Sounds of a Better World = small voices calling is a series of songs focusing on children. It examines their world and how small steps can be made to improve it.
When this journey began for me almost five years ago, I was very disturbed to learn of various incidents around the world where children were subjected to adverse conditions. I began to wonder how they could possibly develop into caring, responsible adults, with such hardship defining their childhood.
As I read more and explored our attitudes as a society toward children, I began to feel that we (as Dr. Martin Luther King said) "must ask ourselves how responsible we are for the well-being of others". Do we have the courage to feel responsible? What ideals do we strive for? How can we find innovative ways in which the personal and social problems of childhood can be overcome? Can music be utilized as a potential bridge to reach out and address these issues?
What I have come to understand is that we must send the best part of ourselves into the future through our children. If we want society to evolve, we need to understand the importance of childhood, and how vital our role should be in doing whatever we can to nuture every child. We should all be aware of our powerful influence on their minds. Through this incredible journey that Sounds of a Better World has taken me on, I hope to have somehow addressed these issues and to have embraced the joy that children can bring into this world. - Jim Papoulis

Created during an inspirational collaboration between the Fairfax Choral Society Poetry of Music, the Fairfax Public Schools and the composer, young people were encouraged to write poetry. The metaphor embraced by the young poets is that of a flame in all of us that, which when encouraged, keeps dancing and giving others hope. The music embraces this reverence and when joined by the text, a truly special message is shared.

I ask for one day where I don't have to hear about pain, or life that's lost. I ask for one day where whispers of hope are alive inside my heart. These words, written by 12 year old Claire Latimer, 7th grader, moved the composer to create this inspiring work.

It seems like a simple concept that kindness in the world will open up the doors to our hearts. Yet we often need to be reminded of this by our young people. In a song writing workshop that occured just before we were all sent inside by the Corona Virus pandemic, young people in grades 2-8 did just that. Almost like magic, Jim has captured this inspiring sentiment in a beautiful new anthem.

Kindergartners in Brookline, Mass. cut to the essence of music when they instructed the composer to write Simplicity, beauty, love, and music is the message they want to convey to the world. Here is a poignant song for your youngest singers.

In a world of conflict and violence, the true essence of this work should be one of gentle inner understanding that peace can come from all of us. After the opening phrase, Look in the eyes of the children, feel the touch of their hands, there is peace, the verse enters, with a full, yet still gentle sound. The refrain is more celebratory, followed by a quiet bridge and ending which is calm and introspective, much like the opening.
