Donald Moore : Merry Christmas Madrigals

Review: A merry madrigal will be a nice addition to your 3-part choir's a cappella seasonal repertoire. Characteristic counterpoint makes this original Donald Moore piece a familiar form but, unlike many Renaissance chorals, the vocal ranges, subject matter, and number of voice parts have been specifically designed for developing choirs. A festive feature for holiday concerts and Madrigal feasts, with just enough optional bass notes in the 3-part mixed/SAB for your developing men's section. A "fa la la" section in the joyful number "A Merry Madrigal" makes it appropriate for both Christmas and general use. It's a fine learning piece in the madrigal style, yet the singable melodies make the independent vocal lines easy to learn. Don Moore is a master at creating works that develop choral singing, teach a classic choral style and, most importantly, sound great. Use it in concerts and at festivals and adjudications. Welcomed repetition and smart voice leading pave the way to success for developing 3-part choirs. The guys sing in their easiest range; the sopranos, a mostly step-wise melody; and the altos, intuitive harmonies. Add the optional sleighbells and it's ready to go for Christmas.

Songlist: Merry Christmas Madrigal, A Merry Madrigal, A Holiday Madrigal, A Joyful Madrigal

Various Arrangers : A Cappella Carols from Around The World

Review: "The Stone House Carol" is based on the old French Carol, "Noel Nouvelet" and has a beautiful melody and words. By joining this with the English Language Easter Carol version, it was possible to write a piece meditating on the Greatest Love (and Sacrifice) of all. After a short mysterioso introduction the main theme is stated three times, at first tentatively, then triumphantly. The final verse returns to the sense of awe and mystery of the introduction, ending with a musical question mark that is perhaps testing our response to the words being uttered. The two popular Swedish Christmas Carols, "Nu Ar Detv Jul Igen" and "Na Juldagsmorgon Glimmar", capture complementary aspects of the Christmas spirit. Nu Ar Detv Jul Igen is in the style of the Hambo, one of the most popular of Swedish folk dances. At Christmas time, the Hambo is danced around the Yule tree by children gaily singing these playful verses. Nar Juldagsmorgon Glimmar is a more expressive carol, filled with the magic of Jesus' birth in the humble manger. Throughout the arrangement, the dance carol should be sung lightly and accented, with a dancing buoyancy. Nar Juldagsmorgon Glimmar should be sung legato with expressive lines and should never be covered by the quicker carol. "Joulupuu on Rakennetu" is a Finnish carol and two Norman Lubuff arrangements makes this a great collection.

Songlist: Haitian Noel, Two Swedish Carols, Gloucestershire Wassail, Whence Comes This Rush Of Wings, Joulupuu on Rakennetu, The Stone House Carol

Various Arrangers : Sacred Christmas Carols for 3-Part Mixed Voices

Review: 'In Excelsis Gloria' is a beautiful, simple and effective setting of the 15th century text. 'Two Cradle Meditations' includes the cherished Christmas carol, 'Away in a Manger,' and the choral lullaby 'O Jesu So Sweet.' Surely it will be a great addition to your Christmas program. 'Born Is the Babe' announces the birth of Jesus as well as anticipating and celebrating the atonement and resurrection. The three-voice writing has the flair and accent of a Medieval/Renaissance dance. The setting can be effective with a large choir or only a handful of singers. 'Four Chorales for the Christmas Season' includes 4 beautiful of arrangements of 'Let All Together Praise Our God,' 'Lo, How a Rose is Growing,' 'O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright,' and 'Once He Came in Blessing.'

Various Arrangers : Six Carols

Review: The Cornish folk tune 'The Holy Bears a Berry,' alternates between men and women's voices. Solo sections may be sung by small groups. This arrangement is best for church, community, or school choirs. 'Ding Dong! Merrily on High' is a vigorous 8 part a cappella piece with constant vocal imitation of bells. Elaborate counterpoint and canonic devices. Completely diatonic, harmonically and melodically conservative. Rhythmic ostinatos give non-stop energy leading to dazzling finish. 'Gloria in Excelsis Deo' begins and ends with a rhythmic and exciting statement of the Gloria text. The middle section is tranquil and effectively emotes the feeling of peace that is being presented in the text. The final statement is one of peace. Challenging, but well worth the work. Van's arrangement of 'Once in Royal David's City.' is an introspective and reflective setting of this Christmas standard. The composer includes many of the elements that have become associated with this hymn. This arrangement begins with either a treble solo, or with all sopranos, it then broadens into a rich setting of the following stanzas, and ends with a hushed treatment of the text "And our eyes at last shall see him." May be used in worship or concerts. 'Angels We have Heard on High' is a beautiful and energetic arrangement that is appropriate for both worship and concert use. The piece is written in a unique way that incorporates vocal accompaniments that are shared between men's and women's voices. Includes soaring descants throughout. Composed in the Australian winter of 2005, 'Ave Maria' was written by Jacobs in response to the death of a close friend's mother. Her passion for Renaissance music influenced many aspects of the piece, particularly text, and the decision to set it for two a cappella choirs.

