Songlist: Wexford Carol, Sussex Carol, Once in a Royal David City, Coventry Carol, Masters in This Hall Various Arrangers : Christmas Carols For Children's Choruses 'Lullay, Lullow' (aka 'Mary's Lullaby') is a 2 part arrangement of the 15th Century English carol. Short, but sweet, this carol is perfect for your beginning choir. Betty Bertaux's 3 part arrangement of 'The Holly and the Ivy' is an excellent edition to your Holiday program, and it also is a great tool to help your children's choir learn to sing polyrhythmic harmonies. 'Christmas Bells' is based on the text written by Heny Wadsworth Longfellow, which he wrote in 1863. During that Christmas season, his son was critically wounded in a war, and the text expresses his anguish over war and his longing for peace on earth. The message is as timely today as it was over 125 years ago. While technically challenging, this setting is a must have in your repertoire! Mary Goetze's arrangement of 'Wexford Carol' (from Ireland) has exquisite 3 part harmonies and gives that special voice in your choir the opportunity for an 8 measure solo. Her arrangement of 'Infant Holy' is another 3 part masterpiece, not to be missed! Both pieces would work well for an advanced children's choir or young women's choir. Songlist: The Holly And The Ivy, Christmas Bells, Wexford Carol, Infant Holy Celtic Woman : A Christmas Celebration Enjoy 16 classic Christmas songs as well as as Gaelic rendition of "The Night in Bethlehem" with Celtic Woman: A Christmas Celebration. Exotic, beautiful music in different languages, and from different cultures, that relates to the celebration of Christmas. Another winner from the sweet, harmonic voices of Aquabella! Some of these groups were founded by members of Shaw's Atlanta Symphony Chorus and have survived over the decades to make their own name. The Atlanta Singers, begun 24 years ago, is among the most notable. David Brensinger conducts the Singers, whose repertoire on "Chantez" includes sacred Renaissance masterworks (Praetorius' "Psallite," "Swete Was The Song the Virgine Soong," Victoria's "O Magnum Mysterium," and "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen"), traditional carols ("Il est ne," "Wassail Song," "Silent Night," "Jingle Bells" and "Deck The Hall"), traditional Spanish carols ("A la nanita nana" and "Esta noche nace un Nino"), and traditional French carols ("Dans les hombres de la nuit," the title tune, and "Entre le boeuf et l'ane gris"). Intricate, classical harmonies perfectly sung by this talented ensemble. Songlist: Psallite/Singt Und Klingt, Swete Was the Song the Virgine Soong, O Magnum Mysterium, Verbum Caro Factum Est: Y la Virgen le Dezia, Es Ist ein Ros' entsprungen, Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine, Wexford Carol, Quem Pastores, Three Christmas Motets:, -Quem Vidistis, Patores?, O Magnum Mysterium, -HodieChristus Natus Est, Lullay Lord Jesus, Rise, Up, Shepherd, and Follow, Il est ne, Wassail Song, Two Spanish Carols:, -Spanish Lullaby "A la nanita nana", -Spanish Carol "Esta Noche nace un Nino", Three French Carols:, -Dans les Ombres de la nuit, -Entre le boeuf et l'ane gris, -Chantex Noel, Silent Night, Go, Tell it on the Mountain, Rockin' for the World, Jingle Bells, Deck the Hall Bella Voce Women's Chorus : Christmas Joy Pride of Vermont since their founding by the renowned Dr. Willis, the 40-strong Bella Voce Women's Chorus brings us a bright, ringing Christmas album of 20 songs, some of them familiar and beloved, like "The Sussex Carol," "Wexford Carol," John Rutter's "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day," "A La Nanita Nana," the spirituals "Mary Had A Baby" and "Glory and Honor to the Newborn King;" "Jesus, Jesus Rest Your Head," "I Wonder As I Wander," the Christmas medley "Christmas Intrada," Benjamin Britten's "This Little Babe" and Brahms' "Ave Maria." and many of them less familiar to us, like "Masters in this Hall," "O My Dear Heart," Eleanor Daley's "What Sweeter Music," "La Virgen Lava Panales," "The Moon of Wintertime," "A la Ru, A la Me" and Steven Rickards' "Angels Did Sing." Most songs have some light to heavy accompaniment, and the lovely, extensive liner notes have all the lyrics. Songlist: The Sussex Carol, Masters in This Hall, Wexford Carol, O My Dear Heart, Tomorrow Shall be My Dancing Day, A La Nanita Nana, Mary Had A Baby, Jehovah Hallelujah, Glory and Honor to the Newborn King, Christmas Intrada, What Sweeter Music, La Virgen Lava Panales, The Moon of Wintertime, This Little Babe, Jesus, Jesus Rest Your Head, I Wonder as I Wander, A la Ru, A la Me, Angels Did Sing, Magnificat Cambridge Singers : The John Rutter Christmas Album The Renowned, 31-strong Cambridge Singers have a present for us: 23 songs of Christmas, many of them written, composed and/or arranged by contemporary composer John Rutter, a giant in the Choral world. "Jesus Child," "There Is A Flower," "Donkey Carol," "Wildwood Carol," "Angels' Carol," "Mary's