We love these collections of authentic, seldom-heard Doo Wop from Collectables Records, who find original street-corner a cappella groups like The Five Boroughs (actually seven guys), put them in a recording studio and present their sweet harmonies for all of us to enjoy! When we think of "sister" groups, the Boswells in the 30s, Andrews in the 40s and McGuires in the 50s are the best known, but of all the others the Dinnings were the next best-known and loved. Farmer and Mrs. John Dinning of Wichita, OK, raised 9 children, all but one of which went into a music career. Twins Jean and Ginger and older sister Lou began their career in 1935 performing with brother Ace's orchestra, and continued in one form or another up into the 1960s. Their biggest hit was "Buttons and Bows" from the Bob Hope and Jane Russell movie "Paleface." Buddy Clark, Perry Como, Kate Smith, Ozzie Nelson, Tennessee Ernie Ford and many others appeared with or recorded with the girls. This is a 2-CD set, and prolific is not a strong enough word: 24 hits on the first disc and 28 on the second (all big band accompanied). It's fascinating to listen to the Sisters turn a chestnut like "Sentimental Gentleman From Georgia" into their own love story, or apply their bright, cheery, sexy sound to might-have-been hits like "Lolita Lopez" and "Love On A Greyhound Bus." On every level the Dinnings deliver sheer entertainment with the best of them, and the hits just keep on coming - highly recommended!

The centerfold of the liner notes for this CD is a montage of more than a dozen Lettermen album covers. The rest of the notes has some nice color pictures of the trio, and a simple list of the 23 "best of" songs, beginning with "The Way You Look Tonight," recorded in February of 1961 (which reached #13 on the pop charts), and ending chronologically with "If You Feel the Way I Do," recorded in August, 1975. In between are consistently popular (all accompanied) romantic "slow dance" songs, "When I Fall In Love" (#7 on the charts), "Come Back Silly Girl" (#17), "Silly Boy" (#81), "Theme from A Summer Place" (#16), "Sealed with a Kiss," "Medley: Goin' Out of My Head/Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" (#7), "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" (#44), "Hurt So Bad" (#12) and John Lennon's "Love" (#42). Merry Macs : Mairzy Doats   

The Merry Macs first formed as a trio in themid-1920s by the 3 McMichael brothers, baritone Ted and tenors Judd and Joe. After touring with bandleader Joe Haymes, in 1930 they added vocalist Cheri McKay (replaced by Helen Carroll in 1938), and began a 40+ year career recording, touring with swing bands like Glenn Miller's, and appearing on radio, television and in several movies. Coming in second at Anaheim, '99 - Platinum's first year in competition - they generated excitement before the first note was sung, by virtue of their pedigree. The lead, Joe Connelly, and the baritone, Tony DeRosa, were both in the mighty Keepsake, 1992's Championship Quartet. Well, that said, we expected state-of-the-art arrangements, coupled with sizzling performances, and "Be Our Guest" meets the challenge. Most of the material is outside the formal barbershop idiom, with great songs, such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "I'm Beginning To See The Light" and "What'll I Do" representative selections. The tags, of course, are stunning, with special mention going to "Who Will Buy" and the title track - what lung power. If it's subtleties you prefer, "Memories Of You," written by Eubie Blake, has harmonies layered so closely that the voices move as one - complete symmetry. The note placement and phrasing of the "Jimmy Webb Medley," arranged by Jim Clancy, allows the tonality of each voice within the harmony to blossom fully into a resplendent bouquet.

From the 2013 International Queens of Harmony comes a wonderful recording of adroitly arranged and exquisitely sung standards and classics. In 2001 Bob Ahlander, one of Vocal Point's founding members (in 1991) returned to BYU as faculty director of Vocal Point, directing the group in performances at several venues at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, to the semifinals at the International Championships of Collegiate A Cappella," and wowed the audience at the 13rd Annual A Cappella Summit in San Rafael. "Standing Room Only" is a polished, confident CD for this 9-man collegiate group, of 15 beautifully arranged pieces in different musical styles. From Contemporary pop (Maroon 5's "Harder to Breathe," Phil Collins' "Strangers Like Me," Eve 6's "Promise"), to Classic Pop ("Runaround Sue," "The Way You Look Tonight," "Ain't No Sunshine"), to Contemporary Christian ("He Is Born," "Primarily Vocal Point" Medley), to Bluegrass ("O Brother, Where Art Thou? Medley") to traditional Gospel ("Be Still, My Soul," and the bonus track "12 Days of Christmas"), this is all bright, spirited, fun music. Vocal Six : Why Dance   

This 1994 recording shows the Swedish sextet developing their own writing skills, and singing in Swedish on five tracks. Their sound is a forceful melding of both jazz and contemporary, with neither idiom gaining the upper hand. "Sensuella Isabella" features an explosive vocal guitar, while actual guitar guests, along with harmonica, on the ambling, roadhouse "Tomma Ramar Blues." "Bohemian Rhapsody," augmented by the "Bohemian Choir," duplicates the original vocal arrangement closely, and maintains the song's energy capably throughout, with plump, thickly-textured chordal backing. Close, vertical harmonies dominate "The Way You Look Tonight' and "Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring," allowing the tonalities to blossom with rich color.

The voices of Ascension sing new choral arrangements of favorite Kern songs - in styles ranging from swinging Browdway (I Won't Dance; Can't Help Singing) to a timeless classical tone (All The Things You Are; Smoke Gets in Your Eyes). Formed in the Spring of 2002, all-male Westminster began with 15 members, whose average age was 20. Since then the ensemble has grown to over 50 members and gone on to capture the SPEBSQSA Far Western District Chorus Championship in 2003 and 2005, as well as placing 2nd in the 2006 International Chorus Contest. With an average age in the mid-20s, Westminster is the youngest chorus ever to grace the International Stage. This album is a "best-of" grouping of the group's "Collected Works," including two live cuts from the 2004 Internationals, "Shine" and "So Long Mother;" and "The Way You Look Tonight" and "South Rampart Street Parade" from the 2005 FWD Contest. Also included is a pair of live cuts from the quartet OC Times--"Come Fly with Me" and "Good Luck Charm." Other winners are "Great Day," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Bright Was the Night" and bonus track "Ave Maria." Westminster has a powerful sound, smooth and richly harmonic, and we can tell from this recording and the liner notes photos that they put on a dynamic, fun show.
