"The Christmas Song" (commonly subtitled "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" or, as it was originally subtitled, "Merry Christmas to You") is a classic Christmas song written in 1945 by Robert Wells and Mel Torme. According to Tormé, the song was written during a blistering hot summer. In an effort to "stay cool by thinking cool", the most-performed (according to BMI) Christmas song was born. "I saw a spiral pad on his (Wells's) piano with four lines written in pencil", Tormé recalled. "They started, 'Chestnuts roasting..., Jack Frost nipping..., Yuletide carols..., Folks dressed up like Eskimos.' Bob didn't think he was writing a song lyric. He said he thought if he could immerse himself in winter he could cool off. Forty minutes later that song was written. I wrote all the music and some of the lyrics."

"Cool Yule," their first holiday-themed recording, will add to their legend. Greg Volk arranged several songs, including "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch," (sung by bass Joel Rutherford, who also contributed two arrangements). Two Beach Boys scores, "Auld Lang Syne" and "Little Saint Nick," and a Mervyn Warren (of Take 6) chart, "The First Noel," show the quartet's burgeoning versatility, and it sounds great. For those listeners who prefer Acoustix to stay close to their barbershop origins, the locked-in chords of "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" and "Mary Had A Baby" will be a treat. About half accompanied in swinging big band style. Songlist: Cool Yule, Silver Bells, You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch, The Christmas Song, Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells, Happy Holidays / Holiday Season Medley, The First Noel, Pine Cones and Holly Berries Medley, Little Saint Nick, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Mary Had a Baby, Auld Lang Syne Bach Choir : Colors of Christmas - John Rutter John Rutter conducts the Bach Choir and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in what is surely the finest new recoding of Christmas carols this year. Rutter is a composer, conductor and arranger and he brings all of that to these high holiday gems. Most of the carols are very well known, though in the arrangements of Rutter they sound completely fresh. There are some new carols here - Rutter's own 'Riu Riu Chiu' (the sounds a nightingale makes) and 'The Colours of Christmas' - and some new approaches to old ones. The main factor that makes this such a perfect selection of holiday music is the free intermixing of religious carols with contemporary Christmas songs. Songlist: Ding Dong! Merrily On High, The Colours Of Christmas, In Dulci Jubilo, What Is This Lovely Fragrance?, Away In A Manger, Hodie Christus Natus Est, Riu Riu Chiu, I Wonder As I Wander, Star Carol, Once In Royal David's City, Silent Night, In The Bleak Midwinter, Gabriel's Message, Fanfare - O Come, All Ye Faithful, O Holy Night, A New Year Carol, Joy To The World, Sleigh Ride, Deck The Hall, The Christmas Song, The Twelve Days Of Christmas, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Fanfare - Hark! The Herald Angels Sing Ball In The House : Home For Christmas Their second Christmas CD featuring classics, forgotten carols, and some of their favorite soulful holiday tunes. Get down and get in the holiday spirit like you never have with this must have for the season!new sale Songlist: This Christmas, Do You Hear What I Hear?, I'll Be Home For Christmas, O Holy Night, The Christmas Song, Balulalow, O Come All Ye Faithful, Happy Holidays To You Big Chicken Chorus : We Need A Little Christmas Formed in 1986 by a group of guys who got together to sing barbershop in somebody's basement, the BCC has now grown to over 100 members, the largest barbershop chorus in the Southeast. The group has medaled in SPEBSQSA'S International Chorus Competition, placing as high as 3rd in 1999. They are joined by barbershop stars Fred, Riptide, Atlanta Power Company, Scruffy Murphy's and Mary Selano. 11 songs, from the title tune, "Silent Night" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town;" to "Beautiful Savior," "Sleigh Ride," "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear/First Noel/Joy To The World Medley" and "May The Good Lord Bless You and Keep You." The addition of the guest artists allows many solos and delightful variations in the sound of these classic Christmas tunes. We also liked the cover art of Santa's sleigh being pulled by eight extra-large chickens-"We Need" is one of the best barbershop Christmas CDs we've heard! Songlist: We Need A Little Christmas, Silent Night, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Happy Holidays / The Holiday Season Medley, Christmas Time Is Here, Beautiful Savior, Sleigh Ride, Gesu Bambino, The Christmas Song, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear / The First Noel / Joy to the