"Where is Love?" is a song from the Tony Award-winning British musical Oliver! and the 1968 film Oliver! based on the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. The musical was written by Lionel Bart and was first staged in London's West End in 1960. Oliver Twist, the leading character, sings the song after being thrown into the cellar of a funeral parlour for getting into a fight with Noah Claypole, another servant of the undertaker. Later in the show a reprise is sung by Mr Brownlow's housekeeper, Mrs Bedwin.

One of the reasons they were so successful was due to their stunning arrangements by tenor Gene Cokeroft who became one of the most respected barbershop arrangers of all time. Here is a collection of arrangements that are a joy to sing for quartets of all abilities. Songlist: After You've Gone, As Time Goes By, The Chordbuster's March, Danny Boy, Jezebel, Show Me Where The Good Times Are, The Old Black Magic, They Wrote 'em In The Good Ol' Days, Where Is Love? Various Arrangers : Women's Classic Pop Vol 3 The 1970's pop hit "Come In From The Rain" translates beautifully into a lush and deeply felt a cappella ballad. Perfect for graduation, end-of-the-year programing of a special concert feature, you will want to perform it again and again! Introduce your choir to the fun of a cappella singing with this accessible arrangement of the Lee Ann Womack hit "I Hope You Dance" that topped the charts in 2001. Crafted for success, this setting gives all the parts a chance to sing the melody while the background vocals are easy and create a perfect stylistic texture. "We Will Rock You" - Your whole crowd will join in with the stomps and claps as you perform this rock and roll classic! This iconic 1978 pop hit by Queen will bring down the house! Here is the tender love ballad from "Where Is Love?" Oliver in a shimmering a cappella setting for women's voices. A gem! Songlist: Come In From The Rain, I Hope You Dance, We Will Rock You, Where Is Love? Various Arrangers : Musicals Vol. 2 'All The Things You Are,' the classic Jerome Kern ballad, is the perfect choice for that "quiet" spot in your vocal program. One chorus, a cappella, written with great respect for the wonderful lyrics and mood of the piece. Using a dramatic mix of quiet unisons, lush open voicings and some tasteful chord substitutions, this arrangement makes an elegant statement that lets the timeless beauty of the song shine through. 'Surrey with the Fringe on Top' is one of the most challenging vocal jazz charts today and worth every minute. This chart was premiered by Dave Cross and the Edmonds Community College Soundsations. 'Never, Never Land,' the beautiful ballad from Peter Pan, is sure to be enjoyed by all. It features thick, lush harmonies as well as a short, sweet tenor and soprano duet. An absolutely gorgeous piece! This setting of 'Where Is Love?' is a lush and easy listening version of this pretty tune. The voicings are balanced and relatively square so it's a good arrangement to work on tuning your group and getting the voicings to ring and buzz in the appropriate spots. It's relatively short with an AABB form. It's a perfect song for a pensive a cappella moment in your program. Songlist: All The Things You Are, Never Never Land, Where Is Love?, Surrey with the Fringe on the Top Yumiko Matsuoka : Collection Volume 2 The Lennon-McCartney classic "Eleanor Rigby" retains some of the flavor of the original Beatles' arrangement intact by giving the background vocals a string-like texture in the opening section. It then goes through a couple of key changes and gives different parts an opportunity to sing the melody, while the background supports with strong harmony and interesting counterlines. Arranged for a cappella quintet Vox One, the classic "Danny Boy" song showcases a soprano solo. In the middle section, the alto and tenor parts weave a line reminiscent of a brook in a green field of Ireland. Lush, complex harmony and a dramatic build-up reward both the singes and the audience. Recorded on Vox One's, Chameleon. The national anthem is treated here with solemn but inspirational sound. The rich harmony, without going too far away from the original, builds to a climax with contrapuntal lines that make it interesting for the singers. Written