventeenth centuries include some of the finest music of the period and are possibly superior in truth and expressiveness even to the madrigals composed in Italy, where the form was invented and flourished over a long period. Faced with many hundreds of possible candidates for inclusion in the edition, the editor worked on the principal that the major composers would each be represented by several madrigals, and the lesser figures by one or more. But no madrigal would be included if it fell below the high standard set by the collection as a whole. Over 60 madrigals are included.

Russell Robinson has adapted "Fire, Fire", one of Thomas Morley's most enduring madrigals, for 3-part voices, just right for today's young and developing choirs. The male part has a limited, 5-note range...great for changing voices. The independent vocal lines make it an excellent learning piece and a perfect "first madrigal" for any choir. Carefully tailored to the needs of middle school and junior high singers. "All Ye Who Love Music" was given its English text by Thomas Oliphant in 1837. This arrangement has been lowered one step from the original key of G major to F major. The soprano (Part 1) melody is basically the same; however, Parts II and III have been arranged iin such a way as to limit the range and for ease of singing, while retaining the sound and flavor of the original. Founded in Minnesota in 1937, the 39-strong mixed-voice Bemidji Choir has been directed since 1998 by the renowned Dr. P. Bradley Logan, who also directs the BSU Chamber Singers, a 14-voice ensemble chosen by audition from the Choir. On "Beneath" we hear 6 songs by the full choir, 8 by the Chamber Singers and then 7 more by the choir. Sacred music like Peter Phillips' "Surgens Jesus," Johann Michael Bach's "Sei, lieber Tag, wilkommen," "The Lamb" and "The Tiger" by Eric Barnum, "Come, Love We God," and "Hark, Hark What News the Angels Bring" coexist nicely with traditional and folk music like Edwin Fissinger's "Nelly Bly," "This Endris Night" and "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair," Bob Chilcott's "The Gift to be Simple" and Jonathan Quick's "Loch Lomond." The Indiana University Children's Choir comprises six choirs for children from kindergarten through high school. All children can find a place in one of those choirs regardless of training. Three choirs are represented here, the Treble Choir has the bright sound of girls 9 and 10 years old, the Chamber Choir, for older girls and boys with unchanged voices, and the Youth Chorale, a mixed group of high school singers with voices moving into adulthood. There are 22 songs here, we particularly enjoyed four movements by Brahms, "Liebeslied No.'s 8, 10, 13 and 18," Cobb's "Cantate Domino," Sprenkle's "For a Dewdrop," the moody "Erev Shel Shoshanim," Hatfield's "La Lluvia" and "Fair Phyllis I Saw," the folk spinning song "Sarasponda," Morley's "Sing We and Chant It," Franck's "Da Pacem Domine," James Taylor's "That Lonesome Road," and the Wm. Dawson spiritual "Soon Ah Will Be Done." Some light piano accompaniment. "Seasons" is a varied, spirited and enjoyable collection by this fine Midwestern children's choir.

When Mary Martin debuted in Rodgers and Hammerstein's hugely popular "The Sound of Music" in 1959, the play's subjects, the Von Trapp Family, had recently concluded their successful music career. Touring the world for 20 years, they brought a unique mixture of liturgical music, madrigals, folk music and instrumentals to audiences in over 30 countries. Loosely based on the life story of Captain Georg von Trapp, his second wife Maria, and his 7 children by his first wife, Agathe. The music of the play was quite different from the music performed by the Trapps in thousands of live performances, but fortunately they recorded hundreds of choral and instrumental works with RCA and Decca. One Voice is the first definitive compilation, a two-CD set of 36 songs apiece, of the choir's musical history, from 1935 to 1956.
