For 28 years Ken served as the Director of Choirs and Fine Arts Chairman at John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham. The choirs at John Carroll consistently received highest ratings in district, state and national festivals under his leadership. After retiring from teaching high school in 2005, Ken served for six years as the full-time Music Minister and Composer in Residence at Mountain Brook Baptist Church, also in Birmingham. As of the summer of 2011, after serving as the part-time Music Director for 33 years, Ken now serves as the first full-time Music Director and Resident Composer for the Birmingham Boys Choir - ken@birminghamboyschoir.com. Under his leadership the Choir has toured extensively throughout Costa Rica, Europe, Japan, and Canada and has sung for OAKE, MENC and ACDA State, Division and National conventions. |

Ken Berg : Solfege Suite Vol 1 for 2-parts The first Solfege Suite consists of three pieces of contrasting styles: March, Bolero, and Gallop. The names give away the character, but the truly fabulous part is that the text is all solfege. Singers learn about musical names, intervals and solfege, while singing programmable music written for the 2006 ACDA Young Voices Boys Choir, directors have been begging for the music's release since its premiere. Here is a spirited New England folk song arrangement that dates from the colonial era that will have lots of appeal for younger treble choirs and boys' ensembles. When Ken Berg's first Solfege Suite for 2-part voices appeared a few years ago, the response was unprecedented. Now the first set of three songs (Galop, March and Bolero) has been revoiced for SAB (middle school) choir and offers the same opportunities for learning the do-re-mi's that doubles as a concert piece.
As with most of the other Solfege Suite selections, this piece can be sung entirely in unison by following the melody voice throughout. The divisi in the melody lines are either in octaves or very simple 3rds. The harmony voice, while really cool, is entirely optional. Directors may choose to use them with a section of voices or an ensemble of voices, or not use them at all.

Beginning in E minor with treble voices in an unadorned unison the voices soon break into parts, eventually opening into 4 parts.
