A modulation in the last A section is delightfully unexpected. It's a great chart to end the Christmas show.

It is sung with hums and oo's, no lyrics. The feeling is humorous with traditional harmonies. 'Boogie Woogie Santa' has a 40's, slightly big band feel for voices with a soprano lead. The tempo is lively with pop harmonies. This is a fun, not serious tune. 'Santa Claus is Comin' to Town' is a blend of the Motown (Jackson 5) and rock (Bruce Springsteen) versions of this modern seasonal classic, this driving yet easy to sing arrangement makes for a perfect holiday closer or encore. Accidentals : I'm Not Going Home For Christmas   

NYC-based, 9-member, mixed-voice Accidentals have been personal favorites of ours since their 1995 Harmony Sweepstakes win. The group has gone through five wonderful CDS, numerous awards and some personnel changes since then (their alumni remain a cherished part of their family, and they are joined by Kevin, Todd and Stewart on this recording). The group is not going home for Christmas because New York City is their home, and the CD has a very New York flavor to it. "Winter in Manhattan" is a funny, surprising, hip Christmas song, and standards "Carol of the Bells," "Frosty the Snowman," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "What Child is This," "Three Traditional Carols," "Balulalow," and "Silent Night" are as beautifully and brightly arranged and harmonized as we have ever heard these songs. Several excellent group originals, including the title tune by Bill Mitchell and Jim Vincent, and two winners written by Dennis Deal, the accompanied, funny, brutally honest "The Last 12 Days of the World" and "(I Honestly Hate) This Gift." A pair of lovely classical pieces by Maurice Durufle, "Tota Pulchra" and "Ubi Caritas;" and Francis Poulenc's joyous "Hodie Christmas" are icing on the yummy musical cake that is "I'm not going home for Christmas!"

John Rutter conducts the Bach Choir and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in what is surely the finest new recoding of Christmas carols this year. Rutter is a composer, conductor and arranger and he brings all of that to these high holiday gems. Most of the carols are very well known, though in the arrangements of Rutter they sound completely fresh. There are some new carols here - Rutter's own 'Riu Riu Chiu' (the sounds a nightingale makes) and 'The Colours of Christmas' - and some new approaches to old ones. The main factor that makes this such a perfect selection of holiday music is the free intermixing of religious carols with contemporary Christmas songs.

Hurry, quick! Look at what the Santa's little helpers have been up to this year! It's hard to believe that these four young men from Minnesota have transfused these familiar holiday chestnuts with such inspiration and wonder, but indeed they have. "Let It Snow" takes as it's initial premise a Polynesian tiki lounge rhythm - already different - and then takes the cheery melody headlong into a ninth chord resolution! This CD is trimmed with so many gorgeous decorations that it improves the more one hears it, revealing subtleties that delight upon discovery. The creativity just saturates every song, whether as a distinctive rhythmic variation or unexpected countermelody, but always integrated into the whole (by the way, the group produced and arranged "Nog" themselves). In terms of intonation and blend, the Blenders (coinciding with their choice of name), are the best in the business: listen to "Do You Hear What I Hear" as just one excellent example. It's perfectly calibrated, the senses reveling in the purity of sound. Contemporary a cappella at its best.

The Gas House Gang : Some Children See Him...   

TWO YEARS IN THE MAKING!!! Perfection achieved!! Enough hyperbole already, you think to yourself? Not a chance...where's the thesaurus. Ok, we'll rein in our enthusiasm and resort to merely telling you about a Christmas album sung by one of the greatest barbershop quartets of our time. On this recording we listen to a quartet who achieves the tightest harmonies humanly possible apply those talents to traditional Christmas music. It's funny but as they aren't specifically singing barbershop chording, it is only occasionally that we remember just what tradition this fabulous singing springs from. Touches of jazz, elements of gospel reverence, and moments of almost operatic virtuosity abound throughout and all come together with vocal percussionist Jeff Thatcher of Rockapella adding his talents on "Go Tell It On the Mountain." We were also struck momentarily speechless when we found that, for the first time in quite a while, we actually enjoyed "The Little Drummer Boy" once more. The Gang rescues that song from the Christmas cul-de-sac of fruit-cake jokes with a beautiful rendition. What a tenor lead! You'll hear a fabulous Gregorianesque intro to "O Come Emanuel" which sounds as though it is emerging from a heavenly cathedral. The song list meanders through all of the Christmas spirit to arrive at the title track, "Some Children See Him." This is a wonderful message on which to leave, each child who sees Christ, sees Him in their own image...

