Dr. Rosephanye Dunn Powell has been hailed as one of America's premier women composers of choral music. Dr. Powell is commissioned yearly to compose for university choruses, professional, community and church choirs, as well as secondary school choruses. Dr. Powell's works have been conducted and premiered by nationally-renowned choral conductors, including, but not limited to, Anton Armstrong, Philip Brunelle, Bob Chilcott, Rodney Eichenberger, Tom Hall, Albert McNeil, Tim Seelig, Andre Thomas and Judith Willoughby. Her work has been auctioned by Chorus America and her compositions are in great demand at choral festivals around the country, frequently appearing on the regional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, as well as Honor Choir festivals. |

This six-minute piece is in celebration of Dr. Eileen Southern, author of The Music of Black Americans: A History, Dr. Samuel A Floyd, Jr., respected author and founder of the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College, titled his essay Eileen Jackson Southern: Quiet Revolutionary. The composer says, In 'Quiet Revolutionary,' I sought to depict Dr. Southern's delicate state of bliss through jazz harmonies, sparse accompaniment, and simplicity of form, lyrics, dynamics, melody, and rhythms. The piano introduction depicts Dr. Southern quietly at work, unaware of the passage of time. A great honoring the legacy of a Black female scholar and musician.

Commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for their 2012 convention, here is the first major work from the pen of Rosephanye Powell. With text from the Book of Jeremiah, the four movements follow the prophet's feelings of abandonment and redemption by God. Powell combines this ancient text with music that draws simultaneously from the African American musical heritage, as well as the classical music traditions.
This brilliant and exuberant work for mixed voices is ideal for festival and honor choirs or worship settings. The text, based on portions of Psalm 27, is vividly depicted in the music, which is filled with dynamic contrast and rhythmic vitality. A superb opener!