World, May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You The Blenders : Nog Hurry, quick! Look at what the Santa's little helpers have been up to this year! It's hard to believe that these four young men from Minnesota have transfused these familiar holiday chestnuts with such inspiration and wonder, but indeed they have. "Let It Snow" takes as it's initial premise a Polynesian tiki lounge rhythm - already different - and then takes the cheery melody headlong into a ninth chord resolution! This CD is trimmed with so many gorgeous decorations that it improves the more one hears it, revealing subtleties that delight upon discovery. The creativity just saturates every song, whether as a distinctive rhythmic variation or unexpected countermelody, but always integrated into the whole (by the way, the group produced and arranged "Nog" themselves). In terms of intonation and blend, the Blenders (coinciding with their choice of name), are the best in the business: listen to "Do You Hear What I Hear" as just one excellent example. It's perfectly calibrated, the senses reveling in the purity of sound. Contemporary a cappella at its best. Songlist: The Christmas Song, Do You Hear What I Hear, Let It Snow, The First Noel, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, The Little Drummer Boy, Angels We Have Heard On High, Christmas Time Is Here, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Silent Night The Blenders : Holiday Best This 2004 releases is a compilation of their other two Christmas recording ("Nog" and "When It Snows") plus a new bonus track"I'll Be Home For Christmas" Songlist: Carol of the Bells, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas, Do You Hear What I Hear, When It Snows, Hark The Herald Angels Sing, The Christmas Song, The First Noel, Pure Imagination / White Christmas, Walkin' in a WInter Wonderland, Angels We Have Heard On High, One Small Child/We Three Kings, O Come All Ye Faithful, Tiny Little Christmas, Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town, Silent Night, I'll Be Home For Christmas Cambridge Singers : Christmas Star Recorded in 1981 shortly after the Cambridge Singers formation, "Christmas Star" then quickly disappeared, as the master tapes were lost. However, the original digital version was found in 1996. Therefore, the Cambridge Singers first Christmas release can once again be heard. Directed by John Rutter, whose standard of taste and excellence is of legendary repute, this multivoice classical ensemble has a pure and weightless tone and broad dynamic range, from pianissimo to forte. With arrangements also by Rutter, the carols are mostly familiar, such as "I Wander As I Wander," "Ding Dong! Merrily On High" and "What Child Is This," but there are a few rarities: "O Little One Sweet," and "Twas In The Moon Of Wintertime." Songlist: Good Christian Men, Rejoice, I Wonder As I Wander, All My Heart This Night Rejoices, Silent Night, Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming, Ding Dong! Merrily On High, Three Kings Of Orient, How Great Our Joy, Angels We Have Heard On High, Joy To The World, Away In A Manger, Un Flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle, God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, What Child Is This?, 'Twas In The Moon Of Winter Time, O Little One Sweet, Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Away In A Manger, Rise Up, Shepherd, And Follow, The Christmas Song, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, O Come, All Ye Faithful Cantabile - The London Quartet : Christmas with Cantabile Founded as an a cappella group at Cambridge and one of our favorite British male quartets, Cantabile's pure, bright, spirited harmonies have won them many fans over the years. With most arrangements done by the group, we could expect some of the group's trademark humor, which comes in spades on their a cappella "Twelve Days of Christmas," featuring silly and rude barnyard sound effects that underline the absurd problems associated with having an impossibly generous "true love." Other favorites are the spirited, a cappella "Gaudete!," a romantic "Winter Wonderland," a very Bing Crosby-like take on "White Christmas," the lovely a cappella "Wexford Carol" and "Coventry Carol," "The Jimmy Brown Song," which has added lyrics which may or may not be tongue-in-cheek; and a Doo-Wop "Lonely This Christmas," (ditto). Tom Lehrer's quintessentially sarcastic "A Christmas Carol" has no such ambiguity, nor does the silly "The Carol Singers." "Silent Night," also sung in German a la The Comedian Harmonists," one of Cantabile's favorite influences, attempts to make amends for the craziness, but the surprising musical collage "Carol" and the bonus track "Les Trois Cloches," which is, as far as we can tell, "Jimmy Brown" sung sweetly and dramatically in French, are certainly non-traditional and may be parodies. There is piano accompaniment