Dr. Betty Bertaux
Betty Bertaux, founder/director of the Children's Chorus of Maryland, was regarded as an authority on vocal and musical development in children. A former faculty member of the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and Holy Names College in Oakland, California, she has been professionally active for over 40 years, working with music students of all ages. Dr. Bertaux is internationally recognized and often engaged as a guest conductor and workshop clinician with children's choruses and choral conferences. Currently serving as an adjunct professor for VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Dr. Bertaux is also internationally established and frequently commissioned as a composer and arranger of music for treble choirs. This moving arrangement was performed by the Children's Chorus of Maryland at the National Tribute Memorial Service for Fallen Firefighters in October 2002, honoring over 400 men and women who perished in 2001 while performing acts of bravery and heroism.

A well-known children's folk song from the African American tradition, Chatter with the Angels has been sung and enjoyed by American children of all cultural backgrounds for at least a hundred years. Easily-learned and fun to sing.

There are countless wassail songs from the many regions of Great Britain, but Cornish Wassail derives from Cornwall, in the south of England. This cheerful, unison arrangement has two possible endings: the first is rather abrupt and often gets a laugh; the other is a bit longer, and involves audience participation. Composer Betty Bertaux selected the poetry of 11 year old musician and dancer Elizabeth Porter Eachus for the Fairfax Children's Chorus 2012 project. With a piano part that is rhythmic and syncopated, the vocal lines sing descriptive passages that create a joyful mood. Duration: ca. 7 minutes with repeats.

First sung by 17th century African slaves in Bolivia, this song of celebration uses a unique Afro-Hispanic dialect. It was most likely performed and danced at the manger scene on Christmas Eve, accompanied by instruments to create a joyful noise. Duration: ca. 3:00.

While He is Born (Il est né) is suitably performed by a unison group of singers of any age, this arrangement was first performed in 1997 by the first grade class of Corpus Christi School in Piedmont, California. There are several musical concepts and skills that can be exercised during the rehearsal of the piece. Such elements as form, tonality, melody, meter, rhythm, harmony, dynamics, theory and expressiveness can all be explored through listening, thinking, movement and solfa.

How good and pleasant it is that people live together in peace. This compelling Israeli melody with its Dorian nature, small range, stepwise motion, and repetitive text is perfectly suited for singers of all ages. The addition of a sparse piano accompaniment and varied percussion timbres complement the effect of an exotic tonal flavor. Duration: ca. 3:15.

Originally conceived at the request of Children's Chorus of Maryland, this arrangement of an old Praetorius melody was intended to be accessible to singers ranging in age from 6 to 17 years. The tune is reinvented through the use of a variety of instruments and the result is that new life is breathed into an old favorite. Available separately: SSSAAA, Instrumental Parts. This new version of a well-known song makes a clear break from tradition to set the melody free and let it return to its roots. The accompanying flute and handbells lend a suitably medieval timbre to this colorful and celebratory piece.

The song S'Vivon depicts the Hanukkah dreydl, a small top with four sides. Each side of the dreydl contains one of the four Hebrew initials of the phrase, "(A) Great Miracle Happened There."

Sing Me a Song is one of the more popular Italian canzonetta of the late 16th Century. Similar to the madrigal with a secular text, the canzonetta is less serious with bright melodies and up-beat, dance-like rhythms. This setting of three includes: Mules an enticing tango; Betty Botter's Butter with stylistic hints of Gilbert and Sullivan, includes a canon with a mid-stream change of tonality, and finally, a quasi-recitative; Tree Toad, a good old down-home country tune.
