Although Rosephanye often selects sacred texts for her music, it is the uniqueness of her writing style that enables it to serve both in worship and concert. Ascribe to the Lord has been one of her most popular compositions and this arrangement for men's voices by her husband, William, will spread its popularity even further. A driving accompaniment and roaring musical lines bring a fresh wind to Psalm 29:1-4.

African-American poet Countee Cullen is the text source Rosephanye has chosen to set to music and one understands why when the words are read. The title is used as a litany response, Christ is born today to other words that lift up the downtrodden in stark words without apology. Christ must and will come to his own is how it ends. Rosephanye's music captures a flavor that respects the difficulties of her ethnic heritage. It is a wonderful and powerful statement in so many ways.

The Cry of Jeremiah, a four movement work for choir and organ commissioned by the American Guild of Organists, was a smashing success at its premiere in 2012. Hallelujah is the final movement from the work which works equally well with piano. Rosephanye's skill at merging the modern day African-American spiritual with traditional choral music is uncanny and very rewarding to sing.

Rosephanye Powell has created a new spiritual for Christmas that sounds like we have been singing it for years. The basic melody is carried by a small group or solo voice and the choral parts serve as the accompaniment and sometimes as a response to the melody. The pace is quick and energetic and, as always, Rosephanye's rhythms are a joy to sing.

Commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for their 2012 convention, here is the first major work from the pen of Rosephanye Powell. With text from the Book of Jeremiah, the four movements follow the prophet's feelings of abandonment and redemption by God.