Hampton Avenue : All I Want For Christmas   

Funky, swinging, contemporary, jazzy: this Canadian nine-member mixed ensemble is a stylistic delegation from a variety of genres. About half of the material is original, composed by Debbie Fleming, who also produced. They scat through the midsection of "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town," trilling in the upper registers and shaking the notes, ending on a descending smear. The original, "All I Want For Christmas" (with rhythm track), has a danceable vocal bass groove, while the "Charlie Brown Christmas" segues into "Christmas Time Is Here." The sound is brilliant, with big layered backing chords, and ringing high soprano parts.

Rudy Hart was the namesake of this excellent chorus who unfortunately is no longer with us. Rudy had a real gift as a barbershop arranger and his arrangements are some of the best anywhere. This gem of a recording was recently rediscovered and is now available on compact disc.

The 45-strong all-male Heart of Texas Chorus has been directed by International Barbershop Harmony Society veteran Eddie Martinez to District Championships and IBHS international chorus competitions. They bring us 12 classic Christmas songs, performed with buttery harmonies and ringing held chords. Our favorites are the medleys, "Away In A Manger/O Little Town of Bethlehem," "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear/Silent Night," "Angels From The Realms of Glory/While By My Sheep (Echo Carol)," and "Happy Holidays/The Holiday Season Medley," but it's hard to choose. A strong, beautiful second CD for the Heart of Texas.

We will never forget the way these two men and two women from Australia, members of Vocal Jazz group The Idea of North, whose reputation as the best a cappella group in Australia preceded them, strode onto the stage of the 2003 Harmony Sweeps National Finals in San Rafael. They would be the very last to perform a 12-minute set, and the regional winners from around the country, many of whom had performed to standing ovations by the sold-out audience, had set the bar incredibly high. But their first sweet notes were a revelation, and after ION's own roaring standing O, it was obvious to all who the audience favorite and National Champions were. There are 12 tunes here, some of our favorites are a bluesy, finger-popping take on "The Christmas Song," "Christmas Medley," which blends "Once in Royal David's City," "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen" and "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" with innovative arrangements; a gentle lullaby new to our ears, "The Silver Stars are In the Sky" touched and moved us; "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, a big-band accompanied celebration; two Salsa band-accompanied versions of "Mary's Boy Child," one featuring James Morrison, and a pair of lovely, soaring, orchestra-accompanied songs, "Candlelight Carol" and "A Child is Born." The Pop-flavored title tune is also new to us, a joyous, Jazz band-accompanied greeting to the season. The a cappella "Angel" with its powerful "in the arms of the angel" chorus underscores the probable meanness of the nativity. We hold The Idea of North in a special place in our hearts and relate to "This Christmas" as a gift from this extraordinary quartet!

This fun-loving group of over 130 women, the oldest active competing chorus in Sweet Adelines, who have ranked in the top ten each time they have competed in International competition, bring us a lovely Christmas album. There several well-known carols and popular songs among these 12 songs, like "White Christmas," a funny shopping-related parody of "Jingle Bells" appropriately called "Jingle All The Way," "Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas," "Carol Of The Bells," "Pretty Little Jesus," "Go Tell It On The Mountain," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "Mary Did You Know." The KCC joins with the Children's Chorus to sing a very fine "Peace, Peace/Silent Night" medley. There are also some very nice songs that are new to us, a narrated song that tells the story of the "Little Gray Donkey," the beautiful "When a Child is Born" and "Christmas Was Meant for Children." King Family : Christmas With The King Family   

The King Family's Christmas specials were an annual family television event, and their Christmas album was repackaged a staggering 8 times-nevertheless, Christmas with the King Family has been out of print since 1977! It's simply a classic of the genre, and we've added 11 mostly unreleased tracks pulled from various specials and TV appearances to the original album's 12 tracks to form a holiday album that we suspect will be a Christmas evergreen.

