Various Arrangers : Men's Spirituals Vol. 2

Review: Experience this fiery work, "Every Time I Feel The Spirit" and "feel the Spirit" add vitality to any choral program. Hold on to your choir robes! This invigorating a cappella adaptation of "Sinner Man" will bring your audience to their feet! In keeping with Sister Rosetta Tharpe's stylistic blend, this arrangement of "Heaven Somewhere" has a funky doo-wop flavored middle section that reminds us just how many different rock styles go back to the gospel source. In , "Go Down, Moses," Moses Hogan's contemporary settings of spirituals, original compositions, and other works have been enthusiastically accepted by audiences around the globe and have become staples in the repertoires of high school, college, church, community and professional choirs everywhere. Perhaps the spiritual closest associated with Norman Luboff's arranging style is "Deep River." It requires the fine singing of a well trained a cappella choir, high school choir and beyond. Moderately difficult. Destined to become a standard this new setting of "Witness" for men's voices features the classic Moses Hogan style. Opening with a section of sustained close harmony, "Plenty Of Good Room," moves into a medium tempo jazz-flavored groove that's pure delight! An ideal showcase for men's chorus! From the quiet beginning to the joy-filled ending, your men will gladly proclaim, "Rise and Shine and Give God the Glory!"

Various Arrangers : Sacred A Cappella Choral Anthems

Review: 'Wait on the Lord' is based on the text in Psalm 27:14 and Isaiah 40:31, put together by Rosephanye Powell. This beautifully harmonized piece starts out with the basses, then builds, adding each voice one at a time until measure 13 when all voices are singing together. 'The Word Was God' is another text by Rospehanye Powell, based on John 1:1-3. In this piece, both the male voices and the female voices get their opportunities to shine. Each part is divisi at one point or another. Robert H. Young's 'Show Us Your Mercy, O Lord,' is based on the text in Psalm 85:7-11,13. In this piece, the women split up into gorgeous four-part harmony, the men's voices create a great vocal accompanyment throughout. Robert h. Young's other gem, 'The Christ-Child' is an excellently composed choral with a few divisi parts to sweeten-up the lush chords throughout. His 'Treasures in Heaven' is another piece not to be missed with ample amounts of soli men and women sections throughout. The challenging chord progressions and multiple dynamic changes will allow your large advanced choir to show their chops

Various Arrangers : Songs From The Gospels

Review: The haunting melody of "No Room" is harmonized in the Dorian mode and captures the irony of the Son of Man having no place to lay his head. No Room has a spiritual-like quality, yet the modal tonalities and occasional "jazz" chords give it a unique, almost ethereal feel. Seamless, chilling, and very moving. "I Am the Vine" is a beautiful worship or concert octavo. Tight harmonies and a flowing mixed meter give this expressive anthem a smooth ebb-and-flow, give-and- take feeling, very much like the spiritual relationship described in the text. "When I Was A Child" - Larry Nickel takes texts from both the Old and New Testaments and touches them with his creative magic to produce a lush tapestry of choral color and sound. This challenging octavo gives thoughtful directors ample opportunity for expressive performance moments. A multi-use choral, it is well suited for use as an introit, benediction or theme anthem. "Grace Be With You" - Joel Phillips takes the words of John 2:3 and touches it with a cappella beauty in this fresh new anthem. Suitable as a benediction or as a general use anthem, this choral uses a lush tonal vocabulary that brings to the text warmth and expressiveness that are very compelling. "They Shall Soar On Wings Like Eagles" - The celebrated words of Isaiah 40:28-31 take wing in this Tim Rumsey choral setting. There are many beautiful moments in this work and larger ensembles will revel in the thick divided harmonies. The expressive palette of choral colors and textures build the work to an impressive climax. This inspiring affirmation of God's strength and care is appropriate for programming any time of year. There is a joyful spirit to this a cappella choral from this new Mark Foster composer with a gentle "islands" feel, making it the perfect sorbet for your menu of music this year. Use the optional percussion for an authentic festive touch.

Songlist: No Room, I Am The Vine, When I Was A Child, Grace Be With You, They Shall Soar On Wings Like Eagles, My Heart Is Steadfast, O God!

Various Arrangers : Spirituals for Mixed Voices Vol 3

Review: In Witness, the men and women start in a call and response fashion, the next change comes with a fun walkin bass line with the rest of the voices singing beautiful harmonies... this is a fun tune! The rhythmic and expressive setting of the well known Spiritual, 'Rockin' Jerusalem' is a tribute to the work of Dale Warland. This arrangement will make an inspiring concert work for a skilled A Cappella choir. Originally, 'Wade in the Water' was a code song of the African-American slave that cautioned slaves to travel by water on their journey to freedom. Powell's arrangement captures the drama with beautiful harmony and powerful dynamics. The light humming of harmonies that start 'Somebody's Knockin' At Yo' Do'' will give you an idea of how exciting this piece could become, and sure enough it doesn't faulter from that expectation once throughout the song, this is a fantastic arrangement!

