"Box" is the fourth excellent CD by all-male Chicago quartet Ac Rock (pronounced Ak-Rock), who are into a cappella Rock n' Roll, and just keep getting better at singing and arranging it! Paul, JD, Mark & Chris share solos on these 14 songs (actually 18, considering the final cut, "Best of Doo-Wop" includes "Duke of Earl," "The Book of Love," "Get A Job" and the Harmony Sweeps anthem "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight"). Just listen to cut #9, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (before a live audience at an elementary school in Wilmington, IL) if you want to see how much these guys (a) love their work, and (b) have big fun in concert. Blue Jupiter : Live In New York   

Edgy pop-funk Blue Jupiter, who won Audience Favorite and Best Arrangement at the Washington DC and NYC Harmony Sweeps Regionals 2 years in a row and recently won Oreo's "Milk's Favorite Jingle" contest, which now is all over the radio, brings us their 3rd CD-the first two the critically acclaimed "Ear Candy" and "Scattered Flurries." "Live" has "no tricks, no tracks, just four mouths and four mics," all 12 cuts arranged, performed and recorded by these 4 talented guys in November 2005 in New York City. Smoky Robinson's "Get Ready," Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time," the Turtles' reborn bubblegum hit "Happy Together," a bluesy, funky cover of "Flip, Flop & Fly," the wonderful "Mr. Pinstripe Suit," Carlos Santana's classic "Smooth" and "Wrapped Up In You" from Ear Candy, the vocal percussion drum solo on "Steal My Kisses" and the driving final cut "All The Small Things" are favorites. Cluster : Cement   

Mixed-voice (3 men, 2 women) Italian a cappella jazz ensemble Cluster lets us know from the first sweetly dissonant, elegantly vocal percussioned notes of John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" that we're in for a treat. Cluster's website is a delightful mystery, all in Italian, but all but one of the 13 tunes (the brooding "Blinker bla") is in English, even the title tune, an original by group tenor Nicola Nastos. Jazzy covers of American pop and R&B songs like Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are," a masterful arrangement of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds," Stevie Wonder's "Creepin'," the absolute finest arrangement of The Turtles' bubblegum hit "Happy Together" we've ever heard, and the Motown hit "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" are some favorites. Cluster are poised, confident risk-takers who are fast making their marks in the competitive European jazz/a cappella world. And "cement" is one of the best, most impressive debut CDs we've heard in years. Now it's time to put on the good headphones, pour a glass of the $20 Sauvignon Blanc, cue it up again and truly savor this masterpiece!

FWI describes itself as "a refreshingly quirky yet musically substantive eight-person San Francisco-based a cappella ensemble known for its versatility and unpredictability." Founded in 1996, this 4-man, 4-woman ensemble gave a very impressive performance at the 2005 Bay Area Regional, and prides itself in singing something for everyone. These 17 cuts are clear evidence of this: a wonderfully harmonic cover of CSN&Y's "CarryOn/Questions" medley, Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever," Lennon/McCartney's "Can't Buy Me Love" performed as a Renaissance madrigal, and the heart-tugging WWII anthem " I'll Be Seeing You" are part of a musical Whitman's Sampler that continually delights and surprises. k.d. lang's hit "Constant Cravings," Z. Randall Stroope's lovely "Amor de mi Alma," J.S. Bach's hilarious "Traffic Fugue" (with lyrics added, with no disrespect, by C. Seagrave); Randy Weeks' country tune "Can't Let Go," and the silly "Plastic Jesus," Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," and The Arachnid Suite: "The Spider" and " The Spider in the Bath" are favorites. And how worthy they are is clearly demonstrated on this fine recording as the ladies are in top form as they sing some classic barbershop songs along with some vintage jazz gems. Made up of members of the Melodeers and the Choral-Aires Sweet Adeline choruses the quartet members Lynda, Joan, Heather and Cori fine individual voices blend in great harmony with a spirit that shows why we love female barbershop singing so much. This recording should be in all fans collections.

