Review: Yes, you want to sing patriotic songs, but you want them with a bit of a contemporary twist? Then check out these charts by Deke Sharon. Standard "America The Beautiful" is scored SATB w/solo (alto or baritone), with a 12/8 groove. George M. Cohan's "Yankee Doodel Dandy" is a driving swing, with unexpected syncopations and some whistling with an SSATB voicing. Then there's Neil Diamond's "(Coming to) America" - a contemporary ode to our country of immigrants (SSATB). Lee Greenwood's modern anthem "God Bless The USA" is designed to send shivers down the spines and bring audiences to their feet. And finally, you can rock out to the Steve Miller Band chart "Living In The USA" - SSAB w/tenor solo - with a decidedly more jaundiced view of American culture. A little something for everyone!
Songlist: America, God Bless The USA, Living In The USA, America, The Beautiful, Yankee Doodle Dandy

Review: This five-song volume includes songs your jazz ensemble will love to sing! Each of these songs is a classic on its own, and in the hands of master a cappella arranger Deke Sharon they become true vocal jazz classics. "Always" is 4-part SATB, with the melody passing among the parts. "Blue Skies" is Sop/Mezzo/Alto/Tenor/Bass, with the Alto written as "optional" (in case you need to sing it with just four parts) and includes a scat break. "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" is scored for SATB with a baritone solo - a very cool jazz waltz! Everyone gets a turn in "Route 66," both with the melody and little scat opportunities. Finally, "What'll I Do" is a gorgeous 4-part rubato ballad spiced with plaintive triplets echoing the refrain in thebackground. A real winner!
Songlist: Always, Blue Skies, Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin', What'll I Do, Route 66

Songlist: Sign Your Name, (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay, Turn The Beat Around, When Will I Be Loved?
Review: Designed to be introductory primers for high school or other beginning groups, the Contemporary A Cappella Association Songbooks nonetheless adhere to a fine musical standard (unlike some beginning arrangements, which can be watered down and unsatisfying). There are informative performance notes and recommendations for transposing parts, to permit performance by all male or female ensembles. In addition, a discography suggests definitive recordings of these popular songs, which can help facilitate the learning process and educate the ear. Easy to use, the CASA songbooks are an excellent resource.

Review: A selection of standards arranged by Deke Sharon and Anne Raugh from the popular CASA songbook series. Women's arrangements - especially interesting ones - are in very short supply. Pat Benetar reached the top 10 with "Hit Me With Your Best Shot' and ""Let's Hear It For The Boy" from the movie "Footloose" was another big seller. Lisa Loeb has developed a sterling reputation as a great contemporary singer/songwriter and this arrangement by Deke Sharon of her "Stay" is a true delight.

Review: At the heart of every vocal group is the music it performs. This often means writing its own arrangements of popular or traditional songs. This book is the long-awaited definitive work on the subject, wide ranging both in its scope and in its target audience - which spans beginners, music students, and community groups to professional and semi-professional performers, vocal/instrumental songwriters, composers, and producers - providing genre-specific insight on a cappella writng. The tone of the book is instructive and informative, yet conversational: it is intended to stand alongside any academic publication while remaining interesting and fun. Dubbed "the Father of Contemporary A Cappella" author Deke Sharon has firmly established himself as one of the leading vocal harmony talents today having arranged over 2,000 songs which are published worldwide. Deke was vocal producer on NBC's "The Sing-Off" and served as arranger, on-site music director and vocal producer for Universal's "Pitch Perfect" movie. A Cappella Arranging is a good textbook - and a "good read" - for every vocal arranger, whether amateur or professional; every vocal music classroom, and any professional recording studio. We highly recommend this book.
Songlist: Basic Arranging in 10 Steps, Principals in Arranging, What is Arranging?, The Arranging Sprectrum, Discovering Your Toolkit, Transcription, Five Myths About Music Making, Vocal Conventions, Song Selection, Listening to the Original, Listening to Other Versions, Form and Conceptualization, Preparing Your Materials, Melody and Lyrics, The Bass Line, and more
Review: Widely considered to one of today's top a cappella arrangers Derric Johnson is also one of our favorites. This songbook is a collection of 14 classic American folk songs as for arranged and performed by Derric Johnson's Liberty Voices and which can be heard on their CDs "A Cappella Americana" and "A Slice of A Cappella". To study a Derric Johnson arrangement is to contemplate the canon of a master. Key to his style is his seamless blending of classical choral and jazz idioms that are fresh, yet easy to assimilate. We highly recommend this songbook for most all choirs, ensembles and groups should have a least one Derric Johnson arrangement in their repertoire.
Songlist: America, The Beautiful, Love's Old Sweet Song, My Country 'Tis Of Thee, Oh! Susanna, Shenandoah, Simple Gifts, Skip To My Lou, The Star Spangled Banner, Swing Low, Taps, The Red White And Blue, We The People, Yankee Doodle, You Are My Sunshine

