"Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" (or simply "Motherless Child") is a traditional Negro spiritual. It dates back to the era of slavery in the United States. An early performance of the song dates back to the 1870s by the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Commonly heard during the Civil rights movement in the United States,[3] it has many variations and has been recorded widely.
The song is an expression of pain and despair as it conveys the hopelessness of a child who has been torn from her or his parents. Under one interpretation, the repetition of the word "sometimes" offers a measure of hope, as it suggests that at least "sometimes" the singer does not feel like a motherless child.
Commissioned by The Westminster Chorus, Justin Miller, Director, for the 2019 ACDA National Conference, Richard Burchard has given us an arrangement for men's choir that is rich and moving. Interweaving lines are classic to Richard's compositional style, and within this spiritual they add intensity and reverence. For festival or concert use.

Each selection can be performed alone, or the collection can be performed as a whole to showcase the rich heritage of the spiritual. Songlist: Deep River, Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit, I Got a Robe, Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho, Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, Steal Away, When the Saints Go Marching In K. Scott Warren : Three Spirituals This lively setting of 'Ain'-a That Good News' is perfect for all choirs looking to energize any church service or concert. A chromatic modulation jump starts each new verse, as the energy and excitement is ratcheted up a notch. The canon in the penultimate verse adds variety to the otherwise homophonic texture, and the music finishes brightly with volume and excitement. Warren rejuvenates 'Go Tell it on the Mountain' by skilfully varying the metre between 7/8 and 6/8 in the refrain and presenting each verse differently. This clever arrangement is perfectly suited for concerts and church services alike. In the haunting and plaintive setting of 'Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,' Warren creatively evokes a stark tone of loneliness and despair with descending chromatic inner voices in the opening. What follows is a rich, reflective harmonic texture filled with chromatic surprises. Songlist: Ain't That Good News, Go, Tell it on the Mountain, Sometimes I feel like a motherless child Kari Ala-Pollanen : Negro Spirituals for SA Chorus Finnish choral conductor and composer Kari Ala-Pollanen is the director of the acclaimed Tapiola Choir in Finland and is highly regarded thruout Europe. "Wade in the Watah" borrows from another spiritual, Done Made My Vow, and references the great Harriet Tubman as freedom's guide. The incredible "train effects" are amazing. The broad range of this piece, which occasionally divides into six-part treble, covers the full spectrum from low D to high B! A most impressive entry for contest, festival, or worship. Wade in the Watah will leave listeners in awe! Energetic and electric, this dynamic arrangement of the familiar spiritual, "This Little Light of Mine", will become a favorite of singers and audiences, alike. Tight harmonies and playful syncopation make this piece so much fun, it seems effortless. Altos will love their moment in the spotlight with instructions such as "chesty and raucous," and each vocal part gets its own time to shine. A great concert, contest, or festival selection. He has been conducting groups and church choirs for most of his adult life, and has dedicated himself to upholding a tradition of choral excellence as Founder/Director of the McNeil Jubilee Singers in 1968. Since then the Singers have earned international acclaim for their vast repertoire of African-American folk music, focusing on the rich genre known as Negro Spirituals as well as gospel, secular folk songs, calypsos and other African-Caribbean and African vocal forms. Their repertory also consists of concert works by distinguished African-American composers and arrangers along with Classical Opera, Sacred Music and Musical Theater. The 15 selections in "Best of Jubilee" draw on the best performances of one of the most honored choral ensembles. It's understandably hard to pick favorites, but the South African freedom song "Siyahamba'ekukhanuen'kwenkhos" (We are marching in the light of God), "Glory, Glory Hallelujah," "Open the Window, Noah," "Hallelujah! (Been Down Into The Sea)," "Oh, Mary Don't You Weep," "Oh Make Me Holy," "All My Trials," "Walk Together Children" and "Rocka My Soul" are particularly fine. Inspirational and moving songs, every one the best of the best! Songlist: Siyahamba'ekukhanyet'kwenkhos, Dry Bones, Glory, Glory Hallelujah, Open The Window Noah, He's Got The Whole World In His Hands, Hallelujah! John Rutter has written vivid new arrangements of seven well-loved American spirituals for choir, with soloist Melanie and the BBC Concert Orchestra joining with the Cambridge Singers for this world premiere recording. Another notable 'first' is jazz legend George Shearing's captivating new cycle of Shakespeare settings, Songs and