World-renowned a cappella group The King's Singers follow their recent Great American Songbook album with the Christmas equivalent, on a disc that pays homage to the group's roots whilst acknowledging their current passion for swing. Traditional favourites such as ", "In the bleak midwinter," and the beautiful Austrian carol "Still, Still, Still," jockey for position amongst modern-day classics like "Winter Wonderland," "Frosty the Snowman" and "Sleigh Ride." The Knudsens ascended through the a cappella ranks as a barbershop group, but are now firmly ensconced as pre-eminent contemporary artists. Their long-awaited "Yuletide" combines the seamless blend of barbershop with percussion-rich production of contemporary a cappella. The familiar "White Christmas" and "Christmas Song" are nicely arranged, with plush chords and smooth modulations. The walking bass of "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" sets up a swing feel, while the CD's closer, a "Christmas Hop" mix of the same song, is hip and shows the Knudsens cutting loose, incorporating techno effects into the tune. The tonal interplay of the pitches resonating off of each other in "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is inspiring and one of the most beautiful arrangements of this carol that we've heard. Uncle Daniel Knudsen (of the Mormon Tabenacle Choir) takes a solo turn on the classical art song "Gesu Bambino." This CD will appeal to a variety of listeners and is a recommended gift selection.

Libera is as close as a boyschoir could ever be to be called a pop sensation but in a way that's exactly what this group is. Since their formation in 1960, the Melodeers, a 125-member Sweet Adelines Chorus, have won the International Championship twice in succession (1997, 1998). Their energetic and vivacious style must also be credited to their redoubtable director, Jim Arns, who also wrote some of the arrangements. "Do You Hear What I Hear?" offers every imaginable variation (echo, contrast motion, swipes, modulation) of the familiar refrain, and sets up the grand finale with a turnaround, pushing the phrasing to make room for a zestful seventh chord and another key change. "Psalm 98/Shalom" begins on a long open note, gradually converging to the dominant; the subsequent section is a rapid fire allegro, broken by a repetitive adagio two-part interlude. Sound unconventional? It is. "Silent Night," "The Christmas Song" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" are among the many traditionals. The Chorus lets loose on "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer."

A nice assortment of Christmas songs from this Sweet Adelines chorus, who medaled at last year's international competition, under the direction of Shirley Kout. The group, who was founded in 1958, offers a nice barbershop rendition "Good King Wenceslas"; they toy with the familiar refrain and resolve it in an unexpected way. Other songs include "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," "Dormi, Dormi" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas."

We had the pleasure recently of experiencing a ten-minute set by Bay Area 8-man a cappella ensemble Musaic at the Harmony Sweeps Bay Area Regional in San Francisco and are happy to hear more of their tight, joyous harmonies in this Christmas collection, "Christmas with Musaic." 17 songs, and our favorites include deeply spiritual songs like Handl's "O Magnum Mysterium," Paul Manz' "E'en So Lord Jesus, Quickly Come," Burt Hudson's lovely "Some Children See Him," Rene Clausen's "Set Me A Seal" and the haunting 13th century plainsong "Of the Father's Love Begotten;" as well as carols like "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Jingle Bells," "Christmas Song," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "Winter Wonderland," "Go Frosty Go," "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," the traditional English drinking song "Landlord Fill the Flowing Bowl" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." In 1999 Naturally Seven had been singing together as a group only a short time when they won the NYC Harmony Sweeps Regionals, then stunned the a cappella world by winning the National Finals in San Rafael. Let It Snow finds New York Voices - Kim Nazarian, Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader and Peter Eldridge - celebrating a host of traditional and sacred holiday classics as well as secular favorites.