Review: In the spring of 1991, a new beat arrived in the fledgling world of modern a cappella - a beat in the form of Scott Leonard. Beyond the initial impact and power of his performances on stage and on reordings, he brought arrangements full of groove and heart. Unfamiliar with the growing "cult" of a cappella, his arrangements arrived influenced by the R&B-flavored pop of his Stevie Wonder-rich childhood, and a love for vocal groups of the past from the Mills Brothers to Bread to the Jackson Five. From the first bar of his first arrangement for Rockapella, 'Bed of Nails,' he brought a different approach. Since that first arrangement, Scott has arranged 100+ originals and covers for Rockapella. Here, finally, is an attempt to scratch the surface!
Songlist: Dance With Me, Have A Little Faith, Here Comes The Sun, I'll Hear Your Voice, Moments of You
Review: Long awaited, the 20 arrangements contained herein are a joyous testimony to the significance of this African-American female ensemble. Compiled and edited by Ysaye M Barnwell, whose bass register and poignant compositions are an integral component of the Sweet Honey character, the songbook also includes performance notes, a discography and several essays. The voice ranges vary, depending upon the arrangement, but are typically five part, and reach down into the bass clef, notated as SATB plus lead. Their songs are living and breathing entities, and the texture of their sound requires flexibility. As said of Sweet Honey in the foreword, by Harry Belafonte, "their melodies make the soul sing!"
Songlist: Breaths, Would You Harbor Me?, We Are..., Cum Ba Yah, Young and Positive, Inner Voices, Run, Denko, Fulani Chant, Dream Songs Of Love, Wodaabe Nights, Alunde, Stay, Prayer To The One, Goin' To See My Baby, and more
Review: Since the release of Ticket to Ride, the Swingle Singers have received many requests from choirs and a cappella groups for their Beatles' arrangements. Finally, they have published a companion songbook to the popular album. The book contains the seventeen songs from the CD arranged for four to eight voices and features a bonus arrangement of "Here, There and Everywhere" for AATTBB. These wonderful arrangements include the original scat syllables used on the recording as well as alternated endings for the songs that fade out. Another great addition to the Swingle publications, this book will have your group creating a new wave of Beatle mania at your next concert.
Songlist: Penny Lane, Revolution, Day Tripper, Norwegian Wood, Birthday, Lady Madona, Yesterday, Strawberry Fields Forever, Drive My Car, Blackbird / I Will, When I'm Sixty-Four, The Fool On The Hill, All My Loving, I Am The Walrus, Goodnight, and more
Review: America's favorite a cappella show returned recently for another smash season with show-stoppers like this medley from super group fun. If you are up for no lip-synching, back-up bands or safety net, this chart is for you! The Peter Gabriel song "In Your Eyes" was included on the 2013 season of NBC's The Sing-Off and features a fantastic vocal groove, gospel style back-up chorus and riveting lead solo. "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" was hit by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes from the 1987 film Dirty Dancing features two soloists with a rich vocal accompaniment. Opening simply, it builds consistently through two key changes to an electrifying final cadence.
Songlist: In Your Eyes, (I've Had) The Time of My Life, fun. Medley, Carry On, Some Nights, We Are Young
Review: The Van Morrison classic "Brown Eyed Girl" is accessible for newly formed a cappella groups, and satisfying for more experienced ensembles. The modern day classic "True Colors" has been a huge hit for both Cyndi Lauper and Phil Collins. Now it's your turn! "Be True To Your School" is perfect for pep rallies, sporting events and school assemblies, the breakdown in this arrangement gives your singers a chance to get everyone in the bleachers chanting and clapping along. Rah Rah Sis Boom Bah! The little gem "Autumn Leaves" is perfect for your fall concert. Lush rubato chords roll through most of the song, but the bridge is a snappy up tempo wake-up call. "Superman (It's Not Easy)" - At last, a song for your mixed ensemble that wants to sing 21st century music in the college a cappella style! This ballad by Five For Fighting features a high, light tenor solo singing about that common young adult sentiment, "it's not easy to be me." First performed by The Persuasions and popularized by The Nylons, "Good Old A Cappella"``` is an a cappella classic!
