The song is sung by a young man to his lover, and is about his plans of growing old together with her. Although the theme is ageing, it was one of the first songs McCartney wrote, when he was 16. It was on the Beatles playlist in their early days as a song to perform when their amplifiers broke down or the electricity went off. Both George Martin and Mark Lewisohn speculated that McCartney may have thought of the song when recording began for Sgt. Pepper in December 1966 because his father turned 64 earlier that year
Lennon said of the song, "Paul wrote it in the Cavern days. We just stuck a few more words on it like 'grandchildren on your knee' and 'Vera, Chuck and Dave' ... this was just one that was quite a hit with us." In his 1980 interview for Playboy he said, "I would never even dream of writing a song like that."
Release Date: 1966 on the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

This is the group's impressive debut CD of 13 songs, beginning with a jazzy, light "Chile Con Carne," a sweet Ward Swingle-arranged "All the Things You Are," and a ringingly harmonic cover of James Taylor's "That Lonesome Road." Doo-Wop classics "Come Go With Me" and "In the Still of the Night" segue nicely into Billy Joel's anthem "And So It Goes," a bluenote "There Will Never Be Another You" grows upbeat and scattish, "Tico Tico" puts a margarita in our hand and pulls us onto the dance floor, and finally we have Ward Swingle's sparkling arrangement of "Country Dances." Excellent stuff from this fast-rising Chicago octet, who we will be expecting to see at the '06 Sweeps Finals! Songlist: Chili Con Carne, When I'm Sixty-Four, All the Things You Are, Come Go With Me, That Lonesome Road, I'm With You, In the Still of the Night, And So It Goes, There Will Never Be Another You, Scat Blues, Tico Tico, A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square, Country Dances LoveNotes Quartet : Moments To Remember Brittany, Tenor, age 14; Mary, Bass, age 15; Mia, Lead, age 14 and Caitlin, Baritone, age 17 are lovely, casually dressed and very young-looking (2 of them still have braces) in a photograph on the front of the one-page liner notes of their debut CD, "Moments to Remember." On the photo on the back, they look much more mature, nicely coifed and wearing matching gowns, earrings and, oh yeah, Sweet Adelines medals around their necks. On July 22nd Sweet Adelines held their 2005 "Rising Star Quartet Contest," for groups age 25 or younger, in Greenville, South Carolina, and Sunnyvale, CA's UnderAge took the Gold! "Moments" is an impressive first CD, with 11 excellent covers, some favorites: "Whatever Happened to the Old Songs," "Mister Sandman," "This Little Piggy Went to Market," the title tune, "One Fine Day," "Java Jive," "Sentimental Journey" and the final cut, Billy Joel's "And So It Goes." We think it's a very good move on Sweet Adelines' part to encourage younger singers, and we expect great things of UnderAge! Songlist: Whatever Happened To The Old Songs, Will It Be Me This Time, Mister Sandman, This Little Piggy Went To The Market, The Moment I Saw Those Eyes, Moments To Remember, One Fine Day, Java Jive, When I'm Sixty-Four, Sentimental Journey, And So It Goes New Tradition Quartet : Sgt. Pepler's Homely Tarts Pub Band If you're not comfortable laughing out loud, maybe you should pass this one by. I guess you could always shut your ears during the gags and just listen to these 1985 International Champions sing. You see, they're entertainers. The award winning singing is the basis of the act but the goal of these four is to bring joy and laughter into the world. Along the way to this goal they become the Marx Brothers and their gags are just as goofy as the originals. Spoofing the members of Star Trek will bring delight to Trekkies and Anti-Trakkies alike. It is a double CD release. The first disc is a reissue of their two albums. The second is a series of surprises from live performances. Though it sounds as though it was recorded from the audience, a piece simply called "Trombones" features all the members on vocal trombone and is wonderful in spite of the fidelity. As we love both laughter and song, this gets our enthusiastic recomendation! Songlist: Gentlemen, Hello!, The Marx Brothers Opener, Carnival Barker(intro), Lydia (The Tattooed Lady), Jeepers Creepers, Tuxedo Junction, I Want You To Be My Sweetheart, I Used To Call Her Baby, Air Medley, Anti-Marriage Medley, Having To Say Goodbye (intro), So Long Mother, World War One Medley, Once In A While, