Psalm 117 is the 117th psalm of the Book of Psalms, beginning in the English King James Version "O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people." The Book of Psalms is the third section of the Hebrew Bible, and a book of the Christian Old Testament. In the Greek Septuagint version of the bible, and in the Latin Vulgate, this psalm is Psalm 116 in a slightly different numbering system. In Latin, it is known as "Laudate Dominum".
The short psalm of praise is a regular part of Jewish, Catholic, Anglican and Protestant liturgies. It has been set to music often, in many languages.
Beginning with a simple yet stately unison statement and expanding into a beautiful, homophonic exclamation, there is no doubt that this will be a powerful addition to your program.

Here is an original piece for treble voices that offers pure Latin vowels, a true organ accompaniment and a full vocal range required of the singers. A gift to the repertoire.

Most of these are motets and many are familiar (Palestrina's Sicut cervus and Exsultate Deo, Gabrieli's Jubilate Deo, Lassus' Timor et tremor, Josquin's Ave Maria) and all are included in Rutter's published anthology, European Sacred Music (Oxford). As Rutter states, the program's theme is to focus on the "wealth of sacred music...created in continental Europe out of the ferment of the age of Reformation", and while Rutter has chosen primarily works resulting from the "extraordinary flowering" of musical activity in the Catholic church during this period, we also are treated to a motet by Bach (O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht BWV 118/231, often mis-classified as a cantata), a Magnificat (presumably) by Buxtehude, and a psalm (100) by Schutz. Some of Sweelinck's innovations were of profound musical importance, including the fugue-he was the first to write an organ fugue which began simply, with one subject, successively adding texture and complexity until a final climax and resolution, an idea which was perfected at the end of the Baroque era by Bach. This is a world premiere recording of the complete Latin Motets, including the Christmas motet Hodie Christus natus est. Melius Christiansen 135th Anniversary Concert Four cameras were used capture this concert of five Minnesota choirs celebrating the legacy of F. Melius Christiansen. Stunning audio and video make this concert DVD a must-have item for your library. One camera was mounted in the shell allowing you to view the conductors from the singer's point of view. Norway-born Frederick Melius Christiansen arrived in the Midwest in 1888 and immediately began establishing his career as a master musician. Accepting an appointment as music director of the fledgling music program at St. Olaf College in Minneapolis, as founder and leader of the St. Olaf Choir from 1911-41, he established a legacy of excellence, which still influences a cappella performances of choirs throughout the country. The Augsburg Choir, Concordia Choir, Concordia U. Christus Chorus, Gustavus Choir, St. Olaf Choir and The Anniversary Festival Choir celebrate the anniversary of F. Melius' birth in 1871 on two beautifully-recorded, powerful choral CDs, 16 pieces on the first and 10 on the second. Our favorites, of course, are "Lost in the Night," "In Dulci Jubilo," "Wake, Awake" and "Praise to the Lord," all arranged by the "Music Master of the Midwest," in addition to "Psalm 50" and "Beautiful Savior," composed by F. Melius. Wonderful! Songlist: Fest Und Gedenspruche, Lost In The Night, Congori Shango, Stay With US, Canticle Of Praise, Psalm 43, Vidi Aquam, Oculi Ominum In Te Sperant Domine Scutz, Com Away To The Skies, Nun Danket Alle Gott, Make We Joy, In Ducli Jubilo, Living Peace / Heiwa No Kiseki, E'en So, Lord Jesus, LAudate Dominum, Hope In god, The Lightener Of The Stars, I Will Be With You, Wake Awake, Venite Populi, Alleluia, This Little Light Of Mine, Praise To The Lord, Beautiful Saviour Coro Hispano de San Francisco : Ramillete If "Mexican Baroque" has caught your ear, this wide-ranging anthology of choral music from Mexico, Central and South America is a must; it's got Latin American Renaissance, Baroque, Classic, Romantic and folk-originate works in a rich array of textures, styles and sonorities, from chorus-orchestra down to voice-and-guitar, all performed to the nines by the nation's premiere ensemble dedicated to this repertory: Coro Hispano de San Francisco. Brilliant vocal solos and on-target instrumental work by some of the West Coast's leading names in early music combine with foot-stomping Veracruz zapateados and robust, ranchera-style singing in this sampler from a half-dozen different concert programs. Latin America's choral music is a little-known treasure that's been quietly awaiting rediscovery for decades (or centuries- depending on how far back you want to go). Leading the way in its interpretation is the Coro Hispano de San Francisco, which has been exploring and performing this repertory exclusively since its first concert in 1975. On this disc-its third CD release- the nation's premiere Hispanic chorus turns in an amazingly varied sampling of music for voices and instruments from the cathedrals of Puebla, Lima and Sevilla, the ranchos of Early California, the plazas of Veracruz, all the way to the rain-forest missions of Paraguay and the mountain villages of Nigeria. The ethereal "Hosanna," combines a concise traditional text with a repetitive theme and mixed meter; "The Snow," by the Romantic English composer Edward Elgar, is accompanied by two violins and piano, a delicately melodic, tonally-centered work in sonata form. "The Seeds Of Love," begins with a jazzy, engaging piano intro, alternating with a cappella choir, gradually becoming homophonic in texture; a "jazz/classical" fusion that is undeniably moving. Several Finnish composers, an Estonian, and Canadian composer Stephen Hatfield's interpretation of seven South African freedom songs, "African Celebration," round out this eclectic and adventurous recording. Songlist: Laudate Dominum, Missa Brevis, Kyria, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Nigra Sum, Hosanna, The Snow, The Seeds of Love, In Praise of Music, First Section, Second Section, Third Section, Vesy Vasyy Lumen Alle, "Suite" de Lorca, Cancion de jinete, El Grito, La luna Asoma, Malaguena, Karjan Kotiinkutsu, African Celebration Javier Busto (Kanta Cantemus Korua) : Hondarriba Renowned composer and conductor Javier Busto Sagrado, creator and founder, in 1995 of the women's choir Kanta Cantemus Korua, was born in the city of Hondarribia in the Basque country of Spain. For "Hondarribia, Ametsetan," an eclectic collection of 16 largely sacred works, most sung in Spanish, Busto directs a mixed-voice a cappella ensemble of 32 voices. "Himno a la virgen," "Ave Maria," "Laudate Dominum," "Laudate Pueri," the lovely "Soinuen itsasoa," "O Sacrum Convivium," "Ametsetan," "Porrusalda," "Esta tierra," "O Magnum Mysterium" and "Hodie Christus natus est" are some of our favorites, but it's hard to choose. Busto's nod to his hometown in the title in this fine collection is apropos, as all sacred music strives to bring us home. Lovely and touching choral works, by Javier Busto, one of the world's best conductor/composers. Songlist: Himno A La Virgen, Ave Maria, Laudate Dominum, O Sacrum Convivium, Jubilate Deo, Ave Verum, Laudate Pueri, Soinuen Itsasoa, Sagastipean, Ametsetan, Porrusalda, A Tu Lado, Esta Tierra, Paso, O Magnum Mysterium, Hodie Christus Natus Est Kanta Cantemus Korua : Javier Busto: Musika Founded in Gipuzkoa, Spain by famed Spanish composer/conductor Javier Busto, KCK is comprised of 18 female voices, in their middle to late teens. The internationally-known Busto's choirs have won first place awards in France, Italy, Austria and Germany. "Javier Busto: Musika" is mostly Christian sacred music, and was recorded in Spain in 1995. The group's bright, clear sound is the perfect complement for these 24 lovely compositions. Some favorites are "Kanta Cantemus," the 3-part "Hiru Eguberri Kanta," "Ave Maria," "Magnificat," the beautiful 2-part "Muxika," "Laudate Dominum," "The Lord is My Shepherd," "Alleluia," the 5-part "Gauaren Zergatiaren Bila," "Amodica" and "For Us." They have toured in 10 states and on five continents. "Impart" is a piano-accompanied collection of 16 sacred and religious songs, beginning with Jeffrey LaValley's "Holy, Holy, Holy" and Vivaldi's "Et Exultavit" and "Esurientes" from "Vivaldi for Treble Voices." Rollo Dilworth's "Jordan's Angels," "Sherri Porterfield's "Laudate Dominum," Antonio Lotti's short-but-lovely a cappella "Cum Sancto Spiritu," Gabriel Faure's "Sanctus" and "Cantique de Jean Racine," Julie Knowles' "Let the Nations Sing," Bach's "Der Herr Segne Euch," Keith Hampton's "True Light" and the title song by Stephen Paulus are some favorites, but in fact every cut is beautifully chosen and performed. The Chorus is delighted to celebrate their 25th season, in spite of a 4-month hiatus due to Hurricane Katrina. There are 52 selections here on the two discs, impressive not only for the number, but for the difficulty and maturity of the pieces and the quality of the performances by this veteran Chorus. Attempting to choose favorites is not easy, for instance, disk one begins with David Elliot's joyous "When I Sing," Mozart's wonderful "Laudate Dominum," and Leslie/Calvert's heartstring-tugging "Song for the Mira;" each of these is a stone winner. We absolutely enjoyed Andre Thomas' "Rockin' Jerusalem," Bela Bartok's "Don't Leave Me," Imant Raminsh's "Song of the Stars," John Rutter's "Gaelic Blessing," Jule Styne's "Never, Never Land" and Z. Randall Stroope's "Inscription of Hope." On disk 2, we find S. Superbly sung by these Norwegians, the works draw attention to a highly varied group of sought-after composers, whose careers often followed a colourful course. During the first half of the sixteenth century, there was no greater a ruler than the Emperor Charles V, whose court was lavishly supplied with music by composers of high talent. Charles had a personal enthusiasm for music, and his chapel was more or less in constant attendance on his travels. It is small wonder, then, that a number of the greatest composers of the age had some connection with him, including the Franco-Flemish composers Manchicourt, Cristobal de Morales and Nicolas Gombert. Complementing these composers are the perhaps less well-known Guerrero and Jacobus Clemens non Papa. This superb collection confirms these composers as major figures of their era, and will serve as a perfect introduction to the music of the period. Their performance is smart and stylish, employing a playful yet sophisticated approach that enhances their already remarkable singing. Songlist: Reges terrae, Regina caeli, Laudate Dominum, O magnum mysterium, Hei mihi, Domine, Ego sum qui sum, O Virgo virginum, Exaltata est sancta Dei Genitrix, Agnus Dei (from Missa 'Reges terrae') Pacific International Chidren's Choir Festival : Fifth Anniversary Collection Since its debut in 1998, the Pacific International Children's Choir Festival has established itself as one of the finest events of its kind in the US. This is a double CD set, featuring a collection of performances fom festival years 1998 through 2001 on Disc 1 and highlights from PICCFEST 2002 on Disc 2. There are 19 live, accompanied, wonderful, spirited songs on Disc 1, by some of the best children's choirs we've heard: from "Panis Angelicus," by the Phoenix Boys Choir and "Jabberwocky," by the Seattle Children's Chorus, to "On suuri sun rantas autius" by the Surrey Children's Choir and "It Don't Mean a Thing" by the Youth Choir of Central Oregon--it's all pure, sweet stuff. This is a real feel-good CD on many levels. Though all accompanied, the focus is on the voices of the children, which are incredible! Recommended.
