Busto graduated as a medical doctor from Valladolid University. In 1995 he created and founded the women's choir Kanta Cantemus Korua. Known internationally as a composer of music and as a choral conductor, he has presented his compositions at the Fourth World Symposium on Choral Music in Sydney, Australia in 1996, and was guest conductor of the Tokyo Cantat in 2000. His choirs have won first place awards in France, Italy, Austria, and Germany. Busto has served on the jury of composition and choral competitions in Spain, France, Italy and Japan. Javier Busto's Missa Minima, edited by John Ratledge, was designed for short worship services. Because of this, it was written without complexity, expressing the possibilities of rhythmic and melodic changes, but following the classical concept of the Mass. The movements can stand alone or be performed together, making this accessible for high school, college, or professional choirs.

Javier Busto's Poema a un olmo seco, edited by John Ratledge, is both unique and accessible. The poem, which translates to "Poem to an old (or dry) elm," was written by Spanish poet, Antonio Machado (1875-1939).
Salve, written by Javier Busto and edited by John Ratledge, was premiered on November 15, 2014 at a tribute concert to Javier Busto in Hondarribia. The concert was called "Begirada urdina" or "Eyes of Blue," and this piece was composed for this special occasion. The title responds to the author's intention of emphasizing the Salve greeting, but still recognizes it as a hymn to the Virgin Mary, with a beautiful and peaceful end.

Javier Busto's Tres Cantas Cantabras for SATB a cappella, edited by John Ratledge, was written with a strong desire to "not ruin such beautiful popular melodies." In the first lullaby, the child is being put to bed, while the second lullaby represents the child being warned that the boogeyman is coming. In the third and final lullaby, the child finally drifts off to sleep.
