The two groups share a love of a cappella classical Christian music, such as Jakob Handl's "O Magnum Mysterium" and "Confirma hoc, Deus;" and spirituals such as Stephen Hatfield's joyous "Heaven Somewhere," and the Moses Hogan-arranged "Ev'ry Time I Feel The Spirit." The Statesmen also love folk music, such as "Loch Lomond," Gwenyth Walker's piano-accompanied "Crossing the Bar," the silly, live "Johnny Schmoker," "Cindy," the powerful, rhythmic African song "Noel," and the Russell Robinson-arranged "Ol' Man River." Finally, to remind us that the Statesmen are a collegiate group, there is a rousing collection of ISU School Songs. It is performed on this recording by the acclaimed jazz singer Jacqueline Dankworth in its chamber-ensemble arrangement. Harvey Brough's 'Walled Garden Suite' for soloist, choir and instrumental quartet was written for Dankworth and first performed on the occasion of the opening of the walled garden at Wingfield Arts in Suffolk. Of the two collections by Bob Chilcott on this CD, 'Fragments from his Dish' is a group of five light-hearted part-songs on the themes of food and drink. The programme concludes with 'The Making of the Drum', settings of words by Barbadian poet Edward Kamau Braithwaite, commissioned from Bob Chilcott by OPMS on the occasion of the choir's twentieth anniversary in 1997. It tells the story of the making of a traditional African drum and is heavily influenced by the style of African tribal music. This rich, powerful, live collection of 23 authentic Spirituals is their 3rd winning recording in the Primarily A Cappella catalog. Some songs are recorded at the Green Room in San Francisco, and the rest at the Oakland Museum. All of our favorites are here, with fresh new arrangements: "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel," "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel," "His Name So Sweet," "Freedom Train," the heartbreaking "Steal Away," "Do Lord, Remember Me," "Elijah Rock," "The Battle of Jericho," "Amazing Grace," "Mary Had a Baby" and many others. Every song a gem, soaring solos, great music, live performance excitement-what could be better? We loved "A Story of Freedom!" Songlist: Lord I Want To Be A Christian, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Ain't That Good News, His Name So Sweet, Freedom Train, Steal Away, Soon And Very Soon, Deep River, Do Lord Remember Me, Great Day, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Chile, Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen, Abide With Me, Elijah Rock, I'm Gonna Sing 'til The Spirit Moves In My Heart, The Battle Of Jericho, Down By The Riverside, Who Is Dat A Yonder, Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit, Amazing Grace, Behold A Star, Mary Had A Baby Power Play : Best Times A "power play" is a hockey term, denoting impact, requiring teamwork, and resulting in an advantage. The first CD, recorded in 1992, by this Michigan quartet certainly embodies these qualities! Ranking as high as seventh in competition, their sound is a pleasure indeed, beginning with the superior tone of lead Michael Slamka. Though a fine ensemble singer, his velvety timbre has a personality that is quite an asset - heard best on "Anytime." This sonority translates across the spectrum, resulting in a mix that is bright, warm and deep. The opening measures of "Stars Fell On Alabama" (arranged by John Bober), are thick like syrup! "The Moment I Saw Your Eyes," "Old Songs Are Just Like Old Friends" and "Through The Years" are particularly fine arrangements - plenty of variety, but never sacrificing the integrity of the harmonic structure. Good stuff. Songlist: I'm Gonna Live Till I Die, The Moment I Saw Your Eyes, Old Songs Are Just Like Old Friends, Anytime, Joshua, Stars Fell On Alabama, Through The Years, Blackeyed Susan Brown, I Miss Mother Most Of All, The Best Times I Ever Had, Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit St. Olaf Choir : Spirituals Of William Dawson William Levi Dawson, born in 1899, was educated at Tuskegee Institute, the Horner Institute of Fine Arts, and the American Conservatory, and wrote his own "Dawson's Negro Folk Symphony" in 1934. He began publishing and recording his arrangements of traditional African-American spirituals in 1955, lovingly recorded here by the acclaimed St. Olaf Choir with Marvis Martin, soprano. Included are "Ain'-a That Good News," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Soon Ah Will Be Done," "In His Care-O," "Hail Mary," "Mary Had A Baby," "Behold The Star," "There Is A Balm In Gilead," "Ev'ry Time I Feel The Spirit," "Steal Away" and "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel." You no doubt have heard the term jubilee singing referring to quartet music coming out of the south in the thirties and forties. It all started on the day of Jubilee, the day the slaves were freed. Striving for education had been an underground pursuit during slavery. One school established for the freed, Fisk College of Nashville, TN, opened six months after the end of the Civil War. In the struggle to save the school from economic collapse, the school's treasurer and music teacher, George L. White, took a group of his students on the road to raise funds in the North. The original repertoire was ballads, arias and a few other popular and choral songs of the day. They went on faith, seemingly doomed to failure, until one day they performed some of their special songs, 'Steal Away' and 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot.' The response was overwhelming. Ultimately the school was saved and the Fisk Jubilee Singers went on to become the first Black international singing stars. This is their music, performed by five very special choral groups.
