A new recording by John Rutter and his Cambridge Singers is always welcome, and this one features 20 works drawn from the sacred choral repertoire of the Renaissance and Baroque. Most of these are motets and many are familiar (Palestrina's Sicut cervus and Exsultate Deo, Gabrieli's Jubilate Deo, Lassus' Timor et tremor, Josquin's Ave Maria) and all are included in Rutter's published anthology, European Sacred Music (Oxford). As Rutter states, the program's theme is to focus on the "wealth of sacred music...created in continental Europe out of the ferment of the age of Reformation", and while Rutter has chosen primarily works resulting from the "extraordinary flowering" of musical activity in the Catholic church during this period, we also are treated to a motet by Bach (O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht BWV 118/231, often mis-classified as a cantata), a Magnificat (presumably) by Buxtehude, and a psalm (100) by Schutz.

Famous for his keyboard works Sweelinck was also a skilled composer for voices as well, and composed over 250 works for voice (chansons, madrigals, motets and Psalms). Some of Sweelinck's innovations were of profound musical importance, including the fugue-he was the first to write an organ fugue which began simply, with one subject, successively adding texture and complexity until a final climax and resolution, an idea which was perfected at the end of the Baroque era by Bach. This is a world premiere recording of the complete Latin Motets, including the Christmas motet Hodie Christus natus est.

Four cameras were used capture this concert of five Minnesota choirs celebrating the legacy of F. Melius Christiansen. Norway-born Frederick Melius Christiansen arrived in the Midwest in 1888 and immediately began establishing his career as a master musician. Accepting an appointment as music director of the fledgling music program at St. Olaf College in Minneapolis, as founder and leader of the St. Olaf Choir from 1911-41, he established a legacy of excellence, which still influences a cappella performances of choirs throughout the country. The Augsburg Choir, Concordia Choir, Concordia U. Christus Chorus, Gustavus Choir, St. Olaf Choir and The Anniversary Festival Choir celebrate the anniversary of F. This much-acclaimed women's classical choir from Vancouver, British Columbia, performs a diverse, frequently modern, repertoire drawn from many cultures world over. Renowned composer and conductor Javier Busto Sagrado, creator and founder, in 1995 of the women's choir Kanta Cantemus Korua, was born in the city of Hondarribia in the Basque country of Spain. For "Hondarribia, Ametsetan," an eclectic collection of 16 largely sacred works, most sung in Spanish, Busto directs a mixed-voice a cappella ensemble of 32 voices. "Himno a la virgen," "Ave Maria," "Laudate Dominum," "Laudate Pueri," the lovely "Soinuen itsasoa," "O Sacrum Convivium," "Ametsetan," "Porrusalda," "Esta tierra," "O Magnum Mysterium" and "Hodie Christus natus est" are some of our favorites, but it's hard to choose. Busto's nod to his hometown in the title in this fine collection is apropos, as all sacred music strives to bring us home. Lovely and touching choral works, by Javier Busto, one of the world's best conductor/composers.

