"When the Saints Go Marching In", often referred to as "The Saints", is an American gospel hymn. Though it originated as a Christian hymn, it is often played by jazz bands. This song was famously recorded on May 13, 1938 by Louis Armstrong and his Orchestra. The origins of this song are unclear. It apparently evolved in the early 1900s from a number of similarly titled gospel songs including "When the Saints Are Marching In" (1896) and "When the Saints March In for Crowning" (1908).The first known recorded version was in 1923 by the Paramount Jubilee Singers on Paramount 12073. Although the title given on the label is "When All the Saints Come Marching In", the group sings the modern lyrics beginning with "When the saints go marching in". No author is shown on the label.

John Rutter has written vivid new arrangements of seven well-loved American spirituals for choir, with soloist Melanie and the BBC Concert Orchestra joining with the Cambridge Singers for this world premiere recording. Another notable 'first' is jazz legend George Shearing's captivating new cycle of Shakespeare settings, Songs and Sonnets. Those who associate George Shearing with instrumental jazz (and of course with his immortal Lullaby of Birdland) will be astonished and delighted at the youthful charm and skillful word-setting of this 81-year old master's choral writing. The final touch of sparkle is added by Proms favorite Wayne Marshall's piano, with Malcolm Creese on bass. To complete the album, John Rutter's own Birthday Madrigals - written in 1995 to celebrate George Shearing's 75th birthday - also receives their premiere recording. "Do You Hear The People Sing" was recorded at the CCC's four and a half week tour of South Africa in the summer of 1996. The 44 choir members, of many races, perform spirituals, gospel songs, African, Columbian and Korean songs, "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess, and a medley of West Side Story tunes. The excitement of these live performances shines through, as does the spirit and talent of these young voices. Songlist: Deo Dicamus Gratias, Bells, Wanting Memories, Mamelani, Unonkal, Nodle Kangbyon, Prende la Vela, Plink, Plank, Plunk, Stomp Your Foot, Summertime, West Side Story Medley, Do You Hear the People Sing?, Elijah Rock, He Never Failed Me Yet, When the Saints Go Marching In Detroiters/Golden Echoes : Old Time Religion "Old Time Religion" collects the complete recordings, including several alternate takes, of two of the hottest Gospel quartets of the lat 40s, the Detroiters and the Golden Echoes. These are all from the archives of Specialty Records, who were best known for numerous records by their four most famous groups, the Pilgrim Travelers, The Swan Silvertones, the Soul Stirrers and the Five Blind Boys of Alabama. With the focus on these four, some wonderful groups that weren't as well recorded have sadly been overlooked, an oversight that Legends of Gospel aims to correct. Although these great black Gospel groups formed in big cities, the Golden Echoes in Los Angeles and the Detroiters, of course, in the Motor City; they had their roots in Texas, the hotbed of great quartet singing. While the Echoes remained a quartet, the Detroiters added two more singers and a pianist, rare for Gospel groups at the time. They were also noted for their unusual focus on "Mother" songs, recording a trilogy of them, "Mother on the Train," "Mother, Don't Cry About Your Son" and "Mother, I Need Your Prayer." There are 15 spirited cuts by the Detroiters here, including 3 alternate versions, a few other favorites are "Ride On King Jesus," "Let Jesus Lead You," and the previously unissued "He Walks With Me," "Body and Soul" and "Shady Green Pastures." The Golden Echoes have 11 cuts, three of them alternates; some favorites are the previously unissued "Where Shall I Be (When The First Trumpet Sounds)," "Down on My Knees," "I'm So Happy (In the Service of the Lord)," "Waiting and Watching," and "Yield Not to Temptation." This is wonderful, joyous revival-meeting stuff from two of Gospel's best! Songlist: He Walks With Me, Mother on the Train, Mother on the Train, Angels Watching Over Me, I Trust In Jesus, Ride on King Jesus, Ride on King Jesus, Mother Don't Cry About Your Child, Let Jesus Lead You, Mother, I Need Your Prayer, Old Time Religion, Old Time Religion, Sometimes, Body and Soul, Shady Green Pastures, Where Shall I Be (When the First Trumpet Sounds), Down on My Knees, My Life is in His Hands, When the Saints go Marching In, When the Saints