"America the Beautiful" is an American patriotic song. The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey.
Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, "Pikes Peak", first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled "America" for publication.
Ward had originally written the music, "Materna", for the hymn "O Mother dear, Jerusalem" in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful.
The song is one of the most popular of the many American patriotic songs

There's a spirited, sassy cover of Rossini's "William Tell Overture" that would have the Swingles looking over their shoulders, Sinatra's "Fly Me To The Moon" becomes a (lightly accompanied) scattish, salsa romp, and Toto's "Rosanna" is a finger-snapping winner, as is Brazilian composer Manfredo Fest's energetic "That's What She Says." A bonus track, "America the Beautiful," was included "after the tremendous response from the a cappella community when they performed it at the West Coast Summit!" 11 songs, each a many-faceted gem. "An A cappella Trek," Voice Trek's 5th recording, is a joy from beginning to end, one of the best Vocal Jazz CDs we've heard this year! The band became the park's most popular atmosphere group, and performed every day at Disneyland for almost three years; now they exist primarily outside of Disney, making appearances on TV and radio, headlining on cruise ships, corporate events and the Orange County Performing Arts Center. We had the pleasure of watching and hearing Los Angeles-based Vybration's wonderful set at the Harmony Sweeps Finals, which won them 2nd place against a very strong field of Regional winners, and Best Original Arrangement for Sharon's arrangement of "Route 66." That finger-poppingly jazzy song is one of our favorites among the 12 songs here, other ones are the Eagles' "Fly Like an Eagle," a jazzy "Blue Skies," "Fly" medley, Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," Otis Redding's Bay Area anthem segueing into the Doo-Wop hit, "Dock of the Boardwalk" the Mamas and the Papa's iconic hit "California Dreamin', Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People," and "Disco Medley." Vybration's stage act was completely fun-these three men and three women obviously love what they do, and it adds up to great entertainment! This beautiful American patriotic melody is sensitively arranged for younger players and will be a useful and versatile addition to any band library. A heralding introduction leads to a stately theme, which is played by the low brass and clarinets and expressively highlighted with trumpet and flute countermelodies. When the melody repeats, an optional chorus (or trumpet soli) joins in and continues through the triumphant climax. (Grade 2) Use the easy-to-play piano accompaniment or add the band arrangement.

A wonderful new arrangement for men's chorus of this classic patriotic song. The melody is accompanied by a rich piano part that changes throughout to reflect the spirit of the text - from flowing to marching to dramatic. The vocal writing is accessible yet thoughtful as the composer weaves the melody throughout to feature each voice part. Duration: ca. 4:45

Uses: Patriotic Scripture: II Chronicles 7:14; Psalm 33:12 This beloved patriotic anthem is presented with a dignified reverence. After an opening flourish, the verse unfolds simply, and then increases color in the harmonies. The next verse features some special vocal effects imitating a plucked guitar. A triumphant, bold spirit characterizes the finale, and a return of the opening gesture is just the right exclamation point.
Arranger: Joseph Martin | Composer: Samuel A. Ward
Ruth's setting of this beloved patriotic song has a dignity and a beauty of its own, keeping well within the capabilities of the young musician. Tight harmonies enhance the familiar melody without extremes of range or vocal demands. The optional baritone part on the three-part mixed edition offers additional performance options. And, the setting builds just as it should to a stirring finish.
Arranger: Ruth Elaine Schram
We think this is the finest arrangement we've heard of the patriotic work that many believe should be our national anthem. Mark Hayes' arrangement uses fresh, new harmonies and is thoroughly inspirational. Optional narration includes writings by Jefferson, Lincoln, and Martin Luther King. Vocals are not difficult for a piece of this order. Consider for use at festivals. InstruPax includes: director's score, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, 2 French horns (opt. baritone), percussion.