Todd Wilson earned six International Chorus Championships with The Vocal Majority, and one International Quartet Gold Medal singing with Acoustix. Since then he has conducted six different choral ensembles across the country, leading the 90-voice Houston Tidelanders to two BHS top ten finishes. He is one of the founders of Nashville Singers, and is Director of Music (in addition to wearing several other hats) for the 14-man group. "The Journey Begins" is a six-song debut recording for the NS, featuring The Turtles' "Happy Together," the traditional folk tune "Shenandoah," the Dean Martin trademark hit "That's Amore" (sung by the Amore 4, a Barbershop Quartet within the Singers) Token's Doo-Wop standard "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "The Impossible Dream" from "Man of La Mancha." Masterful Mr. Wilson knows what he's doing, and "The Journey Begins" sounds great. We'll be expecting big things from the talented Nashville Singers!

1982 was a banner year for Northbrook, IL, as it was the year a Barbershop legend, The New Tradition Chorus, was founded, directed by Jay Giallombardo. Varying in size from 95 to 138 men, TNTC won their first SPEBSQSA medal in 1987, which began a remarkable streak of success in international chorus competition. They medaled every year, including a record 5 Silver medals in a row, until they finally grabbed the Gold in 2001! Classic Nylons! Here we have the archetypical fabulous vocal harmony accompanied by rhythm tracks. As Happy Together was released in 1987 it can be said to be in the prime of the early Nylons. Though the best known tunes from this recording are "Happy Together" and "Kiss Him Goodbye," this reviewer finds "It's What They Call Magic," "This Island Earth" and the soaring falsetto on "Grown Man Cry" particularly memorable though perhaps less AM Radio worthy. Additional notable arrangements are "Chain Gang" and "A Touch Of Your Hand."

The Nylons : Best of   

In 1993 Attic Records and Windham Hill Records put out their first collection, entitled Best Of..., which, like the later compilation Perfect Fit is a fine survey of the four Nylons whom most consider the originals, Marc Connors, Paul Cooper, Arnold Robinson and Claude Morrison. Many of the signature tunes are found on both releases but uniquely on Best Of... are "That Kind Of Man," "Up The Ladder To The Roof," "Please," "Stepping Stone," "Bop Till You Drop," "Combat Zone," "Wildfire" and "The Stars Are Ours."

A product of Sweet Adelines' reaching out to young women singers, Sacramento, CA-based Razzcals first began singing together in 1995, in their teens and early 20s. In Sweet Adelines international competition they immediately began making their mark, placing 21st, 15th, 7th, 4th (four times in a row), 2nd and 4th. "Now Appearing," the group's second, is a polished, entertaining collection of 12 songs: "When the Midnight Choo-Choo Leaves for Alabam'," "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now," "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Shangri La," "Love Medley," "Jenny Rebecca," "There Goes My Heart," "The Boy From Ipanema" and the saucy "Hey, Good Lookin'" are particular favorites. This contemporary/jazz quartet is from Florida, where they are part of the Disney entertainment complex (performing as "Four For A Dollar"). With arrangements by members Doug Teel and Marshall Webb, their material is proven Top 40 radio fare such as "Fly Like An Eagle," "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" and "Turn Your Love Around," with a couple of originals in like vein. That said, the highlight of this CD is Gene Puerling's "Georgia On My Mind," the definitive arrangement, performed with stunning accuracy and taste. Their own charts frequently use substitute chords and unexpected harmonies to open up these familiar songs, infusing them with new vitality. Rhythmically, they combine punch with fluid ease, adding a soulful feel to the mix.

Founded in 2006 by members of the Bay Area Metro Chorus and Garden City Chorus of San Jose CA, VIH is directed by world-renowned conductor Dr. Greg Lynn. "Northern California's Premier Men's A Cappella Chorus" boasts a membership of 131, from ages 16 to 99, and they recently returned from their first international tour, of Russia in August, 2009. Dr. Lynn very quickly turned Voices in Harmony into one of the finest a cappella choruses in the world, winning a 3rd Place Bronze medal at the Barbershop Harmony Society's 2008 International Choral Competition in Nashville, TN. The 14 songs of "Now & Then" are pure, heartstring-tugging oldies, sung by guys who love to harmonize together-in short, the very stuff of which Barbershop was made! Of all the contemporary a cappella groups The Nylons have always put on one of the best shows, in great part because of their background in live theater. So this DVD of a historic concert shot in Japan in 1986 is a real treat and a must for all Nylons fans. The high production values shows the guys at their high-energy best and features Marc Connors, Claude Morrison, Paul Cooper and Arnold Robinson. As well as the thirteen song concert footage there are six bonus music videos that the group has shot over the years which helps makes this a most enjoyable watch!
