The live, eight-song EP "circle square diamond and flag" includes some songs from that magic night, "Carolina Pines," and "Bring Me Little Water, Silvie." The remaining songs are all "Shape Note" hymns, which flourished in late 18th century-early 19th century New England, where hymn books would fill with these uniquely modal, contrapuntal songs. This is a sumptuous, gorgeous collection of 15 tunes, some of which are lightly accompanied by bass, guitar and even a Moroccan riq on the lovely opening cut, "Before This Time Another Year." These 7 women share a love of good stories, eclectic tastes and music from different cultures. Two originals, "Cave Ranger," which reflects on the sexy possibilities of a date with a cave ranger, and "Teenage Girls.," tells the tragic tale of the death of a beloved teenage friend, are marvelous. Other favorites are the sweetly rhythmic "Be Mine (Little Baby)," "Satellites," "My Babe," "I'll Never Leave You Baby," the bluesy "Blue and Lonesome," the stark anti-war song "No More To The Dance," shape-note tune "Wondrous Love," "Shto Si Goro," a gospel tune from the Georgia Sea Islands, the powerful "Kappee," a Finnish folk tale, the poignant ballad "Teenage Girls" and the wonderful American shape note song, "Long Time Traveller." Since first getting together in 1998 to harmonize favorite tunes with each other, the group took the name Stella in 2000 and began to perform publicly in venues such as the NC Museum of Art, Festival for the Eno, Artsplosure, Light Up Durham and Black Mountain, NC's LEAF Festival. The hymns and spirituals on this recording are among the great discoveries faith has made about itself, through words and music that now belong to us all. For a period of about 250 years, from the arrival of the Puritans to nearly the end of the 19th century, the most pervasive musical form in America was the hymn. While Protestant hymns and Negro spirituals were certainly the predominant hymnody in America throughout this time, other denominational hymns were written and sung as well. The first hymnal for the Jewish congregation in Charleston, South Carolina was compiled in 1843 and the Shakers have given us some of the most beautiful and interesting religious songs that have been written in America. This recording was made at a live concert at Christ & St. Stephen's Church in New York City. Beautifully sung by the William Appling Singers, this recording will satisfy both the Americana scholar, the music lover and those of faith. Songlist: Liberty Hall, Rise, Shine, for Thy Light Is A-Coming, Welwyn, Pisgah, Poor Rosy, I've Just Come from the Fountain, Let Us Cheer the Weary Traveler, Nettleton, Wondrous Love, Gospel Train, Shining Shore, More Love, In Mercy, Lord, Beautiful River, Some of These Days, The Old Ship of Zion, St Peter, Missionary Chant, Inching Along, Watchman, Hurry On, My Weary Soul, Morning Trumpet, He's a Mighty Good Leader, Hold On, Resignation, We Shall Walk Through the Valley Word Of Mouth Chorus : Rivers of Delight Shape-note music refers to a particular system of notation and part singing popularized in the nineteenth century through a series of songbooks, of which the "Sacred Harp," compiled in 1844, was one. Typically sung in four parts, these spirited folk-derived tunes are rough-hewn, having emerged from the English Colonies that were their soil; their subject matter, the sacred and the secular. These songs were sung by and for the people, though displaying a fine musical sensibility; the "Word of Mouth Chorus" (from Plainfield, Vermont) is in top form, singing "Greenwich," "The Better Land," "Northfield" and eighteen others. Songlist: American Folk Hymns from the Sacred HarpTradition, Northfield, Soar Away, Cowper, Evening Shade, Daniel Read, Elder Edmund Dumas, Eternal Day, Sweet Prospect, North Port, Greenwich, Wondrous Love, Peace and Joy, Parting Friends, Weeping Mary, Alabama, Milford, New Jerusalem, The Better Land, attr. Elkanah Kelsey Dare, attr. Elkanah Kelsey Dare, Choirs of Brigham Young University : A Thanksgiving of American Folk Hymns A Thanksgiving Of American Folk Hymns is a visual feast from the rich tradition of music at Brigham Young University. As the hour long program begins, an early American landscape of colorful leaves and delicate autumn branches gives way to 400 singers and over a hundred instrumentalists joined in song. To see them, through windows of faith, is to hear beloved favorites anew-Shaker hymns, American folk songs, an African-American spiritual, Southern folk hymns and such classics as Abide With me; 'Tis Eventide and The Battle hymn of the Republic. Voices soar, and we see in the faces of fervent young performers a celebration of the gladness and sorrow that has shaped America-an America we have been and hope to be. Songlist: Saints Bound for Heaven, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, Simple Gifts, The Morning Trumpet, Come, We That Love the Lord, Wondrous Love, Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal Southern Folk Hymn, Let Me Fly, Cindy American Folk Song, Bound for the Promised Land, Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee, Redeemer of Israel, Third Symphony, How Can I Keep from Singing, Abide With Me; 'Tis Eventide, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Come, Though Fount of Every Blessing |

An arrangement of a song from The Sacred Harp songbook, the basis of the longstanding community "shape-note" singing tradition in the rural South. This selection is winningly lyrical and heartfelt. Recorded by Children's Chorus of Maryland, Betty Bertaux, Director.
Arranger: Betty Bertaux
The arranger maintains the authenticity of this "Southern Harmony" tune with sustained pitches that create a harmonic openness. A striking setting of this favorite melody, the song matures through its repetitions, ending with beautiful, lush harmonies.