Lullaby" - Rutter's original music is lovely, and the CS are the group to do it justice. Also fine are all the traditional carols like "I Saw Three Ships" and "Joy to the World." The songs are divided into six sections: Prologue, The Christmas Story, Christmas Night, Christmas Reflections, Christmas Joy and Epilog. Most of the songs are accompanied by the London Sinfonia. The liner notes are extensive and beautiful. A monumental achievement for the Cambridge Singers, a generous, spirited and brilliant Christmas CD! Songlist: Wexford Carol, The Christmas story - Jesus child, There Is a Flower, Donkey Carol, Wild Wood Carol, Angels' Carol, Nativity Carol, Mary's lullaby, Star Carol, Candlelight Carol, Shepherd's Pipe Carol, Christmas lullaby, Dormi, Jesu, Love Came Down at Christmas, Sans Day Carol, I Wonder as I Wander, What Sweeter Music, Joy to the World, I Saw Three Ships, Deck the Hall, The Very Best Time of Year, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Silent Night Cantabile - The London Quartet : Christmas with Cantabile Founded as an a cappella group at Cambridge and one of our favorite British male quartets, Cantabile's pure, bright, spirited harmonies have won them many fans over the years. With most arrangements done by the group, we could expect some of the group's trademark humor, which comes in spades on their a cappella "Twelve Days of Christmas," featuring silly and rude barnyard sound effects that underline the absurd problems associated with having an impossibly generous "true love." Other favorites are the spirited, a cappella "Gaudete!," a romantic "Winter Wonderland," a very Bing Crosby-like take on "White Christmas," the lovely a cappella "Wexford Carol" and "Coventry Carol," "The Jimmy Brown Song," which has added lyrics which may or may not be tongue-in-cheek; and a Doo-Wop "Lonely This Christmas," (ditto). Tom Lehrer's quintessentially sarcastic "A Christmas Carol" has no such ambiguity, nor does the silly "The Carol Singers." "Silent Night," also sung in German a la The Comedian Harmonists," one of Cantabile's favorite influences, attempts to make amends for the craziness, but the surprising musical collage "Carol" and the bonus track "Les Trois Cloches," which is, as far as we can tell, "Jimmy Brown" sung sweetly and dramatically in French, are certainly non-traditional and may be parodies. There is piano accompaniment on several cuts. "Christmas with Cantabile" is a beautifully sung and arranged, eclectic, often silly and unexpected collection that we totally enjoyed, and we bet that you will too! Songlist: Winter Wonderland, The Little Road to Bethlehem, Gaudete!, Tua Bethlem Dref, The Twelve Days of Christmas, Wexford Carol, White Christmas, Susser die Glocken nie Klingen, Coventry Carol, The First Mercy, The Jimmy Brown Song, Lonely This Christmas, A Christmas Carol, The Christmas Song, The Carol Singers, Silent Night, Carol, Les Trois Cloches CenturyMen : Beautiful Star Established in 1969, the CenturyMen is an auditioned men's chorus of professional musicians who are directors of music in Baptist churches across the country. The group has extensively toured the US, and has performed in churches, concert halls and on nationwide telecasts. Concert tours in foreign countries include Brazil, Russia, China, Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Switzerland, Israel and Turkey. "Beautiful Star" is a Christmas album, heavily accompanied by piano, Hammond and pip organ, electric piano, mandolin, guitar and percussion, that features 21 songs. Many of the songs are beautifully-arranged standards such as "O Holy Night," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Wexford Carol," "O Come All Ye Faithful," "Rise Up Shepherd/Go Tell It on the Mountain," "Silent Night," "Joy to the World" the spirited round "This Little Babe" and "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," are all wonderfully done by this veteran chorus. A few are new to us, the joyous "O Jerusalem in the Morning," the lovely, waltz-like "O Beautiful Star of Bethlehem," the dramatic "What You Gonna Name Your Pretty Little Baby" and the rhythmic "Ain't That a-Rockin'," and these are the hits of the album. The CenturyMen have a powerful, rich harmonic sound (which we would love to hear unaccompanied) that rivals that of the best Barbershop Harmony Society choruses, and "Beautiful Star" is a joy from beginning to end! Songlist: O Holy Night, Angels We Have Heard On High, Mosaic Noel 1 "Fear not: for, behold...", Wexford Carol, Glory, Glory, Hallelujah, Mosaic Noel 2 "...I bring you good tidings of great joy..., O Jerusalem in the Morning, Beautiful Star of Bethlehem, Mosaic Noel 3 "...which shall be to all people..., What You Gonna Name Your Pretty Little Baby, This Little Babe, Mosaic Noel 4 "...For unto you is born this day..., Ain't That a-Rockin', O Come All Ye Faithful, Mosaic Noel 5 "in the city of David a Savior..., Rise Up, Shepherd/Go Tell It on the Mountain, Silent Night, Christmas Triptych, Mosaic Noel 6 "...which is Christ the Lord.", Joy to the World, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel: A Digital Reflection Dale Warland Singers : Christmas Echoes Vol 2 Volume II of the reissue, by popular demand, of a classic pair of Christmas CDs, long out of print, by the renowned Dale Warland Singers. 