Songlist: Holly Bears a Berry, The, Ding Dong! Merrily on High, Gloria in excelsis Deo, Once in Royal David's City, Angels We Have Heard on High, Ave Maria

Various Arrangers : Spanish Carols

Review: A fine collection of unaccompanied Spanish Christmas carols with both English and Spanish text along with a pronunciation guide. The Emily Crocker arrangements, as always, are delightful and are most rewarding in performance. The King's Singers arrangements of three traditional carols are a special treat and the Norman Luboff arrangement of "A La Nanita Nana" is from his Holiday hit album "Songs of Christmas". Rounding out the collection are three arrangements of sixteenth century carols from the New York Pro Musica series.

Various Arrangers : Spirituals for Christmas

Review: The upbeat gospel-flavored anthem "Rock-a My Saviour" is a real treat. With a quiet energy, it soon builds to a celebrative song of praise. Beginning with a basic melodic pattern from the men, the other voices join for a rich and spirited anthem with a hushed conclusion. The original a cappella Christmas spiritual "Run To The Manger" is packed with rhythmic vitality and inspiring lyrics. Features a great hook and call-and-response solos. The master of the African American spiritual Moses Hogan creates a glorious arrangement of "Glory, Glory, Glory to the Newborn King", and adds his own words and music, based on the spiritual "Go Tell It On The Mountain". Selected for the Paul A. Smith Choral Series, "See Dat Babe" features excellent writing for the a cappella choir, with all the rhythm and vigor to bring the house down.

Songlist: See Dat Babe, Run To The Manger, Rock-a My Saviour, Glory, Glory, Glory to the Newborn King, Have You Heard the News?

Alan Bullard : A Light in the Stable

Review: A Light in the Stable tells the Christmas story through a blend of original settings and well-known carols, and is suitable for both concert and church choirs. The familiar Gospel words (which may be spoken, sung, or replaced with other appropriate readings) are interspersed with a range of new material, including the lively 'Glory to God'; 'Sing Lullaby', in which Mary foreshadows the events of Jesus' life; and the reflective 'A Light for Today', an evocation of the Nativity tableau. The audience/congregation are encouraged to join in for some carols, and choir and listeners will delight in the new settings of familiar words. A range of soloists may optionally take some of the vocal lines, and the accompaniment is equally flexible. A wonderful companion to Bullard's Advent celebration, O Come, Emmanuel, this work is perfect for anyone looking for a new take on familiar Christmas words and melodies.

Alfred Burt and Jimmy Joyce Singers : This Is Christmas Songbook

Review: Considered by some to be the finest recording of Christmas carols ever, these original compositions were written by Alfred and primary lyricists Wihla Hutson and Bates G. Burt (Alfred's father). In fact, the carols were initially sent as Christmas messages to Burt family members and friends! Alfred died in 1954 at the age of thirty three, but his legacy has brought joy to untold myriads of listeners ever since. Artists from Nat "King" Cole to the Boston Pops Orchestra and Chorus have popularized what conductor John Williams described as "mini-masterpieces." The sixteen voice a cappella choir directed by arranger Jimmy Joyce (who had worked with Alfred in the Alvino Rey Orchestra) is sprightly and surefooted in their performance, which was recorded in 1963. A sentimental and popular favorite.

Songlist: This Is Christmas, Christmas Cometh Caroling, Ah, Bleak And Chill The Wintry Wind, Come, Dear Children, Some Children See Him, Sleep, Baby Mine, All On A Christmas Morning, Caroling, Caroling, The Star Carol, We'll Dress The House, Christ In The Stranger's Guise, Nigh Bethlehem, What Are The Signs, Jesu Parvule, O Hearken Ye