on several cuts. "Christmas with Cantabile" is a beautifully sung and arranged, eclectic, often silly and unexpected collection that we totally enjoyed, and we bet that you will too! Songlist: Winter Wonderland, The Little Road to Bethlehem, Gaudete!, Tua Bethlem Dref, The Twelve Days of Christmas, Wexford Carol, White Christmas, Susser die Glocken nie Klingen, Coventry Carol, The First Mercy, The Jimmy Brown Song, Lonely This Christmas, A Christmas Carol, The Christmas Song, The Carol Singers, Silent Night, Carol, Les Trois Cloches Children's Chorus of Washington : 2003 - 2004 Season The continued success of the Children's Chorus of Washington has brought us yet another wonderful CD featuring their Concert Chorus and Treble Chorus, under the direction of founder, Joan Gregoryk. This CD includes recordings of both their Holiday and Spring Concerts. You are sure to smile when you listen to these children sing. Songlist: Psalm 150, Hatikva (The hope), Hava Nageela, What Sweeter Music, Ding Dong! Merrily On High, Zither Carol, Far Away in Bethlehem Town, Hark! The Herald Angel Sing, O Come All Ye Faithful, The Christmas Song, Domine Fili unigenite, Gloria, Et In Terra pax, Laudamus Te, Domine Deus, Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, Cum Sancto Spiritu, The Lord Is My Shepherd, Give Praise With joyful Song, Suo-Gan, Opening Chorus from "the Bartered Bride", Ride On, King Jesus, Run Children Run Collegium Regale : Christmas with The incomparable sound of the men of King's College is unleashed on everything from chant to Rudolph, the Red-nosed Reindeer. Close harmonies, impeccable tuning, and perfect programming make this a "must-have" CD for connoisseurs of the very best in choral singing. 22 songs: Handl's "Ante luciferum gentus," Byrd's "O magnum mysterium," "Puer natus est," "Ecce advenit," "The Coventry Carol," "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen," "There is no rose of such virtue," "Beata es, Virgo Maria," "Quem vidistis, pastores?," "Hodie Christus natus est"... the Scholars make each song a lovely gem. Songlist: Ante lucifeum genitus, O Magnum Mysterium, Puer natus est, Ecce advenit, Coventry Carol, Es ist ein Ros entsprungen, There is no rose of such virtue, Beata es, Virgo Maria, Quem vidistis pastores, Hodie Christus natus est, Once In Royal David's Coty, Deck The Hall, Silent Night, Ding Dong Merrily On High, Hark! the hearld angel sing, O Come All Ye Faithful, Rudelph the red-nosed reindeer, White Christmas, Wonderful Christmastide, The Christmas Song, The Twelve Days of Christmas, We Wish You A Merry Christmas The Drifters : Winter Wonderland We have always loved recordings by the Drifters, and have enjoyed their live performances even more. "Winter Wonderland" is an all-accompanied collection of 10 soulful Doo-Wop Christmas tunes: "Christmas Just Ain't Christmas," "Winter Wonderland," The Beach Boys' wonderful "Little Saint Nick," "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "Please Come Home for Christmas," "The Christmas Song," "Silent Night," "O Holy Night" and "Auld Lang Syne." No frills, no extensive liner notes, just some great fun, romantic tunes to dance to, enjoy and brighten up your holiday season! Songlist: Christmas Just Ain't Christmas, Winter Wonderland, Little Saint Nick, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Please Come Home for Christmas, The Christmas Song, Silent Night, O Holy Night, Auld LangSyne Duprees : Christmas with the Duprees Christmas with the Duprees is an excellent showcase for the group's trademark doo-wop harmonies, with lush renditions of "The Christmas Song," "O Holy Night" and "Auld Lang Syne." The Duprees are Richie Rosato, Phil Granito, James Spinelli, Tony Testa, Michael J. Arnone. Songlist: Going Home Medley, Give Me Your Love For Christmas, Secret Of Christmas, Little Christmas Tree, It's Christmas Once Again, Marshmallow World, Merry Christmas, Darling, The Christmas Song, O Holy Night, Christmas Time All Year, It's Going To Be A Merry Christmas, Auld Lang Syne Eclipse 6 : Three Kings The six young men of Eclipse first met in a singing group at Utah State University. Campus performances of pop covers led to their first album, 2001's "Once." They won the NW Regional Harmony Sweeps and were very impressive at the 2001 Finals. After performing a featured number in the Opening opening of the 2002 Winter Olympics, and releasing their second album, "Think Twice," they won the 2002 Rocky Mountain Sweeps Regional. "Three Kings" is a rich, innovative Christmas CD that features 11 songs that features stunning arrangements, many of them by group member Patrick Rose. There are 3 very nice original tunes, "This Year," "Room in the Inn" and the sweet "Lullaby." Strong vocal percussion on the spirited "Three Kings," "Drummer Boy," and "Go Tell It." Smooth, ringing harmonies on "The First Noel" and "What Child Is This?" A bluesy, jazzy "The Christmas