29 songs: "The Holly and the Ivy," "A Savior from on High," "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree," "On Christmas Night," "Wexford Carol," "Lullay, My Liking," "Sing We Now of Christmas," "Christmas Lullaby," "The Kings and the Shepherds," "There Is No Rose of Such Virtue," "Lullaby, Dear Jesus," "How Far Is It to Bethlehem," "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "A Boy Was Born," "Lo! Merrily on High, Cradle Song, The Ship Carol, A New Year Carol The Haven Quartet : An Acappella Christmas The Haven Quartet's a cappella Christmas includes Bach's 'Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring,' 'Silent Night,' 'Go Tell It On The Mountain' and the 'Wexford Carol,' among others. In other words, whether an Irish traditional, American spiritual or Alfred Burt carol, the common thread is the versatility of this Contemporary Christian group. 'Mary, Did You Know' is revitalized, with a soulful lead by Randy Crenshaw, transforming it into an emotional pop ballad; the resonant 'Noel! Noel!', augmented by a refrain played on recorder, and a lively renaissance country-dance rhythm, is joyful and festive. Each Haven member's voice possesses an attractive brilliance of tone, and the four voices together have an exceptional depth. Songlist: Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Joy to the World, Mary, Did You Know?, Noel! Noel!, Wexford Carol, Silent Night, Little Drummer Boy, All on a Christmas Morning, Do You Hear What I Hear?, On Come, O Come, Emmanuel, Lo, How a Rose, What Are the Signs?, Go, Tell It on the Mountain Libera : Christmas Carols With Libera Boys from South London with 65 million views on YouTube make up the choral group Libera and are normal kids aged 7 to 16 years. The music they produce is truly extraordinary. In addition to their annual tour to America, Libera appearances include The Today Show, Tonight Show, PBS, NBC, Kennedy Center Honors, Yankee Stadium Papal Mass and many more. Their new album 'Christmas Carols With Libera' is available on CD plus digital formats. Taking on the mellow and the more upbeat songs in this collection, the boys of Libera had great fun. The likes of 'Ding Dong Merrily On High' require real precision, as well as purity. Many of the tracks were recorded during a group 'retreat' to a rehearsal space in an old school, this allowed a true live feel to the process. The boy who took the lead vocal on 'The Snowman' had just turned 9 years old, whilst the introductions to the French 'Noel Nouvelet' and the Irish 'Wexford Carol' are both handled by native French and Gaelic speakers, Libera is as polyglot as ever. The distinctive sound of Libera has travelled the world in the last few years. The group's albums have topped both mainstream and classical charts in many countries, and their recordings hold their place in top 10s alongside major artists. Libera's unique sound has endeared the group to fans all over the world, particularly in the USA, the UK, the Philippines, South Korea and Japan, where their CDs top the mainstream and classical charts and where they pack concert halls appearing in their trademark flowing white robes on imaginatively lit stages. Luther College Nordic Choir : Christmas at Luther 2009 Once again Iowa's Luther College's Department of Music has called upon its renowned Nordic Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Cantorei, Christmas Brass and Percussion Ensemble, Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Aurora, Norsemen and Luther Ringers to create the magnificent 4-day musical story of Christmas, "Christmas at Luther 2009, Joy to the World." These combined music ensembles are joined by the audience on the opening cut, "Processional: Joy to the World," and on the next to last cut, "Silent Night" (with narration). There are other traditional carols such as "Joy, Joy, Joy," "Wexford Carol," "Angels We Have Heard on High" and "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel;" classical songs like Felix Mendelssohn's "Thanks Be to God" and Guy Forbes' "O Magnum Mysterium," and pieces by contemporary composers, Quittez, pasteurs" and "Gloria" by John Rutter, "There is No Rose" by Rene Clausen, "Nowel" by Randall Thompson, Jackson Berkey's "Gloria in Excelsis Deo," and F. Melius Christiansen's lovely "Praise to the Lord." There is an organ solo of Claude Balbastre's "Ou s'en vont ces gais bergers," and "Agincourt Song" by the wonderful Symphony Orchestra. In terms of pure musical magnificence, celebration, wonder and beauty, there really is nothing that compares with "Christmas at Luther!" Songlist: Joy to the World, Eventide, Thanks