Founded in Gipuzkoa, Spain by famed Spanish composer/conductor Javier Busto, KCK is comprised of 18 female voices, in their middle to late teens. The internationally-known Busto's choirs have won first place awards in France, Italy, Austria and Germany. "Javier Busto: Musika" is mostly Christian sacred music, and was recorded in Spain in 1995. The group's bright, clear sound is the perfect complement for these 24 lovely compositions. The oldest boychoir in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area (founded in 1962), The Minnesota Boychoir's reputation for excellence has led to invitations local and national music conventions, touring Broadway companies, orchestras, operas and symphonies. They have toured in 10 states and on five continents. "Impart" is a piano-accompanied collection of 16 sacred and religious songs, beginning with Jeffrey LaValley's "Holy, Holy, Holy" and Vivaldi's "Et Exultavit" and "Esurientes" from "Vivaldi for Treble Voices." "Looking Back and Looking Up" is a sumptuous, 2-CD collection by the three talented branches of the New Orleans Children's Chorus, the Youth Chorale, Chamber Ensemble and Concert Chorus, all directed by Cheryl Dupont, with piano accompaniment by Kevin Caparotta. The Chorus is delighted to celebrate their 25th season, in spite of a 4-month hiatus due to Hurricane Katrina. There are 52 selections here on the two discs, impressive not only for the number, but for the difficulty and maturity of the pieces and the quality of the performances by this veteran Chorus. Attempting to choose favorites is not easy, for instance, disk one begins with David Elliot's joyous "When I Sing," Mozart's wonderful "Laudate Dominum," and Leslie/Calvert's heartstring-tugging "Song for the Mira;" each of these is a stone winner. We absolutely enjoyed Andre Thomas' "Rockin' Jerusalem," Bela Bartok's "Don't Leave Me," Imant Raminsh's "Song of the Stars," John Rutter's "Gaelic Blessing," Jule Styne's "Never, Never Land" and Z. Randall Stroope's "Inscription of Hope." On disk 2, we find S. Nordic Voices have put together a unique collection of pieces by sixteenth-century composers associated with the courts of Emperor Charles V, a great musical enthusiast. Superbly sung by these Norwegians, the works draw attention to a highly varied group of sought-after composers, whose careers often followed a colourful course. During the first half of the sixteenth century, there was no greater a ruler than the Emperor Charles V, whose court was lavishly supplied with music by composers of high talent. Charles had a personal enthusiasm for music, and his chapel was more or less in constant attendance on his travels. It is small wonder, then, that a number of the greatest composers of the age had some connection with him, including the Franco-Flemish composers Manchicourt, Cristobal de Morales and Nicolas Gombert. Complementing these composers are the perhaps less well-known Guerrero and Jacobus Clemens non Papa. This superb collection confirms these composers as major figures of their era, and will serve as a perfect introduction to the music of the period. Their performance is smart and stylish, employing a playful yet sophisticated approach that enhances their already remarkable singing.

Since its debut in 1998, the Pacific International Children's Choir Festival has established itself as one of the finest events of its kind in the US. This is a double CD set, featuring a collection of performances fom festival years 1998 through 2001 on Disc 1 and highlights from PICCFEST 2002 on Disc 2. There are 19 live, accompanied, wonderful, spirited songs on Disc 1, by some of the best children's choirs we've heard: from "Panis Angelicus," by the Phoenix Boys Choir and "Jabberwocky," by the Seattle Children's Chorus, to "On suuri sun rantas autius" by the Surrey Children's Choir and "It Don't Mean a Thing" by the Youth Choir of Central Oregon--it's all pure, sweet stuff. Disc 2, from 2002, features 13 live cuts by 13 different groups, from Indianapolis Children's Choir Kantorei, Northwest Girlchoir Vivace Choir and Pacific Chorale Children's Chorus to the Piedmont Choirs Concert Choir, the Portland Symphonic Girlchoir (one of our favorites), and Young Voices of Colorado--there's not a bad cut here. This is a real feel-good CD on many levels. Though all accompanied, the focus is on the voices of the children, which are incredible! Recommended.

The SF Boys Chorus, founded as a resource for the San Francisco Opera in 1948, has developed into one of America's foremost musical and educational institutions for singing boys. Over the years the chorus has regularly provided boys for choruses and solos for the SF Opera, Symphony, Ballet and the Carmel Bach Festival. Officially named "SF's Singing Ambassadors to the World," the chorus has performed in Carnegie Hall and toured in Europe, Russia, Japan, Korea, Italy and Australia. "We're On Our Way" has 16 songs, particularly nice are the 6 movements of Mozart's "Missa Brevis in C, K.220," and his "Laudate Dominum," Cesar Franck's "Panis Angelicus," Henry Purcell's "Sound the Trumpet," Schubert's "Ave Maria," F. Voices of Ascension evolved from a 1989 concert series of Church of the Ascension in NYC, when Dennis Keene directed the Ascension choir in a major music festival, "Tribute to Durufle," a retrospective of the French composer that drew international attention. The following year the group incorporated separately from the church as Voices of Ascension. The number of singers in the professional ensemble varies from 20 to 40, among the finest and most skilled ensemble singers and soloists in the country. Metropolitan Opera star Hei-Kyung Hong blesses the VOA with a lyric soprano voice of uncommon beauty and warmth. 15 selections; right from the beginning Randall Thompson's soaring a cappella "Alleluia" and Mozart's "Laudate Dominum" show off the amazing soprano voice of Hei-Kyung Hong. Two by Pablo Casals, "Tota Pulchra" and "Nigra Sum," Felix Mendelsson's "Hear My Prayer" and Durufle's "Tu es Petrus" make it abundantly clear that we are in the presence of greatness.