Various Arrangers : Women's Spirituals Vol 3

Review: 'Down in the Valley to Pray' was featured in the film 'O Brother Where Art Thou?' (only it was titled 'Down in River to Pray'), workers in a field sang the song with great fervor as they swung their hoes plowing the land. The song is African-American in origin, perhaps with some Appalachian influence due to the use of the pentatonic scale. The piece should be sung with great energy, with an ever-strong pulse on the first beat of the measure. The ever-popular spiritual, 'Wade in the Water' is especially fun to sing in this arrangement. It lends itself to accompaniment well, or it can be sung a cappella. The great 3 part harmony mixed with the very expressive dynamics make it very fun to sing. The wonderful melody hardly needs decoration. At times, indeed, it seems that harmony merely gets in its way. This arrangement is intended to highlight the tune's effectiveness through its simple and straightforward persentation. With the possible exception of a slight slowing in the final few measures, the piece should remain in tempo thorughout, and dynamics should err on the side of comfortably soft. 'The 'river' figure should remain a background murmur with little or no change in dynamic. Joan Szymko's 'Amazing Grace' is very exciting, there isn't a boring line in any voice part. 'Simple Gifts' is one of 12.000 songs composed by the Shakers during the middle of the nineteenth century. Thought to be written by Shaker Elder Joseph Brackett, the song was both an instruction for like as well sa an instruction for dancing. This arrangement starts out unison before breaking off into glorious 4 part women's harmonies.

Songlist: Down in the Valley to Pray, Some of These Days, Amazing Grace, Simple Gifts

Review: "My Soul's Been Anchored In The Lord" - The iconic spiritual arrangement by Moses Hogan has been masterfully adapted for treble voices by Rollo Dilworth. From the powerful opening chords to the exhilarating call and response sections, this is a work that will bring down the house! "Keep Yo' Lamps" - Renowned composer Rosephanye Powell takes a traditional "field shout" and presents it with care for an authentic sound. There is great passion in this approach and will provide an excellent opportunity to teach the history of the African American spiritual and its importance. "Hold Me, Rock Me" - Brian Tate cleverly combined the texts from a variety of frequently used spirituals to create a brand new choral selection. The yearning for belonging is quickly evident and rocks gently to a satisfying finish. Brian Tate has been composing and arranging a steady string of choral hits that deserves our attention."Roll, Jordan, Roll" - This great, rocking spiritual arranged by Brian Tate is simply fun to sing! A.R. Rahman : Music From the Indian Cinema

Review: Jai Ho was written for the 2008 Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire. While this is a British movie, director Tony Boyle wanted to acknowledge Indian tradition. He asked A.R. Rahman to write a song in the style of his music for the Indian cinema to be choreographed and performed during the ending credits. The resulting piece is a victory dance capturing the essence of the movie's story. Balleilakka is a song from the Tamil film Sivaji, which means "The Boss." The text of this piece is a tongue-twister lamenting how traditional Indian culture is being subsumed and listing the speaker's memories of his homeland in increasingly faster syllabic patterns. O Saya was written for the Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire. The song appears at the beginning as we are introduced to just how horrible living conditions are int he slums of India. The lyrics have no meaning, nor does the title. They are just nonsense syllables that form a wail. The melodic patterns are based loosely on the patterns one might hear in the slums as the Muslim call to worship blasts from the minarets, but they are more a call to action than a call to prayer. When people sing this piece, hopefully they will consider taking some action against poverty themselves. Barso Re, written by A. R. Rahman and arranged for choir by Ethan Sperry, appeared in the soundtrack of the 2007 film Guru. It is an Indian take on how beautiful it can be to sing in the rain. For percussion, use a beaded gourd shaker, rasp, or tambourine for the upper line and one or more djembes or floor toms for the lower line.

Songlist: Jai Ho!, Balleilakka, O Saya, Zikr, Barso Re

Astor Piazzolla : Tangos in Vocal Harmony

Review: It has been said that you can see Buenos Aires while listening to Astor Piazzolla's music. This is one of his talents that sets him apart from other composers. Piazzolla made a revolution with the tango, which created many problems for him in his country (traditionalists did not accept his music as tango). But everybody finally accepted his changes because his music put the Argentine dance, the tango, at the highest level. Gentle tango rhythms and modern harmonies infuse these folk-like tunes.