Song" and "Silent Night" are last. One of the best of the year! Highly recommended. Songlist: Three Kings, The First Noel, What Child Is This?, This Year, Drummer Boy, Lullaby, Go Tell It, Room in the Inn, Hark, The Herald Angels Sing, The Christmas Song, Silent Night Four Shadow : Flake Having just finished raving about Minneapolis-based Four Shadow's "Live" CD, we were pleased to receive the ir third recording ("Where Have You Been" was the excellent first), a Christmas CD called simply "Flake." We needed only to listen to"Christmas Soup," which begins innocently as "12 Days of Christmas" and morphs into a surprising musical sampler of a dozen tunes, to know that these 4 young guys have the talent and arrangements to sing with anyone in Contemporary a cappella. 10 songs, from a very funky "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and a wonderfully slimy "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," to traditional covers of "O Holy Night," "The Christmas Song," "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and a fine classical rendition of the sacred song "Ave Maria." Other standouts are a sweet original, "That Time of Year," where you'll swear you're listening to Rockapella, "Blue Christmas," with funny, desperate mumbling by "Elvis," and amazing, driving vocal percussion on "The Little Drummer Boy." The guys toss little treats like unexpected samples and vocal horns into our bulging stockings. "Flake," another impressive effort by Four Shadow, is a Christmas winner! Songlist: Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch, O Holy Night, That Time of Year, The Christmas Song, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, Blue Christmas, The Little Drummer Boy, Ave Maria Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : 'Twas The Night Before Christmas For many years Waring and his Pennsylvanians entertained America with radio and tv broadcasts, as well as stage shows and a multitude of recordings. Culled from the Waring archives, the spontaneity and energy of these live recordings comes through from the first cut. Featured are famous Pennsylvanian soloists and the incomparable Waring Glee Club on these 21 wonderful (all big band accompanied) songs of Christmas. We can't really pick favorites here. The jazzy "Jingle Bells" perhaps, or the Teen Trio's solo on "Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer" that segues into manic sound-effect silliness." Certainly the "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow Medley," Frank Davis' soulful solo on "One for the Little Bitty Baby," and Jack Best and Gordon Goodman on "Twas the Night Before Christmas." Oh, and we have to include Jane Wilson's solos on "Away In A Manger" and "Cantique De Noel" (Oh Holy Night). The bottom line is, this is great, classic entertainment by, in our opinion, the premier choral organization of all time. Christmas music just doesn't get any better than this! Songlist: Opening: I Hear Music, Jingle Bells, Christmas Was Meant For Children, Santa Claus is Comin' To Town, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, One For The Little Bitty Baby, Medley (Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow, The Sleigh, Winter Wonderland), White Christmas, The Christmas Song, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas, Medley (Adeste Fidelis, The First Noel, Carol Of The Bells), Beautiful Savior, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentleman, The Twelve Days Of Christmas, Rise Up Shepard And Foller, Oh Gathering Clouds, Behold That Star, Medley Of English Carols (Suzzani, Coventry Carol, Gloucestershire Wassail), Away In A Manger, Cantique De Noel (Oh Holy Night), Silent Night/Come Unto Him, Closing Sleep Gents : Follow That Star After their first CD for Channel Classics: The Gentlemen of the Chapel Royal, with English Polyphony of the Renaissance, now present themselves in a completely different guise: on this Christmas CD they give you a glimpse of their taste for the lighter styles. You will hear a wide selection of the personal favourites of their singers, such as Follow that star, A Wonderful Christmastime, and Jingle Bell Rock. In addition to other popular Christmas Ballads from the American Songbook, such as Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas and White Christmas, they have put a new spin on a couple of traditional carols, like Silent Night and Es ist ein Ros entsprungen. Most of the arrangements were written especially for The Gents. Songlist: Follow That Star, Gaudete Christus Est Natus, Es Ist Ein Ros Entsprungen, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, White Christmas, Walking in the Air, Wonderful Christmastime, Hijo de la Luna, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Just Another Star, Jingle Bell Rock, Let It Snow, The Christmas Song, Sleighride, Winter Wonderland, Silent Night Heartland Men's Chorus : A Song