Tis song is an ancient chant of Eucharistic devotion based on words from Habakkuk 2:20, "Let all the earth keep silence before him" . The original was composed in Greek as a Cherubic Hymn for the Offertory of the Divine Liturgy of St James; it probably antedates the rest of the liturgy and goes back at least to AD 275, with local churches adopting arrangements in Syriac. In modern times, the Ralph Vaughan Williams arrangement of a translation from the Greek by Gerard Moultrie to the tune of "Picardy", a French medieval folk melody, popularized the hymn among other Christian congregations.
The echoes of ancient worshippers are heard in this time-honored text that conveys the mystery and majesty of our faith. A fully engaged choir will luxuriate in the harmonies and choral textures while the orchestral accompaniment provides splendid options for larger scale performances. Score and Parts (fl/pic, ob, cl, bn, tpt 1-3, hn, tbn 1-2, tbn3/tba, perc 1-3, hp, vn 1-2, va, vc, db) available as a digital download.

This auditioned ensemble features 65 young women ages 12 to 21. No strangers to competitions, founding directors John Barron and Brenda Zadorsky have led them to wins in 11 national and 4 international competitions. "Garden" is a lightly-accompanied, varied collection of 20 songs-some favorites are E. Elgar's "The Snow," J. Brahms' "Lullaby," Handel's "No, divoi non vo fidarmi," D. Gawthrop's "Mary Speaks," E. Daley's lovely "Each Child," R. Thompson's "Choose Something Like a Star," A. Bevan's "Ave Maria," C. Ives' "Serenity," R. Thompson's "A Girl's Garden," J. Mantyjarvi's surprising, eclectic "Pseudo-Yoik Lite" the joyous, soaring "Paruparong Bukid" and Harold Arlen's "Over the Rainbow." Some of these pieces are dissonant and difficult to perform, but these young women make it sound easy. If you'd like a tasty feast of tunes by one of the best young women's ensembles on the planet, the aptly-named "Garden of Delights" is for you! Songlist: The Snow - Elgar, Song Of The Angels - Sirett, Lullaby - Brahms, No Di Voi Non Vo Fidarmi - Handel, I Thank You God - Walker, Mi'Kmaq Honour Song - Adams, Mary Speaks - Gawthrop, Each Child - Daley, Choose Something Like A Star - Thompson, Noel Des Enfants Qui Non Plus Des Maisons - Debussy, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, Ave Maria - Bevan, Serenity - Ives, Cloths Of Heaven - Daley, A Girl's Garden - Thompson, Poi E, Pseudo-Yoik Lite, Paruparong Bukid, Over The Rainbow, Praise His Holy Name - Hampton Cambridge Singers : Sing, Ye Heavens Directed by John Rutter, this recording takes as its grand objective a collection of "hymns for all time." Drawn from the Anglican tradition without apology, many of these 21 compositions are accompanied, by anything from a single harp to the London Sinfonia Brass, though there are some a cappella chants. There is nothing stiff or abstract about these arrangements, however. The Cambridge mixed ensemble breathes a vitality into each note, and folk hymns such as "Be Thou My Vision" couldn't be lovelier. Those listeners who grew up singing these hymns in church will be especially fond of "Sing, Ye Heavens," but anyone can enjoy the purity of the sound of the Cambridge Singers. John Rutter directs the 29-strong Cambridge Singers in a cappella renditions of some of the most beautiful works from this body, divided into five groups. In the first group, "The Coming of Christ," we have pieces by E.C. Bairstow, da Palestrina and Handl, as well as a Sarum chant, "Veni, Redemptor gentium." In the second group, "Words of Christ," we find pieces by Heinrich Schutz, P.I. Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. In the third group, "The Passion of Christ," we have works by Anton Bruckner, da Palestrina, T.L. de Victoria, Pablo Casals and Antonio Lotti. In the fourth group, "Resurrection and Ascension," there are pieces by Peter Phillips, da Palestrina and William Bird. And in the fifth group, "Christ in the Eucharist," we have works by T.L. de Victoria, Richard Dering, Samuel Barber, Olivier Messiaen and a lovely Gregorian chant, "Pange Lingua." The 24-page liner notes contain all words and translations. Let us find an imaginary place in the cathedral and hear the soaring praises to the remarkable man for whom it was built! Recorded by Tom Jung for his widely respected label, DMP Records, the CD beautifully combines the clarity of sound for which Jung is known with the rich acoustic of this collegiate gothic structure. The realism and immediacy of the performance is documented in a way which truly brings these classic choral pieces to life. Songlist: Beati quorum via, O Vos Omnes, Ubi Caritas, Justorum Animae, Coelos Ascendit Hodie, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, O Sacrum Convivium, Ave Verum Corpus, Hail Gladdening Light, Ave Maria, Pater Noster, Crucifixus, O Sacrum Convivium Great Northern Union Chorus : Bound For Glory Twin-Cities-based Great Northern Union, directed since 2002 by Peter Benson, is one of the midwest's most versatile choral groups. Surrounded by musical excellence, the group has a broad repertoire and a beautiful sound, and they add visual presentation to complete the package. "Bound for Glory" is "Gnu's" fourth recording, a special selection of sacred works. 11 songs, "Great Day," Thomas Tallis' "If Ye Love Me," "In This Very Room," "Swing Low/Swing Down Chariot," "God is My Rock," "Nearer My God to Thee/I Need Thee Every Hour," "When I Lift Up My Head," "This Train/When the Saints Go Marching In" and special bonus cut, Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria" are particularly nice. An inspirational, beautifully arranged and sung collection from the talented, dynamic Great Northern Union Chorus Songlist: Great Day, If Ye Love Me, In This Very Room, Run, Run, Run, Swing Low / Swing Down Chariot, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, God Is My Rock, Nearer My God To Thee / I Need Thee Every Hour, When I Lift Up My Head, This Train / When The Saints Go Marching In, Ave Maria Holst Singers : Ikon II In 1997, the Holst Singers and Stephen Layton produced a disc that immediately became a cult classic and a best-seller. 'Ikon', a selection of great Russian choral music from the 19th century, dazzled with its grand, opulent beauty. Now the same forces return with Ikon II. Many of the works recorded here are by composers whose names will not be familiar - but the extraordinary quality of the music is unmistakable and immediately enthralling. This recording centres on music produced by a group of composers linked to the Moscow Synodal School of Church Singing, famous for its choir (comprising men and boys) at the beginning of the twentieth century. These composers made, up to the time of the momentous events of 1917, a significant contribution to the future of Russian choral music, one that, while never forgotten in Russia, is now also coming to be appreciated in the West. That their work did not emerge from a vacuum is made evident here by the inclusion of music by earlier composers: Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), Mili Balakirev (1837-1910) and Cesar Cui (1835-1918). Songlist: Our Father, Salvation is created, Of thy mystical supper, Let my prayer arise, Let thy good spirit, Bless the Lord, O my soul, The Cherubic Hymn, Come, let us worship, Come, let us worship, We hymn thee, Rejoice, O Virgin, Bless the Lord, O my sold, Our Father, Rejoice, O Virgin, We hymn thee, Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, Let all mortal flesh keep silence, We have no other help, All of creation rejoices in you, The Thrice-Holy Masters Of Harmony : Caroling, Caroling This multiple gold-medal award winning chorus is consistently delightful. Directed by Dr. Greg Lyne, their sound is immense, yet compact. With marvelous adaptations of favorites such as "Joy To The World" (where the use of dynamics, stepwise motion and rhythmic variation between voice-parts creates a surprising excitement), or the "Christmas Waltz Medley" (featuring "My Favorite Things"), the Masters of Harmony are never predictable. The "Gift Carol," a Catalonian folk carol with a delicate and exquisitely harmonized melody in 3/4, is a highlight. Songlist: Caroling, Caroling, Joy to the World World-Adeste Fidelis, Gift Carol, O Holy Night, Christmas Waltz Medley, Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, We Want to Wish You a Merry Christmas, Feast of Lights, Ring de Christmas Bells, Carol of the Bells, The Little Drummer Boy, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, The Christmas Song, Coventry Carol, Silver Bells, Silent Night, Auld Lang Syne Nightlife : Basin St Blues Let us have Dr. Greg Lyne tell you about the voices of Nightlife. "Brett (Littlefield) possesses one of the most resonant, rich bass voices you're ever going to hear, which contributes to the depth so characteristic of the Nightlife sound. Jeff's (Baker) voice brings the glue and dignity to the composite sound that all outstanding quartets seek. John's (Sasine) voice is unusually free and agile, which is also the key to the quartet's individually of expression. Finally, it is the color and presence found in Rob's tenor voice that contributes the sheen to this foursome's distinctive sound." True, true. Now listen to "Creole Cutie," "Route 66," "Beautiful Dreamer" (beautiful!), "Smile" and another eleven songs. Celebrate their Championship with them! Songlist: 'Cross the Mason-Dixon Line, Creole Cutie, Stars Fell on Alabama, Route 66, Beautiful Dreamer, It Must Be That Look in Her Eyes/Them There Eyes Medley, It Never Occured to Me, Rhythm Medley, You're As Welcome As the Flowers in May, This Is My Lucky Day/Luck Be A Lady Tonight Medley, Basin Street Blues, I Love You For Sentimental Reasons, Sailin' Away on the Henry Clay, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, Smile UCLA Madrigal Singers : Hark, How The Bells The UCLA Madrigal Singers, the 22 member mixed-voice premiere chamber choir led by director/arranger Donn Weiss, brings us this "best-of" holiday album, which represents nearly 25 years of audience favorites, the best-loved Christmas songs heard at Royce Hall and at their traditional Twelfth Night concerts. We of course enjoy standards like "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Deck the Hall," "O Holy Night" and "Stille Nacht," but we particularly like more obscure music like Catherine Bennett's "Christ Child Carol," Benjamin Britten's "Christ Child Carol," the Scottish Carol "Balloo Lammy," Herbert Howells' "A Spotless Rose," the Spanish "Carol of the Birds," Daniel Pinkham's "Come Love We God," the Austrian carol "Still, Still, Still," and the Puerto Rican folksong "De Tierra Legana Venimos." The full, rich sound of the Singers makes "Bells" ring out as a very special and varied Christmas collection. Occasional light accompaniment. Songlist: Angels We Have Heard on High, Deck the Hall, Christ Child Carol, A Boy Was Born, Baloo Lammy, Flemish Carol, A Spotless Rose, Joy to the World, In the Bleak Midwinter, Carol of the Birds, Come, Love We God, Still, Still, Still, Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella, Carol of the Bells, De Tierra Lejana Venimos, O Holy Night, Love Came Down at Christmas, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, Pat-a-pan, A Christmas, Estampie Natalis, Stille Nacht |

Scored for voices with handbells and optional percussion, this setting of the traditional French carol opens mysteriously, reflecting the awe of the first verse: "Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand." As voices and bells are added, the work closes with chorusing alleluias. This work makes an exceptional processional or antiphonal anthem, heightening the drama of your Advent services.

This arrangement of the ethereal tune PICARDY provides a fresh treatment for contemporary ensembles with guitar- and piano-based bands.