for the New York-based group the Western Wind, Yumiko's arrangement of 'Where Is Love?' opens with a mezzo/alto feature backed by flowing lines reminiscent of a small string ensemble. After the interlude, the melody is passed onto different parts with a surprise ending that involves a couple of tonality changes. Written for a cappella quintet Vox One's comeback album of the same title, 'Pure Imagination' features a soprano solo with the background vocals that re-creates the dreamy world of Willy Wonk'a Chocolate Factory. Come and explore the harmony and texture that builds up to a fantastic climax. It will make you want to watch and savor the movie once again. Dealer's Choice : Anthology Vol 4 A different line-up than that of the previous recording-Brian Beck and Greg Clancy assuming the positions of Al Kvanli and Greg Lyne-Volume Four nonetheless reflects the same fine close harmony that made Dealer's Choice consistently popular, even today. Leading off with a crowd-pleasing Beach Boys medley, the Dealers segue into "If You Could Read My Mind," the 'seventies pop hit, the arrangement of which is entirely original and a barbershop how-to manual of stylistic conversion. A recommended selection for any fan of the genre, but Dealer's Choice enthusiasts will want all four volumes. Songlist: Beach Boys Medley, If You Could Read My Mind, Hello Mary Lou, Brian's Song, I'm Looking At The World Through Rose Colored Glasses, Where Is Love?, I Don't Know Why I Love You Like I Do, You'll Never Know, Mr. Piano Man, Like The First Tme Four Tunes : Wrapped Up In A Dream In the late 40s and early 50s the style of Black vocal groups as major hit-making groups influenced by the Ink Spots and The Mills Brothers lost ground to the more teenage oriented groups like The Orioles and The Ravens. The Four Tunes, holdovers from an earlier era, were able to score two hits that were able to cross over from the race charts to the pop charts in 1953 and 1954, "Marie" and "I Understand (Just How You Feel). These songs enjoyed cover versions and revivals in the ensuing decades, by British groups in the Beat Boom, specifically The Bachelors, The G-Clefs and Freddie and the Dreamers. "Wrapped Up In Dream" is a wonderful collection on the Jasmine label of vintage R&B, Soul and Pop in two discs, all accompanied, 28 songs on one and 29 on the other, all featuring the soulful, exciting harmonies of these four talented men. It's hard to pick favorites from so many winners, but we'll give you a handful besides the two stellar hits and the title tune: "Little Jane," "Confess," "You're Heartless," "Careless Love," "The Prisoners Song," "I Gambled With Love," "Sugar Lump," "Do Do Do It Again," "Don't Cry Darling," "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman," "Brooklyn Bridge," "Three Little Chickens," "At The Steamboat River Ball," "Rock and Roll Call," "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes" and "Ballad of James Dean." Most of these tunes are new to us, and it's a kick to hear them, as if we've tuned in to a very hip radio station in the south from 60 years ago! We love this collection and bet you will too! Songlist: Where Is Love?, Wrapped Up In A Dream, I Found My Love When I Found You, All My Dreams, Little Jane, Someday, Confess, Karen Lynn, Take My Lonely Heart, You're Heartless, Careless Love, That Lonesome Road, There Goes My Heart, Kentucky Babe, Old Fashioned Love, Carry Me Back To The Lone Prairie, May That Day Never Come, The Last Round Up, The Prisoners Song, I Married An Angel, My Buddy, I'll See You In My Dreams, Come What May, The Greatest Song I Ever Heard, Lets Give Love Another Chance, Don't Get Around Much Anymore, Marie, I Gambled With Love, I Understand, Sugar Lump, and more Friendly Advice : For The Heart Tenor Dan, Lead Wes, Baritone Bill and Bass Forrest bring a combination of over 150 years of Barbershop Singing to their quartet, 2003 Evergreen District Champions. What is clear on these 13 tunes, however, is the group's love of singing and entertaining people. Some of our favorites are here, "Allegheny Moon," "In The Still of the Night," "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Stormy Weather," "That's An Irish Lullaby," "Easy Street," "Here's that Rainy Day," "Creole Cutie" and "Time