Poet Angelina Weld Grimke was an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Here she describes the dawning of a new day, a text captured by the composer in colorful and descriptive writing. Scored for marimba (optional piano) and treble voices, this is a beautiful example of word painting as the choir sings, it is good to love, it is good to be alive.
Composer: Andrea Ramsey
These are the musical ravings of a slightly deranged person reminding themselves to trust the process--after all, what good is a life without surprises? There is an unrelenting rhythm, to be sure, but the accents are off kilter, the piano in clusters, and sometimes the tenors and sopranos sing two clashing melody lines silultaneously, all at a tempo that could easily become a runaway train.
Composer: Jennifer Lucy Cook
The line between time's reality and its invention is blurry. In this new piece, the lyrics disappear and phrases take on new meaning. We lose time when we try to keep it; we spend time as we try to save it. Time insists upon eluding us; we can only notice the fact that time has been winking at us all along. This music is a way of winking back.

The beautiful song from Richard Strauss' first collection of published songs is here skillfully arranged for women's voices. The German Lied, elevated in the 19th century by Schubert, was taken to new heights by Strauss in the early 20th century. Here the women sing of their longing for the return of a deceased love.
Arranger: Brandon Williams | Composer: Richard Strauss
The text for Alterations was written by a former junior high student of the composer. It is optimistic and hopeful and the music reflects this beautifully. It is syncopated and dance-like and full of joy.

Nineteenth century composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828) wrote more than 600 lieder or songs--vocal songs accompanied by piano. He raised this to an art form by equalizing the importance of the music and poetry and expanding the role of the piano accompaniment. In this composition, take special notice of the text painting depicted by harmonic shifts and descriptive music.
Arranger: Brandon Williams | Composer: Franz Schubert
Commissioned for the 2016 Eastern Division ACDA, this Christina Rossetti poem is a wonderful teaching piece. The melodic line in the opening section is constructed to evoke feelings of beauty, loss and remembrance. A middle section paints a picture of grief, reality, and the feeling of life spinning out of control. After the climax of this middle section, there is a return to a sense of calm, symbolizing that as time passes, we are able to come to terms with loss.
Composer: Tom Shelton Jr.

This thrilling new arrangement by twin brothers Matt and Adam Podd was an internet sensation shortly after we were all quarantined due to the Corona Virus. Drawing on friendships in the New York City Broadway, church and opera worlds, more than 120 world class singers and players came together to create the virtual choir and orchestra. In the final chorus, the arrangers very cleverly turn the iconic phrase How can I keep from singing? into Keep Singing. In this edition, the editor maintains accuracy of pitches and durations seen in the original manuscript. Clefs are updated to modern usage in all parts. And the original figured bass has been fully realized. Singers will enjoy singing this polyphony and developing their vocal independence.

This poignant text by famed Irish poet Thomas Moore is filled with nostalgia and inherent melody. The poet, lost in thought in the middle of the night, wrestles with past memories of boyhood whilst contemplating his journey to the present--friendships and loneliness, smiles and tears. Even as the poet grapples with sadness of former days gone by, the feeling of hope remains when voices unite in song, reminding us that we are never alone on our journey.
Composer: Kevin T. Padworski