For Christmas HMC's first holiday recording, this wonderful CD is being re-released in 2005 in celebration of the Chorus' 20th anniversary after having been out-of-print for several years. Conducted by Reuben M. Reynolds, III. Songlist: A Winter Triptych, Din Don Merrily On High, O Holy Night, Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head, Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, Gloria, The Christmas Song, Silent Night, Holy Night, The Holly and the Ivy, A New Year's Song, Water Under Snow is Weary, Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine, White Christmas, A Song For Christmas Houston Tidelanders : It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year The 93-strong Houston Tidelanders, with special guest performers The Houston Horizon Chorus, Symmetry and Presto!, bring us a fine, generous helping of Christmas classics just in time for the holidays! The 2001 SPEBSQSA Southwestern District Champs, the Tidelanders have been winning SPEBSQSA trophies since 1969, and it shows. 14 songs here, some of our favorites are the title tune, "Carol of the Drum," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "Christmas Spiritual Medley," "Jingle Bell Rock," "Winter Swing Medley" and "O Holy Night." The rich, full sound of the Tidelanders contrasts nicely with the soloists and guest artists. Merry Christmas from Texas! Songlist: It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Happy Holidays / The Holiday Season Medley, Carol of the Drum, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, The Christmas Song, Santa Baby, When the Toy Soldiers March on Parade, Holiday Blessing / Jingle Bells Medley, Christmas Spiritual Medley, Jingle Bell Rock, A Special Night, Joy to the World / O Come All Ye Faithful Medley, Winter Swing Medley, O Holy Night The Idea of North : This Christmas We will never forget the way these two men and two women from Australia, members of Vocal Jazz group The Idea of North, whose reputation as the best a cappella group in Australia preceded them, strode onto the stage of the 2003 Harmony Sweeps National Finals in San Rafael. They would be the very last to perform a 12-minute set, and the regional winners from around the country, many of whom had performed to standing ovations by the sold-out audience, had set the bar incredibly high. But their first sweet notes were a revelation, and after ION's own roaring standing O, it was obvious to all who the audience favorite and National Champions were. There are 12 tunes here, some of our favorites are a bluesy, finger-popping take on "The Christmas Song," "Christmas Medley," which blends "Once in Royal David's City," "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen" and "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" with innovative arrangements; a gentle lullaby new to our ears, "The Silver Stars are In the Sky" touched and moved us; "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, a big-band accompanied celebration; two Salsa band-accompanied versions of "Mary's Boy Child," one featuring James Morrison, and a pair of lovely, soaring, orchestra-accompanied songs, "Candlelight Carol" and "A Child is Born." The Pop-flavored title tune is also new to us, a joyous, Jazz band-accompanied greeting to the season. The a cappella "Angel" with its powerful "in the arms of the angel" chorus underscores the probable meanness of the nativity. We hold The Idea of North in a special place in our hearts and relate to "This Christmas" as a gift from this extraordinary quartet! Songlist: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, The Christmas Song, Candlelight Carol, Mary's Boy Child, This Christmas, Angel, The Silver Stars are in the Sky, Once in Royal David's City, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Hark The Herald Angels Sing, A Child Is Born, Poverty, I'll Be Home For Christmas Knudsen Brothers : Yuletide The Knudsens ascended through the a cappella ranks as a barbershop group, but are now firmly ensconced as pre-eminent contemporary artists. Their long-awaited "Yuletide" combines the seamless blend of barbershop with percussion-rich production of contemporary a cappella. The familiar "White Christmas" and "Christmas Song" are nicely arranged, with plush chords and smooth modulations. The walking bass of "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" sets up a swing feel, while the CD's closer, a "Christmas Hop" mix of the same song, is hip and shows the Knudsens cutting loose, incorporating techno effects into the tune. The tonal interplay of the pitches resonating off of each other in "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is inspiring and one of the most beautiful arrangements of this carol that we've heard. Uncle Daniel Knudsen (of the Mormon Tabenacle Choir) takes a solo turn on the classical art song "Gesu Bambino." This CD will appeal to a variety of listeners and is