Known primariily as a band leader and jazz artist, Duke Ellington also had deep roots in the Christian faith. His 1943 cantata Black, Brown and Beige featured this rich and deeply moving song most famously performed and recorded by Mahalia Jackson. These accessible settings for mixed and treble choirs by noted jazz educator Paris Rutherford are ideal for both worship and concert performance. The great American composer, Kirke Mechem has taken this classic folk song of unknown origin and set it for SATB chorus, baritone soloist (playing the part of the poet of this text) and piano or organ with optional string orchestra. This is a theme and variations arrangement and one that will challenge any fine choir without challenging the ears of the listeners. Two songs originally found in the collection Reliquary of English Song, have been edited and arranged to make a wonderful short set for young singers. The first, You Gentlemen of England is a tune dating to the time of Elizabeth I (1533-1603) and is vigorous and lively. The second is The British Grenadiers, a traditional marching song which will allow your young singers a chance to engage themselves physically and sing with the natural energy all directors are trying to harness.
