It's no surprise that The King's Singers have recorded a huge number of love songs on all kinds of albums over the last fifty years. Some of these were albums devoted to love songs like Chanson d'amour and Romance du soir. Other albums couldn't help but include music about love, although their theme was actually different. This album, Love Songs, is a chance to revisit some of the ensemble's favorite tracks that they've recorded over the last two decades, compiled from across their back catalogue with Signum Records. The tracks they've chosen have come from five different albums, released between 2008 and 2017. Rather than trying to take in any of the enormous number of classical love songs from the back catalogue, the group wanted to focus on some of the best folk songs, jazz standards, and pop songs that have featured in King's Singers concerts throughout their history. Arguably the most popular a cappella group of all time, whose flawless harmonies grace over 30 finely-crafted CDs and a slew of songbooks in the Primarily A Cappella online catalog, we will assume that you know how good these six British men really are. So let's talk about some of the 16 carefully-selected songs: Billy Joel's classic "She's Always A Woman," James Taylor's sublime "You Can Close Your Eyes," the traditional joyous round "The Gift to Be Simple," Stephen Stills' harmonic CSN&Y gem "Helplessly Hoping," some wonderfully-arranged spirituals, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Deep River," "The Water is Wide" and "Steal Away," all of which feature some sweet deep bass leads. They are arranged by group member Phillip Lawson, Bob Chilcott and Peter Knight, and then sung as beautifully as you can imagine by the King's Singers. In its first nine months, Reno, NV-based Q took first place at the divisional level (California/northern Nevada), at the district level (not only winning its district, but outscoring every quartet in all sixteen SPEBSQSA districts) and finished 28th at the world championships in Montreal. Coaching other quartets at the Sacramento Area Quartet Workshop and student quartets at the Northern California Youth Harmony Camp, receiving standing ovations for its music and witty jokes at every barbershop show it headlined, Q went into the studio to record The First Year, its debut CD. What a year! The four talented women of Rumors had been singing together for five years when they were named 1999 International Sweet Adelines Quartet Champions. Since then Charla, Judy, Dale and Peggy have honed and perfected their audience-pleasing a cappella style, and sublime arrangements by premier arranger Anna-Maria Nystrom have added a new dimension to their recordings and live performances. "Something," the group's 4th excellent CD has 12 songs, some favorites are: the Motown classic "Ain't No Sunshine," "Aubrey" (featuring soloist Steve DeCrow), "When She Loved Me" from Toy Story 2, "God Only Knows," Carole King's "I Feel The Earth Move," Sting's marvelous hit "Fields of Gold,"Ê the title tune and Harold Arlen and CY Harburg's "Over the Rainbow." As a group, Georgia-based State Line Grocery is fairly new on the Barbershop scene, having been formed in July of 2003. They immediately won the 2003 Dixie District Quartet Championship in the fall, and went on to qualify for the Barbershop Harmony Society's Internationals in Louisville in 2004. They placed 11th at the 2005 BHS International competition in Salt Lake City, and recently placed 4th at the Denver Internationals! Baritone Heath, Bass Drew, Lead Tim and Tenor Dylan, all longtime BHS veterans and district champs, are turning a lot of heads with the kind of drum-tight harmonies, sweet leads and ringing chords we find on "Paper." 14 songs, some favorites are "The Glory of Love," "Everything Old is New Again," Randy Newman's poignant "When She Loved Me," "Too Marvelous for Words," "On the Sunny Side of the Street," "His Eye is On the Sparrow" and Hank Williams' "I Saw the Light." Storm Front : Storm Warning   

Much has changed for Denver-based Storm Front since they recorded their debut CD four years ago. They have performed in half the states in the USA, coached at numerous music schools around the country, and have twice been recognized as one of the top 10 Barbershop quartets in the world by the Barbershop Harmony Society, winning a 3rd place Bronze in 2007 and sixth place in 2008. "Storm Warning" has 14 winners that highlight the group's great comedic sense, ability to entertain and wonderful harmonies. Rodgers & Hart's "Have You Met Miss Jones?," Lerner and Loewe's "On The Street Where You Live," "Swinging on a Star," the silly group standard "Filbert the Frog," "Bare Necessities," Fats Waller's "There's Gonna Be the Devil to Pay," "The 12 Days of Christmas," "Bugler's Holiday" and "There's Something About That Name" are favorites. We especially love Barbershop groups that are funny, and Storm Front is one of the best!

We're of the almost certainly biased opinion that the Harmony Sweeps Finals are the best a cappella shows in the world. Imagine 8 groups, who have come in first in Regional competition with 10 other groups in places like New York, Boston, the Bay Area, Chicago and LA, performing before a packed auditorium in San Rafael, CA for 12 minutes each, for the coveted National Championship. Each year outdoes the last, and "electric" doesn't do justice to the 2003 Finals. There are 18 songs on the CD, two from each group and two from '02 Champs, and very funny hosts, LA's Perfect Gentlemen, "Gimme Some Skin" and the guitar accompanied (!) "Meanest Thing You Ever Did Was Kiss Me." The Bay Area's hilarious Moosebutter brings us "Psycho, The Musical," winner of "Best Original Song" (lyrics), and their trademark parody, "Star Wars," part of a set that won them 2nd place honors. The Pacific NW's Second Chance contribute a funky "Go Tell It On The Mountain" and the very funny beach song parody "Sand Down My Pants." LA's Undivided Musical Group sing "Amarte Mas" and nail Ward Swingle's arrangement of "Mission Impossible Theme." Boston's All About Buford do wonderful covers of the Gershwins' "Summertime" and Rodgers & Hart's "My Funny Valentine." Chicago's Nightwatch sing two songs from their infamous "Diner Set" (complete with ballistic donut), "Truck Drivin' Man" and "Yes Sir, That's My Baby," and New York's very smooth Cadence covers "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and "Tempted' beautifully. Denver's Groove Society gets the crowd up and rocking with "You're No Good" and the classic "Listen to the Music." Unbelievably, as good as all these groups were, the best was saved for last, Mid-Atlantic winner Idea of North from Australia, who shine on "Mas Que Nada" (which won the David Lichtman Award for Best Arrangement) and Randy Newman's heart-tugging "When She Loved Me." Idea of North got the nod from the judges, and won Audience Favorite, while Moosebutter and Cadence placed 2nd and 3rd. A chorus of "Goodnight Sweetheart" later we were all walking out of beautiful Marin Veterans Auditorium, not believing how good a show we had just seen and heard!