go Marching In, When I Lay My Burden Down, I'm So Happy (In the Service of the Lord), Waiting and Watching, Yield Not to Temptation, Yield Not to Temptation, Yield Not to Temptation Keepsake : Without A Song Florida's mighty Keepsake have received the musical baton from their progenitors the "Suntones" and the "Buffalo Bills." "Without a Song" (the CD) takes its title from the song of the same name, which was performed, first by the Bills, and then the Suntones, as a signature piece in their repetoire. In addition to that aforementioned gem, which closes the CD, thirteen other examples of Keepsake's artistry, including the all-American "When The Saints Go Marchin' In," "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" and "Down Where the Swanee River Flows" are performed. "I'm Going to Live Till I Die" features one of the many audacious Keepsake tags, where the tenor voice soars in a holding pattern over the remaining three, floating, seemingly without effort, on an endless supply of air. Finally, as the four voices join together in the final glorious chord, the sun breaks through the clouds in all its magnificence. This is barbershop at its best. Songlist: When the Saints Go Marching In, Sweet, Sweet Roses of Morn, Lullaby In Ragtime, 'Way Down Yonder in New Orleans/ That Aint' Heaven, That's New Orleans, Down Where The Swanee River Flows, My Melancholy Baby, I'm Gonna Live Till I Die, Mona Lisa, Blue Skies, May I Never Love Again, I'll Fly Away, I'll Walk With God, Bass Part, Without a Song King Sisters : The King Family Show /The King Family Album The first two of a staggering six albums that the King Family recorded for Warner Brothers in the space of two years, these came out in early 1965, the same year their weekly ABC TV series The King Family Show was becoming a fan favorite. Their debut The King Family Show! contains many of the favorites performed by the Family on TV and plays like an episode of their series-there's even a commercial break at the mid-point by King Kids Cam & Laurette, a popular, and humorous, feature of their weekly show. And we round out this release with two more CD debuts - the Warner Brothers singles by The King Cousins originally released in 1965, the Phil Spectorish Just One Smile and girl group homage Today I'm in Love! Deluxe liner notes with a treasure trove of rarely seen photos make this a true King Family fan's delight. Four guys showed up, and they went on to form pioneering a cappella legends The Persuasions. The last few albums of these giants of a cappella have applied their trademark harmonies to their favorite music-a gospel collection, a children's record, the music of Frank Zappa (who gave them their first record contract), the Beatles and the Grateful Dead. "A Cappella Dreams" is a tasty smorgasbord of 15 hits. "I Have a Dream" is a Solomon Burke song based on the words of Martin Luther King, three songs made famous by Elvis, Mac Davis' "In the Ghetto," "Don't" and "Good Luck Charm," Tom Jones' "She's A Lady," Otis Redding's "Dock of the Bay," "Ain't No Sunshine," the Four Tops' "When She Was My Girl," the Brook Benton song "Rainy Night in Georgia," Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love"-these are anthems of a cappella soul. The Persuasions give us fans a gift with every recording and every live performance! Nice liner notes with all the lyrics. Songlist: I Have A Dream, There's A Train, In the Ghetto, She's A Lady, Don't Good Luck Charm, Ain't No Sunshine, Dock of the Bay, The Clock, Steal Away, When She Was My Girl, Rainy Night in Georgia, Please Send Me Someone to Love, Peace in the Valley, When the Saints Go Marching In Phoenix Boys Choir : Let Freedom Sing Winner of a Grammy for Best Choral Performance, The Phoenix Boy Choir sings its patriotism through its performance. Other veterans of high school and college quartets came in and out of the group after its formation in 1964, helping it place 8th in Boston in 1965, but dropping to 21st in 1966. Adding Tenor Al Mau and Bass Phil Foote seemed to turn the Continentals around, and the group came out of nowhere to win Silver at the Los Angeles International in 1967. In 1968 they won it all, edging out the Golden Staters. One of the clearest, strongest leads ever to step up to a Barbershop mike, Ted Bradshaw shines on everything from "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," and "The Masquerade is Over," to the classic "I Believe," and the others match him note for breathless note. Sweet, Pure, Classic; in short, Incredible!