After Time." Rich, smooth harmonies, heartfelt lyrics, ringing, effortless chords - these are what we've always loved about Barbershop! Songlist: Allegheny Moon, Nevertheless, In The Still Of The Night, It's Only A Paper Moon, Stormy Weather, What'll I Do, Don't Blame Me, Where Is Love?, That's An Irish Lullaby, Easy Street, Here's That Rainy Day, Creole Cutie, Time After Time Growing Girls : All Grown Up The popularity of these four charming Swedish ladies remains unabated, though it's been over a decade since they won the Sweet Adelines crown. "All Grown Up" opens with a snippet from their first rehearsal, in 1979, when the four first began singing together. They were girls then, as the picture on the CD will prove, and that auspicious occasion led to a lifetime engagement! The interpretive skills, range and timbre that characterize their sound are partly learned, but also due in part to lucky happenstance - the kind that occurs when four voices complement each other, resulting in a lusciously full representation of the audio palette! This rainbow is at its most dazzling on "The Man I Love," "Deed I Do" and "Where Is Love," combining talent with arrangements tailor-made to show it at its best. Songlist: Do Lord, This Could Be The Start Of Something Big, If You Had All The World And It's Gold, Anything Goes, I Only Have Eyes For You, Goodbye Goodbye, The Man I Love, For Once in My Life, The Churchbells Are Ringing For Mary, Deed I Do, Where Is Love?, 60's Medley, Anthem III Of A Kind : Back To The Drawing Board Fresh from their surprising win at the Harmony Sweepstakes Bay Area Regional, Filipino group III of a Kind brings us an equally surprising first CD. Deeply spiritual singers Gelo Francisco, Edward Granadosin and Annie Nepomuceno, one of few three-singer a cappella groups we have encountered, did not pull off their win because of flashy costumes and knock-your-socks-off dance moves. They did it with powerful harmonies and eye-opening music, both abundantly present on "Back To The Drawing Board." Seven songs: the Hanson's "MMMBop," Sting's "If You Love Somebody (Set Them Free)," Lennon/McCartney's "We Can Work It Out," "Where Is Love," "The Prayer," "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" and "Prayer of St. Francis." The first four songs are a cappella, the last three are accompanied-but beautiful harmonies and soulful singing throughout. Back To The Drawing Board? From their performance in SF and this CD, we think it's more like On To Triumph! Songlist: Singin' a cappella, MMMBop, If You Love Somebody, We Can Work It Out, Where Is Love?, Other Songs... not-apella, The Prayer, His Eye Is On The Sparrow, Prayer of St. Francis ManSound : If It's Magic ManSound, an a cappella sextet from Kiev, Ukraine, got its start in 1994 as an idea of composer and arranger Vladimir Mikhnovetsky. The group consists of experienced professionals and it is a permanent participant of international jazz festivals and concerts. First building a Russian fan base with concerts and appearances at jazz festivals in Moscow and other cities, ManSound began touring in 1996, when the group traveled to the United States for six weeks, performing with great success in universities and evangelical churches. In February of 2000, ManSound performed at one of the biggest jazz events in the USA, the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, following the invitation of Lionel Hampton himself. They also performed in 2002 and 2003, delighting crowds of 5000 at the nightly performances. Dr. Lynn Skinner, director of The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, called ManSound the hit of the jazz event. "Magic" has only 7 songs, but 3 are marvelous medleys, two of them of George Benson's songs and one of Stevie Wonder tunes. Besides these favorites, "They Can't Take That Away From Me," "Nature Boy," "Lullaby of Birdland and "Angel Eyes" are standouts-which includes everything on the CD. Tremendous voice control, incredible arrangements, butter-smooth blue-note harmonies, surprising tempo changes and scat breaks-it adds up to a stunning first CD by a huge, fast-rising talent in the jazz/a cappella world! Songlist: Smile Medley:, - Smile, Darn Ya, Smile, - Powder Your Face With Sunshine, Have A Little Talk With Myself, If