Be To God, Narration, Joy, Joy, Joy, There is No Rose, Nowel, Angels We Have Heard on High, Wexford Carol, On This Day, Earth Shall Ring, Fanfare, Quittez, pasteurs, O Magnum Mysterium, Fantasia on a Ukranian Carol, Ou s'en vont ces gais bergers, Suo-Gan, Agincourt Song, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, S nami Bog, Gloria In Excelsis Deo!, Praise to the Lord, Silent Night, Gloria Michigan State Children's Choir : A Classic Christmas The MSU Children's Choir program began in 1993 with the founding of the MSU Community Music School. The program now has 145 singers representing 23 different school districts and communities. The Choir has been honored to perform at the 2002 6th World Symposium on Choral Music as the representative of the US, and at numerous conventions of the ACDA. Mary Alice Stollak directs the talented Choir in 12 exquisite (mostly organ accompanied) Christmas carols and a pair of sacred pieces, Bach's sublime "Ave Maria" and "Alleluia." There's some rarely heard French carols, "Manger Carol" and "Oh, Leave Your Sheep," English and Irish traditional carols, "Wexford Carol" and "Sussex Carol," and traditional German, "Still, Still, Still;" in additional to "Joy to the World," "Silent Night" and others. The Choir has a sweet, bright sound that makes "A Classic Christmas" a very special album. Songlist: Joy To The World, Manger Carol, Ave Maria, Wexford Carol, Oh, Leave Your Sheep, Silent Night, Ding Dong! Merrily On High, Alleluia, Sussex Carol, Angels We Have Heard On High, Still, Still, Still, O Come, All Ye Faithful Moira Smiley and VOCO : Rua Our first introduction to Moira's amazing voice and her all-woman band Voco was their surprising and dramatic win at the recent '07 Harmony Sweeps Finals in San Rafael, CA, which was the first time in many years that an all-female group took top honors. They also won for Best Original Song, with "Stand in that River," and got a huge ovation for the original "I Live in California" (unfortunately not included in this collection). "Rua" is a lightly accompanied, wonderful collection of traditional folk songs, including "Stand," which was "written to join the tradition." Some favorites are the touching Vermont folk song "House that Jack Built," the Irish song and reel "Hawk & Crow/Monaghan Twig," the deeply-felt song against the idea of Eye for an Eye, "A Man was Born," (we believe to be a group original, but the liner notes are sparse), "Charlie Piggot's/Sporting Pitchfork," a hornpipe and jig accompanied by the "flying feet of Moira's friend, Maire Clerkin." The much-loved Irish carol "Queen Jane," another original, "Grey Shore," a "love-across-the-waters song inspired by all the extraordinary old ones," northern song "Maid of Culmore," "Darkest Midnight," a Wexford carol with new text, and "Parting Glass" a lovely old parting song given some new "Inuit and North African-inspired sounds." An amazing collection by Moira and her group, rising stars who we were privileged to hear at their stunning Finals win! Songlist: House That Jack Built, HAwk And Crow Monaghan Twig, Donal Og, Stand In That River, A Man Was Born, Charlie Piggot's Sporting Pitchfork, Wexford Carol, Katie Cruel, Queen Jane, Grey Shore, Maid Of Culmore, Darkest Midnight, Parting Glass Musaic : Peace Be To You We had the pleasure recently of experiencing a ten-minute set by Bay Area 8-man a cappella ensemble Musaic at the Harmony Sweeps Bay Area Regional in San Francisco and are happy to hear more of their tight, joyous harmonies in this Christmas collection, "Christmas with Musaic." 17 songs, and our favorites include deeply spiritual songs like Handl's "O Magnum Mysterium," Paul Manz' "E'en So Lord Jesus, Quickly Come," Burt Hudson's lovely "Some Children See Him," Rene Clausen's "Set Me A Seal" and the haunting 13th century plainsong "Of the Father's Love Begotten;" as well as carols like "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Jingle Bells," "Christmas Song," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "Winter Wonderland," "Go Frosty Go," "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," the traditional English drinking song "Landlord Fill the Flowing Bowl" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." With music that flows steadily, the utterly beautiful Irish melody is adorned with simple and unobtrusive harmonies that enhance the true essence of the song as it unfolds through multiple verses in this setting for a cappella mixed voices.
Arranger: Philip Stopford
Setting two verses of the Irish traditional carol, Wilberg's version opens simply with unaccompanied unison men, before the piano creeps in gently. Upper voices take over and an imitative section leads to a more dramatic, thicker-textured section. The carol melody's slightly haunting, modal qualities are complemented by colourful harmonic touches, and a final statement of the melody in the piano brings the piece to a calm close.
Composer: Mack Wilberg
