Mary Goetze presents here a setting of the most familiar variant of this traditional folk ballad, "Scarborough Fair," in which two lovers make impossible requests of each other. The texture shifts from homophonic to imitative counterpoint. Brief dissonances created and resolved by stepwise progression of the accompanying voices reflect the bittersweetness of the text. "Hold the Wind," a simple yet stirring melody in the mixolydian mode, was sung by a blacksmith. The simple harmonization highlights the beauty of the melody. "Shenandoah" is set with very simple ideas which complement and support the motion of the beautiful melody. The accompanying voices can be learned quickly, for they sing like melodies and progress by step. "Old Joe Clark," a familiar fiddle tune of our American heritage is arranged in a playful setting which captures the flavor of the jocular text.

An arrangement of the classic folk song "Black Is The Color" that reflects the deep dark color of "my true love's hair." Opens with a tenor solo, then develops into a warm, full-textured chorus. "The Lord's Prayer" is a solemn and heartfelt a cappella rendition of the well-known tune. Rich close harmony is employed throughout, which soars to a climax with "for Thine is the kingdom." . An old English folk "Scarborough Fair" song made popular by Simon and Garfunkel arranged with a larger ensemble in mind. Tenor sings the melody, surrounded by soprano/bass pedal point and alto/baritone ostinato lines. It then shifts into different moods, keys and harmonic settings, sensitively corresponding to the lyrics. "My Old Kentucky Home, Good Night" is one of the Stephen Foster evergreens, this arrangement starts with male unison, then develops into a rich close harmony with some twists here and there. Followed by a short baritone solo, it builds up to a beautiful climax with a key change, and a calm, pensive ending. An excellent showcase for a strong small group. "The Water Is Wide" is a ballad to be savored by both singers and audiences. It showcases male and female soloists over a beautiful, haunting background lines, builds up to the tutti section where each part has a moment to shine, then comes to a quiet close with a reprise of the male solo. "Simple Gifts" is an arrangement written for Vox One's album Pure Imagination, this Shaker song is transformed into an ode to the open skies of Africa. Combining a Swahili phrase for "dance and sing" and vowels not commonly used in choral singing, a bed of background lines are laid to carry the melody in 9/8. Its uplifting message comes through strongly as joyous rhythm and harmony is weaved together by each part.

The prototype for what has developed into a twenty-five year career that continues to grow in popularity, this initial 1971 recording hints at the dominion the King's Singers have over an astonishing variety of material. Four tracks are a cappella, the rest accompanied by the Gordon Langford Trio (Langford also arranged five of the songs). Traditionals, such as "Shenandoah, "Cherry Ripe" and "Scarborough Fair" are side-by-side with Gershwin's "Summertime" and Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers." Stylistically, the King's Singers combine formal classical knowledge with the immaculate blend of a barbershop chorus and the personality of English music hall performers appearing on the "Old Grey Whistle Test." No wonder they've stood the test of time!

Seattle, WA-based Northwest Girlchoir provides extraordinary music education and concert experience to 190 girls and young women ages 4-18, who hail from throughout the Puget Sound. Choristers participate in concerts, community events; regional, national and international festivals and tours, touching thousands of audience members with their artistry and critically-acclaimed choral sound. For this live recorded concert at Seattle's Meany Theatre, the ensemble was joined on the last three selections (the traditional European chant and S. African anti-apartheid song "Hope for Resolution," Sarah Hopkins' "Honour the Earth," and Oscar Peterson's "Hymn to Freedom") by over 50 NWGC alumnae and veteran accompanist Dwight Beckmeyer. There are 18 songs here, mostly accompanied by piano, a "best-of" selection from the group's concert performances. John Muehleisen's commissioned piece "Glory! (A History Lesson), Carolyn Jennings' 4-part "Cat and Mouse," the sweet "Manx Lullaby," Bob Chilcott's "Like a Singing Bird," Marta Keen's "Homeward Bound," the traditional Zambian song "Bonse Aba," the English folk song "Scarborough Fair," and the Stephen Hatfield-arranged spiritual "First to Know." The 12 young men who form the '01-'02 version of the Princeton Tigertones are members of more than a great vocal group. It is said that The Tigertones, a tradition at Princeton going back 56 years (a great pic of the '46-'47 version is in the liner notes), have broader appeal than any other boy-band in the world. The Tones have wowed elderly audiences in Palm Beach, teenage schoolgirls in Switzerland, and have performed on the stages of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. This is their 27th biennial album, hence "Old No. 27." There are 18 songs, which reflect their rich heritage. Some of our favorites: Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," Sam the Sham & The Pharoahs' "Little Red Riding Hood," "The Orange Moon," the wonderful reggae tune "Kiss Da Girl," "Runaround Sue," CSNY's "Our House," "Steppin' to the Bad Side," Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair," "Shower the People," and "When Sunny Gets Blue," recorded live. The Tones are having total fun recording "Old No. 27," performing live, or just doing great harmony with their buds, and that's what it's all about!

Reconciliation Singers Voices of Peace : Voices of Peace   

Twenty-strong, mixed-voice RSVP was founded in 2000 by Artistic Director Julie Adams, with the purpose of bringing people together through the arts and giving back to the community. They have presented uplifting and powerful live performances, donating all proceeds to to 15 local charities. RSVP's concerts have supported programs for the elderly, the abused, the neglected, the hungry, the poor, the illiterate and the homeless. Some light accompaniment. We like the chosen purpose of this talented ensemble, and we love their music!

Four different parts of Sacramento (CA) State's dynamic Jazz Studies program, all under the direction of Kerry Marsh, are represented on "It's You," C-Sus, Jazz Singers, Take 6 Repertory Ensemble and a 12-person Rhythm Section, which accompanies most of the 10 tunes. The student personnel of C-Sus changes as the recordings were made in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Favorites here include three written by Kerry Marsh (who also does all the arrangements), the electric "Lee's Summit," moody "Strange New World," and bluenote "So In Love;" the title tune by Kitty Margolis, and two a cappella songs, "Scarborough Fair" and upbeat "I've Got Life." We find ourselves continually impressed by the professionalism, poise and talent of the Sacramento State singers. And we have to credit Director Marsh for the great arrangements and striking original material to be found on these recordings-this is especially true for "It's You!"

Founder of legendary Boston-based Vocal Jazz group Vox One, Yumiko has always been one of our favorite vocalists and arrangers. She has two excellent collections of arrangements in the PAC catalog, "Collection Vol. 1" and "Collection Vol. 2." The Anthology "To Every Thing" is her first solo album, and it includes a piece Yumiko wrote for acoustic guitar for some friends' wedding, "Tsubasa," her arrangement of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes," performed by the Western Wind with Yumiko, and her marvelous arrangements of the English Traditional tunes "Scarborough Fair," "Black is the Color" and the title tune, performed by Boston Jazz Voices. The Western Wind also shines on Yumiko's arrangements of Lionel Bart's "Where Is Love" and Lennon/McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby." Yumiko's classically accompanied arrangement of Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind," her lovely arrangement of Joanie Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," performed by Syncopation; and the Scottish Traditional "Skye Boat Song," performed by Yumiko with the women of the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble, are all favorites. "To Every Thing" is a remarkable collection, highlighting the tremendous vocal, arranging and composing talents of Vocal Jazz master Yumiko!
