A.R. Rahman : Barso Re Barso Re, written by A. R. Rahman and arranged for choir by Ethan Sperry, appeared in the soundtrack of the 2007 film Guru. It is an Indian take on how beautiful it can be to sing in the rain. For percussion, use a beaded gourd shaker, rasp, or tambourine for the upper line and one or more djembes or floor toms for the lower line. A.R. Rahman : Music From the Indian Cinema Jai Ho was written for the 2008 Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire. While this is a British movie, director Tony Boyle wanted to acknowledge Indian tradition. He asked A.R. Rahman to write a song in the style of his music for the Indian cinema to be choreographed and performed during the ending credits. The resulting piece is a victory dance capturing the essence of the movie's story. Balleilakka is a song from the Tamil film Sivaji, which means "The Boss." The text of this piece is a tongue-twister lamenting how traditional Indian culture is being subsumed and listing the speaker's memories of his homeland in increasingly faster syllabic patterns. O Saya was written for the Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire. The song appears at the beginning as we are introduced to just how horrible living conditions are int he slums of India. The lyrics have no meaning, nor does the title. They are just nonsense syllables that form a wail. The melodic patterns are based loosely on the patterns one might hear in the slums as the Muslim call to worship blasts from the minarets, but they are more a call to action than a call to prayer. When people sing this piece, hopefully they will consider taking some action against poverty themselves. Barso Re, written by A. R. He was an innovator of jazz poetry, becoming part of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s. He wrote plays, short stories, novels, and his poetry was widely read. He was also a journalist, columnist and lecturer. The Negro Speaks of Rivers was perhaps his earliest published work, written when only 17 and while travelling by train to Mexico to visit his father. As the train crossed the Mississippi he suddenly began thinking about how rivers had impacted on Negro history, particularly in the fight against slavery. The four rivers mentioned in the poem lent themselves to using musical influences from those particular regions. Songlist: I've Known Rivers, The Congo, The Euphrates, The Mississippi, The Nile Dan Damon : NJALO (Always) "Njalo" is a 16 song glimpse into the world of Christianity as it presently exists in the African tradition. The production of this book was a cross-cultural collaboration between Patrick Matsikenyiri, a Zimbabwan missionary and Dan Damon, who provided very singable, English translations of these songs. Together, they created a volume with a variety of worship expressions, including songs of praise ("Baningyeti Bayawe"), thanksgiving ("Wonai"), invocation ("Mweya Mutsvene Uyai Pano"), and commitment ("Ndai Wona Hama Yakanaka"). These songs also bear the brokeness of Zimbabwean society where so many people live under the burdens of political oppression, economical turmoil, family brokeness, and the scourge of HIV/AIDS. See especially "Zviro Zvacho Zvanyanya." Includes CD. Though treated with a more modern approach, a traditional choir will find this piece to be very approachable as they explore the more intricate, lush harmonies for which Darmon has become well-known contest and festival approved! "That Ever I Saw" - "She is gentle and also wise; of all other she beareth the prize, that ever I saw, to hear her sing, to see her dance!" is a delightful anonymous text, stunningly set in a soft, romantic song by Darmon Meader. This choral work will soon find its way into the repertoire of a cappella treble choirs everywhere. "The Water Is Wide" - Darmon Meader's arrangement of this well-known folk song expertly blends lyricism with jazz. Gorgeous harmonies and solo opportunities abound in this sure-to-please choral. The book, which is accompanied by a disc with recordings of all of the compositions, includes twenty-five of Don Jamison's beloved and imaginative compositions. Jamison has divided his highly-singable and fascinating choral pieces into three sections: shape-note-inspired tunes, three-part songs, and four- and five-part songs. The title of both the book and the first song comes from Isaac Watts' text: 'Far in the heavens my God retires:/ My God, the mark of my desires,/ And hides his lovely face.' Many of the songs, the composer writes in his introduction, 'have to do with a search for God - or the spiritual world more broadly - and a right relationship with nature and the cosmos. Sometimes when I listen to music, and, more often, when I make music, the world seems to reveal a little more of what it really is - and relationships feel clear and direct, and "heaven" not so far away at all' Songlist: Shape Note Inspired Tunes, Far Heaven, Cabin Hill, Owen Sound, North Street, Kingdom, Sweet Brother Weed, Mission Farm, Jackson Heights, Three-Part Songs, Sometimes, Night Song, Spring and Fall, Stars, Ubiquity, How Long?, Autumn Carol, Three Restless Songs, Four and Five-Part Songs, Inversnaid, Pied Beauty, Measure of the Stars, Mother Root, Falling, Notes on The Music Edward Higginbottom : Three Folksongs Edward Higginbottom writes a highly accessible and mellifluous arrangement of "Down By the Sally Gardens". This lilting, beautiful choral work sets text by an unknown Welsh-American slate quarryman which speaks of the poet's love of his country of origin, perhaps, even, his longing to return. It is this sense of longing for the homeland (in Welsh, hiraeth) which infuses the composition. The work is sung in English but the words "Wales, our land," may be substituted for the three recurring Welsh words, "Cymru, ein gwlad." Iain Grandage : Three Australian Bush Songs These songs use a musical language which is contemporary yet easily approachable by mixed voices choirs including those at the high school level. Its central "birdsong chorus" includes mixed meters, onomatopoeia, and improvised bird calls. The two outer movements surround this energetic paen with slow evocative harmonies describing respectively sunrise and sunset. The three titles are Dawn, Birds and Sunset. The parts sometimes divide.