The setting of Matthew 11:28-30"Come Unto Me" is a comforting solace for the weary, with layered vocal phrases and soothing harmonies. Salamu Aleikum : Choral Music of the Muslim World

Review: Muslim choral music? There are numerous examples of group singing in the Muslim world, almost all of which is non-notated. Many of these group singing genres date back several centuries, such as the genre of Arab music called the muwashshahat, a song tradition that started in Muslim Spain and has continued vigorously until modern times. While there are numerous examples of Muslim group singing, notated part-singing is a product of colonization, Westernization, Christianization, and now globalization. It is becoming increasingly popular for composers in the Muslim world to arrange and compose music for the Western-style choir, and this collection serves to introduce participants to the breadth of Muslim culture, some Muslim songs, and the great diaspora of music of the Muslim world through a selection of pieces from different social, and cultural contexts.

Stephen Leek : Aussie Songs

Review: "Kumbargung" - One of the easiest and most immediately appealing from Stephen Leek's In Construction series. It is suitable for singers of all ages and uses indigenous Australian words that are spoken in rhythm at various pitch levels. "Kumbargung" means "night" and other evocative words include "ungi gungi" (grasshopper) and "goolay yali" (pelican). A delight for all ages! "Tunggare" means "voice" or "to sing" in an Australian dialect. This is a wonderful opening or closing to a concert. There is much repetition and very easy tenor and bass parts, so it is perfect for a high school choir (and other choirs as well!). It may also be used as a choral piece for audience participation. "Riawanna" is an Australian native word for "circles" and the piece is a do-it-yourself round with thousands of possibilities. It includes mixed meters. The final instruction in the accompanying notes says it all: "have fun".

Stephen Leek : Songs Of Passage

Review: Stephen Leek's famous work from Songs of Passage. "Ngana" means "shark" and the piece strikingly captures the driving energies, rhythms and vivid colors of the island seascape found around the northeastern tip of Australia. Pronounced "ungahyullyull" meaning "hawk dreaming". The text reflects the thoughts of the sheep farmer herding his sheep, ever aware of the hawk circling overhead. The second of Stephen Leek's Songs of Passage, this is a highly evocative and beautiful composition using easy but effective modern compositional techniques. The music includes "boxes" of material for singers to work through as well as traditionally scored sections. The writing is easy to sing though it contains some chord clusters. Some song texts in an Australian Aboriginal language, some in English. Lots of fun here!

Various Arrangers : Folk Songs of the Philippines

Review: Chua-ay is based on a popular folksong in the Philippines that depicts the Igorot tribes at work, pounding rice by means of a huge mortar and heavily weighted posts in order to separate the rice grains from their outer shells or husks. The piece begins with bird-calls serenely chanted by two sopranos and followed by a set of rhythmic vari- ations on the repetitive three-note theme of Chua-ay. Foot stomps suggest the mortar and pestle action that also enhances the earthy character of this northern folksong. Leron, Leron sinta or "My Dear, Little Leron," is a popular Filipino folk song from the Tagalog region. It is traditionally a work song, reprsenting those who work in the fields harvesting fruits, though the origin is unclear due to the lack of scholarly literature that examines Philippine folk music. Because of its catchy tune, it is often presented as a children's song, though some parts of the text may have been meant for a more mature audience. Some sources also refer to it as a courtship song. "Ilay Gandangan" is a popular piece among Filipino choirs. Derived from a sun chant of the Maguindanao tribe, the people call on the sun god, Ilay, to end the rain that is covering the land.

Various Arrangers : Japanese Folk Songs

Review: Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry comprised of three lines of five, seven, and five syllables. Jerry Estes has crafted a set of four short pieces set to original haiku... one for each season of the year. All are beautiful in their simplicity. Well suited for Orff accompaniment; bells and rhythm instrument parts are included in the publication. An outstanding learning and performing piece for 2-part choirs. A delicate melody swirls and twirls like drifting snow in this tasteful arrangement of a traditional Japanese school song "Yuki". The three short Japanese phrases (and several English words) are easy-to-learn and bring to mind icy images of wintertime. "Uji River" is the most unique multicultural piece you will sing this year. A primarily English text tells the spectacular story of an ancient Japanese fishing tradition on the Uji River. And a traditional Asian folk melody floats above a gentle koto-like piano. Magical for treble voices, and highly effective when TB singers sound like fishermen. Tsuki means "moon," and is one of just a few Japanese words sung in this pentatonic scale-based song. Other words describe the beauty of the Japanese moon throughout the year. A captivating and memorable piece.

