The two volumes Anthems for Choirs 2 and 3 form a comprehensive collection for soprano and alto voices ranging from the 13th century to the present day. They are suitable for cathedral, church, school, women's, girls', and boys' choirs. Volume 2 is devoted to unison and two-part anthems whilst Volume 3 comprises anthems in three or more parts and a set of five introits. Four new anthems have been specially commissioned from David Lord, John Rutter, Robert Sherlaw Johnson, and Phyllis Tate. Organized in 1984 under the direction of Mack Wilberg, the 90-voice BYUCC is one of two highly select mixed choral ensembles that continue a long choral singing tradition at the University. The group has appeared in concert at national ACDA and MTNA conventions and with the Utah Symphony. On "All Creatures" the group's full, rich, flawless sound is featured on a collection of 12 symphonically accompanied, mostly traditional Christian hymns and songs of praise. The title tune, "The Lord Is My Shepherd," John Gardner's "Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning," "Be Still My Soul" and "Jesus, Once of Humble Birth" are particularly fine. Mack Wilberg's skills as an arranger are evident on four songs, and his own compositions, "Jesu, the Very Thought Is Sweet," and "Fantasia on Early Latter-day Saint Hymns," are wonderful. The music heard on this recording represents a cross-section of the sacred choral pieces I have written over a period of some twelve years. Two paramount considerations have shaped it: first, the performers and occasions it was commissioned for, and second, the texts (which I always choose with great deliberation). Gloria, the most substantial piece, was written as a concert work. The Latin text, drawn from the Ordinary of the Mass, is a centuries-old challenge to the composer: exalted, devotional and jubilant by turns. My setting, which is based mainly on one of the Gregorian chants associated with the text, divides into three movements roughly corresponding with traditional symphonic structure. The other pieces are all anthems, primarily intended for use in the context of a church service. They range in difficulty from very simple to fairly challenging, though it was my hope in writing them that none would be beyond the reach of a capable church choir. Although the accompaniments were originally for organ (or, in the case of For the beauty of the earth and All things bright and beautiful, for piano), I enjoyed scoring them for orchestra and prefer them in this form. The three unaccompanied pieces, however, (God be in my head, Open thou mine eyes, and A prayer of Saint Patrick) reflect my love of the a cappella medium.

GCS was founded in 1991 with the help of the Guelph (Canada) Arts Council, to provide youth aged nine and up with an opportunity to experience a professional level of musicianship. There are now 3 divisions of choirs, all represented on this CD, Choir I, a treble choir of children ages 9 and up, Choir II, a more advanced choir of children ages 10 and up, and Guelph Youth Singers, an SATB choir founded in 1997 for girls ages 16 and up and boys with changed voices. Here are 21 songs with sacred music like Mendelssohn's "I Waited For the Lord" and "Lift Thine Eyes," Handel's "Awake the Trumpet's Lofty Sound" and Schubert's "The Lord is My Shepherd" co-existing nicely with W.H Anderson's title tune, Newfoundland folksong "Blooming Bright Star of Belle Isle, the Japanese children's song "Hotaru Koi" and the African folksongs medley "African Celebration." We have just listened to a great 3-part series by Dr. Rodde's talented mixed-voice ensemble, the Iowa State Singers, and now we are treated to the Iowa Statesmen, Iowa State's popular men's over 100-voice choir. The two groups share a love of a cappella classical Christian music, such as Jakob Handl's "O Magnum Mysterium" and "Confirma hoc, Deus;" and spirituals such as Stephen Hatfield's joyous "Heaven Somewhere," and the Moses Hogan-arranged "Ev'ry Time I Feel The Spirit." The Statesmen also love folk music, such as "Loch Lomond," Gwenyth Walker's piano-accompanied "Crossing the Bar," the silly, live "Johnny Schmoker," "Cindy," the powerful, rhythmic African song "Noel," and the Russell Robinson-arranged "Ol' Man River." Finally, to remind us that the Statesmen are a collegiate group, there is a rousing collection of ISU School Songs. Dr. Rodde's groups share a rich, spirited sound, soaring leads, and top-drawer song selection, arrangements and direction. It adds up to a beautiful, entertaining collection!

Founded in Gipuzkoa, Spain by famed Spanish composer/conductor Javier Busto, KCK is comprised of 18 female voices, in their middle to late teens. The internationally-known Busto's choirs have won first place awards in France, Italy, Austria and Germany. "Javier Busto: Musika" is mostly Christian sacred music, and was recorded in Spain in 1995. The group's bright, clear sound is the perfect complement for these 24 lovely compositions. John Rutter composed his Requiem in 1985. The work follows the precedents of Brahms and Faure in using carefully selected texts in place of much of the standard Missa Pro defunctis sequence. The resulting composition has an arch-like formal structure within which is contained some of Rutter's most haunting (and, in the case of 'The Lord is my shepherd', well known) choral music to date. Also included are two items from the Birthday madrigals collection composed in honour of the jazz pianist George Shearing, and eight further sacred works. The double-choir Hymn to the Creator of Light is a wonderful composition, far removed from the romantic style with which Rutter has sometimes been associated; 'A disc to delight all those who admire Rutter's choral writing. Full of delights and with something for everyone. Certainly a must!' (Organists' Review)