Sonnets. Those who associate George Shearing with instrumental jazz (and of course with his immortal Lullaby of Birdland) will be astonished and delighted at the youthful charm and skillful word-setting of this 81-year old master's choral writing. The final touch of sparkle is added by Proms favorite Wayne Marshall's piano, with Malcolm Creese on bass. To complete the album, John Rutter's own Birthday Madrigals - written in 1995 to celebrate George Shearing's 75th birthday - also receives their premiere recording. There are 20 songs here, mostly lightly accompanied by accompanist and arranger Michael Neaum. Some of our favorites are "Look to this Day," "La Regata," "O Won't You Sit Down?," "Goin' Up-a-Yonder;" "Pretty Little Horses," "And So It Goes," "Miss You Nights" and "The Rose." Collegium Regale, which is composed of the choral scholars from the King's College Choir, explores the traditional songs of Britain, America, France and Hungary. Many of these familiar tunes, such as "Molly Malone" and "Shenandoah" were arranged by Keith Roberts who serves as the group's artistic consultant. The spirituals arranged by Robert Rice stray from the traditional style. His versions lean toward the lighter sounds of doo-wop and barbershop, particularly in "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child." Though, all pieces and especially the solos are sung beautifully. Songlist: Dashing Away With The Smoothing Iron, Brigg Fair, Botany Bay, Il est ne le divin enfant, Myfanwy, The turtle dove, Londonderry air, Sometimes I feel like a motherless child, Nobody knows the trouble I seen, De gospel train, My sweetheart's like Venus, Ca' the yowes, Molly Malone, O Waly Waly, Ye banks and braes, Song of the Volga Boatmen, Shenandoah, Joshua, Steal Away, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot Deep River Boys : The Early Years 1937-50 Acrobat has a highly interesting catalogue of gospel, doowop and vocal group recordings, which already includes a Deep River Boys collection from their later era during the 1950s when they recorded for EMI in the UK. Picking favorites is not easy, there are excellent solos on "Let Me Fly ," "Dere's No Hidin' Place," "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel " and "City Called Heaven." We learned some of these songs in elementary school, and remember being touched by their poignancy, at the same time appalled to learn of the bloody slaughter. Soldiers on both sides marched off to songs like "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Dixie" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," but it's the songs like "He's Gone Away," "Tenting On The Old Camp Ground," "Aura Lee," "Lorena," "Kathleen Mavourneen," "Sweet Evelina," "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" and the sadly unincluded "One Vacant Chair" that tell the real, heartbreaking story of the war. We're then cheered up, however, by 9 Stephen Foster "pop" tunes, the joyous "Ring De Banjo," "Oh! Susanna," "The Glendy Burk," "Beautiful Dreamer," "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair," "Nellie Bly" and others. A powerful collection from the magnificent MTC. Songlist: Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, Aura Lee, The Bonnie Blue Flag, He's Gone Away, The Battle Cry of Freedom, Lorena, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Tenting on the Old Camp Ground, Sweet Evelina, I Wish I Was In Dixie, Kathleen Mavourneen, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, When Johnny Comes Marching Home Moses Hogan Singers : Deep River From the library of Moses Hogan is Deep River, featuring 18 songs: 10 Songs are solo arrangements and 8 songs are never before recorded choral arrangements. The Solos are available in the corresponding Deep River Songbook for both High and Low voice, and charts are available for the choral pieces. Soloists are Henrietta Davis/Soprano, Robert Sims/Baritone, and Alfred Walker/Bass with Moses Hogan accompanying on piano. Deep River comes highly recommended! Songlist: Deep River, Hear My Prayer, He Never Said A Mumblin' Word, Ride The Chariot, My Good Lord's Done Been Here, Were You There?, I Want To Be Ready, He's Got the Whole World In His Hands, You Better Min' How You Talk, A Spiritual Reflection, Give Me Jesus, Good News, The Chariot's Coming, Somebody's Knockin' At Yo Door, We Shall Walk Through The Valley In Peace, Let Us Break Bread Together, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, Walk Together Children, Who Built The Ark? Oxford Pro Musica Singers : Deep River 'Feel the Spirit' is a set of seven arrangements of well-known spirituals, first performed in 2001. It is performed on this recording by the acclaimed jazz singer Jacqueline Dankworth in its chamber-ensemble arrangement. Harvey Brough's 'Walled Garden Suite' for soloist, choir and instrumental quartet was written for Dankworth and first performed on the occasion of the opening of the walled garden at Wingfield Arts in Suffolk. Of the two collections by Bob Chilcott on this CD, 'Fragments from his Dish' is a group of five light-hearted part-songs on the themes of food and drink. The programme concludes with 'The Making of the Drum', settings of words by Barbadian