I Had My Way, Moondance, Shenandoah, When My Sugar Walk Down the Street, Where Is Love?, Shadrack, Fare Thee Well, Love, Honey Medley:, - My Honey's Lovin Arms, - Honey That I Love So Well, You Tell Me Your Dream, Sing, Sing, Sing, Hushabye Max Q : Discovery 'Discovery' is the inaugural CD of Max Q, a newly-formed barbershop quartet, but the subject of considerable SPEBSQSA buzz because of the amazing pedigree of the group's members. Baritone Gary Lewis was a collegiate SPEBS champion prior to winning Gold with Platinum. Tenor Greg Clancy is Associate Director, and 26-year member of the Vocal Majority. Lead Tony De Rosa and bass Jeff Oxley are two of only 13 men who have won SPEBSQSA quartet Gold twice, De Rosa with Keepsake and Platinum, Oxley with Rapscallions and Acoustix. From the first strains of 'Smile Medley,' the opening cut, the sheer vocal and harmonic power of these men is obvious, as is the quality of their arrangements. 13 tunes, some of our favorites are 'If I Had My Way,' a jazzy, blue-note rendition of Van Morrison's 'Moondance,' an intricate 'Shenandoah,' 'When My Sugar Walks Down The Street,' 'Where Is Love,' the spiritual 'Shadrack,' Tony's soaring lead on 'Fare Thee Well, Love.' 'You Tell Me Your Dream,' and a powerful 'Sing, Sing, Sing.' Joe Connelly is the only man ever to have won an amazing 3 quartet Golds, but we wouldn't be at all surprised to see De Rosa and Oxley of the new Supergroup Max Q join him at the next Internationals. Our 'Discovery?' Max Q has a truckload of talent and they know how to use it! Songlist: Smile Medley (Smile, Darn Ya, Smile / Powder Your Face With Sunshine), Have A Little Talk With Myself, If I Had My Way, Moondance, Shenandoah, When My Sugar Walk Down the Street, Where Is Love?, Shadrack, Fare Thee Well, Love, Honey Medley (My Honey's Lovin Arms / Honey That I Love So Well), You Tell Me Your Dream, Sing, Sing, Sing, Hushabye My Three Sons : New Gang On The Corner This unique quartet has been making history for many years now. As members of the well-known Ditchfield Family Singers this father - Stephen Ditchfield - and his sons also perform as a barbershop quartet. Even when the boys were very young they started winning singing competitions and this recording marks their comeback as grown men who still retain their love of close harmony singing. Lots a great music here including some barbershop classics along with a variety of popular music from the '30's, '40's, and '50's. Songlist: There's a Brand New Gang on the Corner, Orange Colored Sky, Wait Till the Sun Shines Nellie, Little Green Apples, Jeepers Creepers, The Story of the Rose, The River of no Return, I May Be Wrong, Irish Blessing, Singing with my Dad, Where Is Love?, You Rise me up, If Ever I Would Leave You The Suntones : Masterwork Series Miami, Florida's Suntones, formed in 1957 singing innovative arrangements of "Old Black Magic" and Hi-Lo's songs, finally won SPEBSQSA Quartet Gold in 1961. They went on to record extensively and seek professional bookings outside of barbershop circles, causing them to perfect their act, and helping to create a world of possibilities for top-drawer barbershop groups in the entertainment industry. "Suntones" is a "best-of" collection of 23 songs, certainly tough choices given the large number of excellent recordings by the group. From the first cut, "Bye, Bye Blues," the final tune in their Gold-winning set that became a trademark for them, we see how special this group is. "After You've Gone," which begins straight, introduces a major 7th chord, jazzy 2nd chorus and wild and crazy tag. "If You Can't Tell the World She's A Good Little Girl," "Old Songs Medley" showed that even though they tended toward daring innovations, they never lost their love of the simple, "square" barbershop songs. "Danny Boy," "That Old Black Magic," "West Side Story Medley," "Jezebel," "Where Is Love," "Show Me Where The Good Times Are," "Tennessee Waltz," "Shrimp Boats" and "For All We Know" need to be listened to again and again to appreciate the chances the Suntones took, and how solid the barbershop fundamentals were that formed their base. "Suntones" is an amazing recording on many levels, and certainly mandatory listening for aspiring quartets to expand their horizons. Songlist: Bye Bye