Originally written for The Children's Aid Society Chorus of New York City, this e.e. cummings text lends itself so nicely to the pure sound of treble voices and explores the idea of transformative innocence - that no state of being is so dark or hopeless that it cannot be transformed into light and joy through innocence. This work for treble voices, cello and classical guitar begins with an ostinato repetition of the title, before the entrance of the melodic theme superimposed in counterpoint with the cello melody. It is divided into three main parts, each built out of several short sections, all connected by a continuous flowing piano accompaniment with the texture shifting back and forth between a chorale-like hymn and a three part canon. "Queen Ann" is Jane Seymour, the third and most beloved wife of Henry VIII, who died giving birth to Edward VI. Originating in England, this ballad then traveled to America where it settled in the isolated Kentucky hills. The story is told by three characters each of whom carry a distinctive timbre: treble I - Jane Seymour, treble II - the narrator, and treble III - Henry VIIII. The slow tempo and emotional context of the text give many opportunities for word painting and subtle dynamic nuances.

With a flowing piano accompaniment, the vocal texture is mainly homophonic, interspersed with brief contrapuntal sections. This particular poem speaks of remembering a relationship, and the need for reflecting upon it in a positive light. A new arrangement for treble voices.

With a text by thirteenth century poet Meister Eckhart that speaks of the fall from and a return to grace, composer Brewbaker uses mostly homophonic writing with soft, contemporary harmonies to find the soul's rightful place in the universe.