a recommended gift selection. Songlist: It's Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, The Christmas Song, I'll Be Home For Christmas, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Gesu Bambino, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, In The Bleak Midwinter, White Christmas, Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree The Manhattan Transfer : The Christmas Album Produced by Johnny Mandel, who also arranged several songs, this orchestrated recording is as elegant and uptown as Fifth Avenue and the Rockefeller Center. A special guest appearance by Tony Bennett, singing "The Christmas Song" from an arrangement by Gene Puerling, adds extra sparkle, but every carol is meticulously produced. The big band glamour of the "Happy Holiday/Holiday Season Medley" rings all the bells, whereas " A Christmas Love Song" is quietly contemplative. "Snowfall" is arranged by both Puerling and Mandel, and "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" by Puerling; both are as ethereal and heavenly as a choir of angels. Songlist: Snowfall, Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow,, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town/ Santa Man (Medley), The Christmas Song, Silent Night, Holy Night, Caroling, Caroling, Happy Holiday / the Holiday Season, A Christmas Love Song, It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, Have Yourself a Mery Little Christmas, Goodnight Marcoux Corner : Tinsel Minneapolis, MN-based all-male Contemporary quartet Marcoux Corner brings us a beautifully-crafted Christmas album of 10 tunes, all with cutting-edge arrangements by members of the group. Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song," "Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells," the two traditional carols "Oh, Come, Oh Come Emmanuel" and "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," the pop favorites "Frosty the Snowman," "Christmas Time is Here," "Baby It's Cold Outside" (featuring Nancy Harms) and "What are You Doing New Year's Eve," both by Frank Loesser. Our final favorite is the very funny "Huge on the Luge," written by the possibly fictional Moxy Fruvous. "Tinsel" is a sweet-harmonied, big fun Christmas collection from Josh, David, Kevin and Brent, our friends at Marcoux Corner! Songlist: The Christmas Song, Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, Christmas Time is Here, O Come, O Come. Emmanuel, Baby, It's Cold Outside, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Huge on the Luge, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? Masters Of Harmony : Caroling, Caroling This multiple gold-medal award winning chorus is consistently delightful. Directed by Dr. Greg Lyne, their sound is immense, yet compact. With marvelous adaptations of favorites such as "Joy To The World" (where the use of dynamics, stepwise motion and rhythmic variation between voice-parts creates a surprising excitement), or the "Christmas Waltz Medley" (featuring "My Favorite Things"), the Masters of Harmony are never predictable. The "Gift Carol," a Catalonian folk carol with a delicate and exquisitely harmonized melody in 3/4, is a highlight. Songlist: Caroling, Caroling, Joy to the World World-Adeste Fidelis, Gift Carol, O Holy Night, Christmas Waltz Medley, Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, We Want to Wish You a Merry Christmas, Feast of Lights, Ring de Christmas Bells, Carol of the Bells, The Little Drummer Boy, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, The Christmas Song, Coventry Carol, Silver Bells, Silent Night, Auld Lang Syne Melodeers : It's a Wrap Since their formation in 1960, the Melodeers, a 125-member Sweet Adelines Chorus, have won the International Championship twice in succession (1997, 1998). Their energetic and vivacious style must also be credited to their redoubtable director, Jim Arns, who also wrote some of the arrangements. "Do You Hear What I Hear?" offers every imaginable variation (echo, contrast motion, swipes, modulation) of the familiar refrain, and sets up the grand finale with a turnaround, pushing the phrasing to make room for a zestful seventh chord and another key change. "Psalm 98/Shalom" begins on a long open note, gradually converging to the dominant; the subsequent section is a rapid fire allegro, broken by a repetitive adagio two-part interlude. Sound unconventional? It is. "Silent Night," "The Christmas Song" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" are among the many traditionals. The Chorus lets loose on "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer." Songlist: Jingle Bell Rock, Silent Night, The Christmas Song, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer/ Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer Medley, Coventry Carol, A Holly Jolly Christmas, Do You hear What I Hear?, Carol Of The Bells, Psalm 98/ Shalom, The Christmas