poet Edward Kamau Braithwaite, commissioned from Bob Chilcott by OPMS on the occasion of the choir's twentieth anniversary in 1997. It tells the story of the making of a traditional African drum and is heavily influenced by the style of African tribal music. Songlist: Joshua Fit De Battle Of Jericho, Steal Away, I Got A Robe, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit, Deep River, The Argument, Red Running Rue, To Daffodils, On Himself, Grace-The Clean Platter, The Pie, Harvest In My Crift, Christmas 1666, Whines From The Wood, The Skin, The Barrel Of The Drum, The Two Curved Sticks Of The Drummer, The Gong-Gong Pacific Boychoir : That Promised Land The elite Troubadors of Oakland's Pacific Boychoir Academy are joined by Continuum, a group of former boy choristers whose voices have changed, and soloist Jonathon Hampton, to sing this strong collection of 19 African-American spirituals, directed by Kevin Fox. Favorites are "Ain't Got Time to Die," "City Called Heaven," "Precious Lord" and "Wade in the Water," all of which features Hampton's smooth countertenor; "Over Yonder," which features soloist Jacob Wilson; "Deep River," "The Battle of Jericho" and "Hear My Prayer." There is some light accompaniment. The soloists contrast nicely with the Troubadors' sweet, high background vocals, particularly Hampton's rich leads. A special, beautifully performed collection! Songlist: I Open My Mouth, Little David, Play On Your Harp, All My Trials, Take My Mother Home, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, Witness, There Is A Balm In Gilead, Ain't Got Time To Die, Precious Lord, I Stood On The River Of Jordan, Deep River, City Called Heaven, Over Yonder, The Storm Is Passing Over, Wade In The Water, Ain't That Good News, Praise His Holy Name, The Battle Of Jericho, Hear My Prayer The Singers Unlimited : The Complete A Cappella Sessions It doesn't get any better than this! The arrangements of Gene Puerling are simply exquisite and his ability to transform a song to completely new heights is astounding. We carry many thousands of a cappella CDs and this release is, in our opinion, the most essential CD for the collection of any serious fan of a cappella music! Settle was the originator of the Wings over Jordan Choir (WOJC), which on the public scene in the late 1930s, the first full-time professional black choir in America. Proficient and versatile, during the period 1938 to 1949, the choir performed before sold-out, non-segregated audiences in over 40 American states, 5 European countries, Canada and Mexico. In 1937 the choir inaugurated a successful weekly "Negro Hour" on CBS Radio in Cleveland, reaching 40 million listeners. WOJC's segment of spirituals would be followed by the Southernaires Quartet, and then the Golden Gate Quartet. A songbook was published and over 50 recordings came from this program, performances with major symphonic orchestras and an invitation to sing at the White House. Reverend Settle narrates in this rare collection, saying things like "It's not because I'm a coward and afraid to defend myself that I smilingly take the many abuses forced upon me through life. The fact is, I pity and pray for those who despitefully mistreat me. You may wonder about my attitude. Well, the answer is very simple. I am busy trying to get ready to try on my long white robe." Gospel Friend records is releasing this wonderful collection of 25 authentic spirituals, accompanied by fascinating pictures and text in the liner notes (one of our favorites is several members of the group all dressed up in front of their spanking-new tour bus, "Wings Over Jordan" proudly on the front). There are several spirituals we are hearing for the first time, such as "The Old Ark's A-Movering," "My Lord's Gonna Move This Wicked Race," the joyous "I Just Got Over," "Meet You at the Judgement," "Trampin'," "Over My Head" and others. And then there are tunes we've heard many times, such as "Rock My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham," "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel," "Wade in the Water," "Old Ship of Zion" and "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," but it's as if we are hearing them for the first time. "Trying to Get Ready" is a treat on many levels, from beginning to end. Don't miss this one! Adapted from Jay's popular American Folk Songs for Solo Singers, this remarkable new choral arrangement works beautifully. The languid minor-key melody is passed from soloist to choir and part to part, often accompanied by mournful background vocals. Not difficult to perform, but appropriately weighty.
Arranger: Jay Althouse | Composer: Traditional
Simple unison singing is complemented by a jazz-flavored piano accompaniment. Performance Time: Approx. 3:20

Rosephanye Powell released a gripping arrangement for mixed voices in 2004 that has enjoyed steady use. This SSAA arrangement remains true to the unique qualities of the previous voicing - heart-wrenching harmonies and soulful blue notes that mourn gracefully. The inclusion of the two brief West African texts adds years of history and depth to this somber Spiritual. The surprising Picardy ending provides a pleasant reassurance. Medium difficulty.