Blues, Emaline, After You've Gone, If You Can't Tell The World She's A God Little Girl, Old Songs Medley, Danny Boy, No, No, Nora, Finian's Rainbow Medley, That Old Black Magic, A Little Street Where Old Friends Meet, West Side Story Medley, It's A Most Unusual Day, Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring, Jezbel, Where Is Love?, Watch What Happens, As Time Goes By, Two Guy Medley, Show Me Where The Good Times Are, Tennessee Waltz, Shrimp Boats, Armed Forces Medley, For All We Know Vocal Majority : I'll Be Seeing You A diverse recording of great forties and fifties pop tunes ("My Funny Valentine," "Stormy Weather," "As Time Goes By"). Features a Puerling arrangement of "Stardust" and a beautiful "Where is Love." Some cuts include jazz band accompaniment; others include quartet cameos (Dealer's Choice, Acoustix) and two include a female soloist. Songlist: No Arms Can Ever Hold You (Like These Arms Of Mine), My Funny Valentine, Graduation Day/ It's A Blue World Medley, Stormy Weather, You'll Never Know, Where Is Love?, As Time Goes By, The Masquerade Is Over, Stardust, Mack The Knife, I'll Be Seeing You Vocal Majority : Something's Coming Founded in 1972 in Dallas, TX, and under the able baton of musical director Jim Clancy, the all-volunteer 140-plus voice male a cappella chorus is known for its mastery of technically demanding close harmony. The Vocal Majority holds an unprecedented eleven Gold Medals in International competitions of the Barbershop Harmony Society, making it the most successful musical organization of its kind in the world, and truly deserving of the title, "America's Premier Pops Chorus." The Chorus's repertoire encompasses music from the classics, jazz, patriotic, sacred, standards, barbershop and Broadway pops. "Something's Coming" is a long-awaited, all new recording from the VMC (which also features 2007 BHS Gold-winning Quartet MAX Q) of 11 Broadway pops hits. Our favorites include the title tune (from "West Side Story"), "What Kind of Fool Am I?" from "Stop the World--I Want to Get Off," "Luck Be A Lady" from "Guys and Dolls," "Aquarius" from "Hair," "Memory" from "Cats," "Somewhere," also from "West Side Story," "Ol' Man River" from "Showboat," and "Circle of Life" from "The Lion King." This veteran touring chorus nails every cut, at once powerful and subtle, with four-part harmonies that we can only describe as "magnificent." Treat yourself to some of the world's best entertainment, from the Vocal Majority! Songlist: Something's Coming, I'm On My Way, What Kind Of Fool Am I, Luck Be A Lady, Where Is Love?, Aquarius, Memory, Tonight, Somewhere, Ol' Man River, Circle Of Life Yumiko Matsuoka : To Every Thing There Is A Season Founder of legendary Boston-based Vocal Jazz group Vox One, Yumiko has always been one of our favorite vocalists and arrangers. She has two excellent collections of arrangements in the PAC catalog, "Collection Vol. 1" and "Collection Vol. 2." The Anthology "To Every Thing" is her first solo album, and it includes a piece Yumiko wrote for acoustic guitar for some friends' wedding, "Tsubasa," her arrangement of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes," performed by the Western Wind with Yumiko, and her marvelous arrangements of the English Traditional tunes "Scarborough Fair," "Black is the Color" and the title tune, performed by Boston Jazz Voices. The Western Wind also shines on Yumiko's arrangements of Lionel Bart's "Where Is Love" and Lennon/McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby." Yumiko's classically accompanied arrangement of Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind," her lovely arrangement of Joanie Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," performed by Syncopation; and the Scottish Traditional "Skye Boat Song," performed by Yumiko with the women of the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble, are all favorites. "To Every Thing" is a remarkable collection, highlighting the tremendous vocal, arranging and composing talents of Vocal Jazz master Yumiko! Songlist: Tsubasa (wings), And So It Goes, Scarborough Fair, Brett, Where Is Love?, Black Is The Colour, Blowin' In The Wind, Eleanor Rigby, To Every Thing There Is A Season, Georgia On My Mind, Both Sides Now, Skye Boat Song |
