Samba Mass is a joyous and colourful setting of the Latin Missa brevis. The work is framed by the gentle bossa nova style of the warm Kyrie and relaxed Agnus Dei, which is prefaced by a funky Benedictus. The compelling rhythms of samba come to the fore in the second movement, a vivacious Gloria, which is followed by a beautiful Sanctus that offsets a steady flow of quavers with rhythmic syncopations. The stylistic piano part can be played as written or serve as a guide, and an optional guitar, bass, and drum kit part is available separately for band accompaniment. Performers will enjoy exploring the interplay between voices and the rich, warm colours of the samba and bossa nova styles

Based on an ancient Taoist fable about a small village farmer whose fortune continually changes through a chain of interconnected events. Singers are divided into two character groups - the narrator and the villagers - and a soloist sings the role of the farmer. The moral of the story: You never know, keep on going. All is not as it first appears.

The Lorca suite is probably Rautavaara's most popular choral work. The combination of Lorca's poetry and the soaring melodic lines of the music make it a true pearl of contemporary choral literature. Rautavaara has injected each of the four movements of the suite with its own unmistakable character. Text: Federico Garcia Lorca (Spanish/Finnish), duration: 7 minutes.

The First Runo is unusual in that it is a setting of part of the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic, in an English translation rather than the original Finnish. Rautavaara has chosen the very first poem of the Kalevala, which describes the creation of the world according to Finnish mythology. Rautavaara uses a shimmering vocal texture to paint an image of the primeval lake. Duration: 8 minutes.

The vocal movements may be performed a cappella. Similarily, the Meditations may be performed as a suite for strings.

The English part song is back, with New World freshness and flair! A prolific composer, Eleanor Daley has a remarkable gift for melody. Born in 1977 in Latvia, Eriks Esenvalds is an original and sought-after voice of the Baltic music tradition. Commissioners have included the Latvian Radio Choir and State Choir "Latvija", the Britten Sinfonia, Trinity College Choir Cambridge, Temple University (USA), the Boston Symphony Orchestra and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The Four Russian peasant songs display in microcosm Stravinsky's adoption of the folk idiom while transforming it into something unmistakably his own. His fingerprints are even clearer in his later arrangement of 1954 where he adds four horns. The only vocal differences in the two versions are occasional re-barring, a few minor changes of word-stress, plus one song's straight transposition, but the effect places what was close to authentic folk music firmly into the context of twentieth-century sonorities and language. According to Simon Karlinsky, Stravinsky's mistranslation of the title Podblyudnye as 'saucers' has for a long time given a false association to the activity with which the songs are connected. They are now thought to have been sung during the method of fortune-telling by pulling small possessions from a covered dish of water. 'Ovsen', the second song is also now thought to have more to do with the name of the first day of spring in the pre-Christian Russian calendar than any mythological figure. Many of Brahms' early choral works are the result of his work in the 1850s as director of a women's choir in Hamburg and the choral society of Detmold. These three sacred choruses are based on rather complex contrapuntal forms: O Bone Jesu is a metric double canon in contrary motion. Adoramus te, Christe is a continuous four-voice canon at the fourth, fifth and octave. Regina coeli is a canon in contrary motion sung by two soloists with choral interjections of Alleluia. Together with an Ave Maria, these comprise Brahms' only published settings of Latin texts. Duration: ca. 3:30.

Day by Day was written for the Chamber Choir of Burntwood School and their conductor Debbie Lammin. It was first performed by them on 25th March 2019 at the Royal Festival Hall, London, as part of A Brighter Sound 2019, a concert presented by Wandsworth Schools' Music. Texts are by the Japanese poets, Matsuo Basho, Yosa Buson, and Kobayashi Issa, translated from The Essential Haiku by Robert Hass.

A Parliament of Owls is a celebration of collective nouns in three contrasting movements. Carol Barratt's text assembles these evocative expressions into hilarious nonsense poems.

The anthems in this book have been chosen from the best religious music of many churches, countries, and centuries. Since the amount of good church music composed for women's voices is practically negligible, the book contains for the most part traditional airs and carols newly harmonized, arrangements of music composed originally for mixed voices, and a few judiciously selected songs originally composed for solo voice, to which choral parts have been added. There are included a number of anthems intended to be sung without accompaniment and simple enough for a young choir's first venture into a cappella singing. When I first read Catherine de Vinck's jubilant celebration of birth, renewal, and life "The Womanly Song of God" (the complete poem appears on page 27), I heard it as a head-tossing, laughing, dancing first-person soliloquy. I was immediately drawn to its energy and set out to compose a work with exactly the same feeling. The Choir acts both as a singing group and as drumming group. The piece begins with a "call to the dance" consisting of an upward scale that builds to a diatomic nine-note chord. Following this, the choir becomes a drumming group, spinning sung rhythmic patterns into a buoyant accompaniment to the sung text. C major (Ionian mode) anchors the piece tonally. As the piece progresses, the choir, as drumming group, adds foot-stomping and hand-clapping, until the piece becomes a vibrant song-dance. - Libby Larsen
