Dr. Russell L. Robinson has been on the faculty at the University of Florida since 1984, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in choral and music education and is Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Education department. Highly in demand, Dr. Robinson has made over 300 appearances as a conductor, speaker and presenter at festivals, workshops, honor choirs, all-state choirs and state, regional, national and international conferences in the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, Central America, and Australia as well as conducting venues, which include: Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Boston's Symphony Hall, the White House, Washington's National Cathedral and the Wiesbaden, Germany Kurhaus. He is a past President of the Florida Music Educators Association, Interim Associate Dean of the UF College of Fine Arts, National Collegiate Chair for the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and MENC Choral Adviser. Hopsa! Lisella!, an 18th century Alsatian folk song, quite literally sways back and forth as it is sung. The feeling of acceleration typical of 18th century song is captured through ritards, accelerandos and tempo changes at the beginning of each verse. Add tambourine and triangle to enhance the French character of the song. In two parts, this accessible setting will work nicely with any treble group. Duration: ca. 3:05

A great fit for choirs of any age or ability! Harry Belafonte sang this joyful West Indies song on his 1956 album Calypso. Dr. Robinson's arrangement has just the right amount of repetition versus development, and will come together quickly with intuitive voice leading and some stylistic syncopation. One a cappella refrain just after the key change features the conga to keep the groove going, and a final descant adds a rhythmic counterline above.