Review: The exuberant arrangement of an Eastern Inner Mongolian folk song "Dorven Dalai' exhorts everyone from the Four Seas (the "four corners of the earth" or all nations) to fill their wine bowls with the best of wine, to rejoice and sing and enjoy this moment of happiness together. "Naiman Sharag" - Mongolian songs often praise horses, real and legendary, reflecting the close relationship between horses and humans. A 13th century chronicle refers to the eight chestnut horses of Chinggis Khan, and they have thus become a symbol of national identity which embodies the Mongol's love for their native language and culture. Indigenous Mongolian musical rhythms are often patterned after the rhythm of a running horse. Such rhythms represent one of the major ethnic features of Mongolian music, and can be found throughout this piece. "Zeregleent Gobi" was written for the Inner Mongolian Youth Chorus Troupe and "Bless Us, O God" is an a cappella setting of a Mongolian prayer.

Review: "Eagle Hill" - Young voices will soar like the eagle in this accessible work for treble choir. The text was shaped from a ritual song of the Pawnee nation which revered the eagle for its strength and wisdom. Students from the commissioning choir wrote poetry, which the composer incorporated into this setting. "Songs of the Earth" - This choral pairs two venerable Native American songs: a Hopi chant and a traditional Arapaho Native song. With recorders and percussion, the songs are blended together to form a partner song at the conclusion of the piece. A striking addition to your concert! "Canoe Song" - A favorite North American tune is creatively arranged incorporating unison and 2-part harmony, round and partner-style singing with original music. Review: "Come on the Trail of Song" - Memley celebrates the Native American culture with an exquisite triptych of poems and song called Three Native American Settings. The original music is consumed with the sounds of the Native American spirit in all three selections. Although they can be performed separately, the set provides a reverent tribute to a beautiful culture. "Shoshone Love Song" - This tender setting of a Native American poem features extended legato phrasing and delicate musicality. The simple piano accompaniment supports the expressive vocal textures. Ideal for concert or festival programming! "Onokenoga" (or Lake of the Gods to the Mohawk First Nation people) depicts an ancient Mohawk legend of tragic romance. So deep was the connection between these two young lovers, legend has it that the spirit of the young girl wanders the shores to this day searching for her lost mate. "Waniska" - The Cree Indians from the North American continent have a delightful morning song that has been artfully arranged by Brian Tate. Beginning with bird sounds the melody line is first presented by the sopranos. A pedal point is set by the tenors and basses as the altos take their turn with the tune. As with so many Tate arrangements, staging is easily a part of the presentation, as the simple lines cross and lift one another. Some suggestions are provided but each group will find their own path. "Spirit of the Winding Water (A Navajo Prayer)" Native American wisdom and philosophy provide rich awareness of finding the sacred in all things. Shona is the majority tribe in Zimbabwe and its language. The text is the Shona translation of the opening section of the Gloria of the Mass Ordinary. Although these pieces can be performed alone, it is actually a partner with "Sano Duso." "Ajde Jano" is a playful love song that frolics and skips as its text celebrates dancing and singing. Various Arrangers : African Folk Songs

Review: The first two South African Folk Songs are in Shangani. The first seems to be in recognition of the arrival of the first white settlers off the west coast of Africa, ostensibly in the 17th century. The second, Tulan, Nimamele!, speaks for itself. They are both best done in a strong, boisterous fashion. Freedom Come is The closing movement of Bandari: Inside These Walls, a five-movement work encompassing a variety of African styles and combining Swahili and English texts. Various Arrangers : Canadian Folk Songs

Review: "Nukapianguaq" (pronounced Nuhk-ah-pee-ang-guaq) attempts to present Inuit music in a choral setting that remains as faithful as possible to the aesthetics of the original tradition. Inuit chants are usually reflective in nature and spiritual in intent. "On The Rooms" - An audience need not be familiar with the history of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada's easternmost province, to get the sense that an epic story is unfolding before them. Based on the maritime heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador, this modern folk song creates an atmosphere of sea air and hard work. The arrangement of this beautiful Indian song "Land of the Silver Birch" was made by the Finnish music educator Pentti Paalanen in the 1970s for his high school choir in the town of Joensuu. Since all three verses are set to the same music, the necessary contrasts must come from a careful consideration of the text. These contrasts, or variations, need not be very great, however, as a certain monotony and mystery belongs to the character of this song. This Canadian Folksong "Petty Harbour Bait Skiff" describes the tragic sinking of a Bait Skiff near Petty Harbour in 1852, losing all but one of the crew.

Songlist: On The Rooms, Land of the Silver Birch, Nukapianguaq, Petty Harbour Bait Skiff, Oolichan