Song, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Christmas Chopstix, Jingle Bells, Hallelujah Chorus Michigan State Children's Choir : What Sweeter Music "Music" is an excellent collection of Christmas Songs by Conductor and Founder Stollak's sweet-singing MSUCC, all lightly piano (and sometimes flute) accompanied. Classics like "I Saw Three Ships," "Bring A Torch, Jeanette Isabella," "Wassail Song," "Pat-a-Pan," "Ding Dong, Merrily on High" and "White Christmas" segue nicely into lesser-known tunes like Paul Carey's "A Cradle Song," Nancy Cobb's "Hodie," and Eleanor Daley's title tune. John Rutter's "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day," Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" and Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song" are icing on a very tasty Christmas cake! Songlist: I Saw Three Ships, Bring A Torch, Jeannette, Isabella, A Cradle Song, La Bonne Nouvelle, Wassail Song, Hodie, Cantate Domino, Pat-A-Pan, Ding Dong! Merrily On High, What Sweeter Music, Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, White Christmas, The Christmas Song, On Christmas Morn The Mighty Echoes : Doo Wop Around The Christmas Tree One of our longtime favorite Doo-Wop a cappella male quartets, the Echoes apply their "simple and profound" sound, as "Two a Half Men" writer Eddie Gorodefsky describes it, to 11 Christmas chestnuts: "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," "The "Christmas Song," "Winter Wonderland," "White Christmas," the plaintive "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve," "Christmas In New Orleans," "Blue Christmas," "O Holy Night," and finishing with John Lennon/ Yoko Ono's "Happy Xmas {War is Over)." It adds up to a yummy, rich, deep-bass, vocal Christmas pudding to enjoy again and again! Songlist: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, The Christmas Song, Winter Wonderland, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, White Christmas, What Are You Doing New Year's Eve, Christmas In New Orleans, Blue Christmas, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), O Holy Night, Happy Xmas (War Is Over) Mormon Tabernacle Choir : Joy To The World A Christmas classics reissued and remastered with three bonus tracks. Songlist: Joy to the World, The First Noel, Deck the Hall, Carol of the Bells, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, O Come All Ye Faithful, O, Holy Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Here We Come A-Caroling, O Tannenbaum, Silent Night, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, The Christmas Song, Hallelujah Chorus Moscow Boys Choir : Christmas Around The World This internationally renowned boys choir performs Christmas music from around the world. Led by Ninel Kamburg, listeners are transported to far away places as the choir showcases classics. Featured on this disc are such favorites as "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," "Jingle Bells" and their beautiful rendition of "Silent Night" plus moving classical standards as Bach/Gounod's "Ave Maria." This group will warm your hearts this holiday season. Songlist: The Christmas Song, God Is With us, The Little Drummer Boy, O Tannenbaum, Carol of the Bagpipers, Masters In This Hall, Ave Maria, Le Bonne Nouvelle, Fum! Fum! Fum!, Maoz Tsur, Christmas In Killamey, Silent Night, Feliz Navidad, Jingle Bells, We Wish You A Merry Christmas (Traditional) Motet Singers : Sing Noel The Motet Singers are ten female vocalists who began in 1982 as a vocal sight-reading group under the direction of Hannelore Good. They sing a cappella music from classical, folk and popular genres, ranging from medieval to contemporary, and are known for their pure sound, seamless blending of voices and the eclectic variety of their music. There are 20 tracks here, from a fine "Salve Regina" by Javier Busto and several other contemporary and 20th century pieces, to short sacred works by Renaissance composers Morales and Palestrina, to some very nice 19th and 20th century arrangements of Spanish carols from various periods. Some of our favorites: "A la Puerta del Cielo," "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree" and "Ave Maria." There are drums on at least one cut. Everything relates to the Nativity theme, and there is a nice mix of unfamiliar winners with familiar favorites. An exceptional, beautifully sung CD! Songlist: Sactus, O My Dear Heart, Three Spanish Carols, Ya Viene La Vieja, A La Puerta del Cielo, Riu, Riu, Chiu, Deck the Hall, White Christmas, Ave Maria, Lullay my liking, Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, O Magnum Mysterium, Maria durch ein' Dornwald ging, Over the Hill Maria Went, A La Nanita Nana, Good King Wenceslas, The Christmas Song, The Holly and the Ivy, The Three Kings, Some Children See Him, Salve Regina Northwest Boychoir : 'Tis the Season Released in November 1999, Northwest Boychoir and Vocalpoint!
