Even if you already own a version of Mozart's famous "Alleluia," you'll definitely want the quality editing and arranging of this Royal School of Church Music edition in your music library.Ê
Arranger: David Patrick | Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
GIA is the proud US distributor of anthems from the Royal School of Church Music. Harris' "Behold the Tabernacle of God" is a quintessential British anthem of the 20th century. As the text suggests, it is appropriate for any season of festivity.
Composer: William Harris
A choral blessing using the first stanza of this familiar hymn. A gentle piece with solo and choir accompanied throughout with undulating eighths in the organ treble over sustained chords. Mostly pianissimo, rising briefly to fortissimo, and ending ppp. Quite simply, beautiful.Ê
Composer: Philip Wilby
This contemporary carol for Christmas proclaims the message that salvation has come with the birth of an infant king. The opening pages of the composition feature the soprano section, first in unison supported by the organ, followed by the rest of the choir providing an angelic a cappella accompaniment support to the tune. By the ending verse, the men's voices have a few measures with the melody, the altos and soprano divisi providing the angelic soundscape. All voices merge to unison for the final, fading phrase.
Composer: Malcolm Archer
While the title suggests images of a faithful and trusted shepherd, the Pollock text is not a paraphrase of the venerable Psalm 23. This gentle setting for SATB choir and organ relies on dynamics, as well as a cantabile style in sync with the text, for its effect. A well-prepared choir won't mind the relatively independent organ score.Ê
Composer: Grayston Ives
Although arranged for SAB voices and keyboard, this spirited setting of a cherished, 19th-century hymn of confidence and joy in Christ may be sung in unison throughout or by SA voices only. Another easy option for a change in the texture: sing a portion a cappella-say, the first half of the third verse.
Arranger: John Barnard
The Chinese proverb "It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness" comes to mind in this anthem. The text reminds us that the light of Christ continually penetrates the world of darkness and that we are the bearers of that light.
Composer: Richard Shephard
A setting of this famous Wesley text for Easter Sunday. Especially suitable if you suddenly discover half of your choir will be away. It is bold, jubilant, and musically interesting while being mostly unison with some generic two-part division and an SATB a cappella stanza that could be done unison or two-part with accompaniment.
Composer: David Ogden
With this piece, you have a strong arrangement of the congregation-pleasing ST. COLUMBA-sturdy in its composition, but not overly complex, eliminating the need for too much rehearsal time. This one should be in everyone's library!Ê
Arranger: Martin How | Composer: C.V. Stanford
From the Royal School of Church Music comes this single edition that contains two brief anthems for choir and organ. The first is edited by Simon Lindley and is for unison voices. The second is Arthur Hutchings' 2-voiced arrangement of a Mozart hymn, with words of Charles Wesley.
Arranger: Arthur James Bramwell Hutchings | Composer: Jean Francois Lallouette