Songlist: Be True To Your School, True Colors, Superman (It's Not Easy), Brown Eyed Girl, Good Old A Cappella
Review: With elegant simplicity, Deke Sharon's arrangement of the Irving Berlin classic "White Christmas" gives each voice its moment to shine. The minimal homophony keeps the pleasurable chord changes coming, culminating with a satisfying cadenza progression that will close your holiday concert with class. Looking for something to spice up your Christmas program? How about the Elvis classic "Santa Claus Is Back In Town"? With plenty of swagger and swing, the tenor solo sits over a bed of playful doo-woppy harmonies. "got no sliegh with reindeer, got no sack on my back, you're gonna see me comin' in a big black Cadillac! Finally a setting of the Charlie Brown Christmas classic "Christmas Time Is Here" that doesn't require a children's choir! The sweetly sentimental Tenor 1 melody floats over and dips into a woven texture of rich jazz harmonies. Originally made famous by Kay Starr, this arrangement transforms "(Everybody's Waitin' for) The Man With The Bag" into a playful barbershop swing, with the melody in the tenor 2 line, and lots of right homophony.
Songlist: White Christmas, Christmas Time Is Here, (Everybody's Waitin' for) The Man with the Bag, Santa Claus Is Back In Town
Review: Sting's poignant song, 'Fragile,' expresses our vulnerability, and this sensitive arrangement will touch the hearts of singers and audiences alike. 'Brown Eyed Girl,' a Van Morrison classic is accessible for newly formed a cappella groups, and satisfying for more experienced ensembles. Review: "Feel the Earth Move" is one of rock's most iconic women's songs (from Carole King's Tapestry), this pulsing, rhythmic arrangement incorporates elements of doo-wop and contemporary a cappella beneath a barn-burning solo. Review: Let your students express themselves with 'Drive,' the 90s "soft metal" hit by Incubus. In the collegiate a cappella style, this song brings a message of self-empowerment: "When I drive myself my light is found." This arrangement is challenging rhythmically, giving your advanced students a lesson in syncopation they will relish. Originally published in the collection Jazz Standards, 'Autumn Leaves' is perfect for your fall concert. Lush rubato chords roll through most of the song, but the bridge is a snappy up tempo wake-up call. Review: "Fields of Gold" - If it wasn't written by Sting, this haunting melody could easily be a traditional English fold song. The melody moves through all four women's parts, with the background texture changing in each verse, ranging from arpeggiated polyphony to warm close harmony. "Here Comes the Sun" - Perfect for a spring concert, this bright Beatles classic features rich harmonies and light arpeggiated textures resulting in a warm sound without being too complex. The melody is in the Soprano 1 line, allowing either a group or individual solo. Review: Quite probably the busiest performing a cappella group in the country The Voices of Liberty are also one of the longest running professional a cappella groups as they perform several sets each and every day at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The group follows in an even longing-running tradition of Regeneration, as both are almost the same as they were both directed by, and perform almost exclusively the arrangements of, the great Derric Johnson. The sheet music we've all been waiting for, finally some of Derric Johnson's finest Christmas arrangements have been printed for us to sing! Included are 3 Volumes of 4 songs each from the namesake recordings.
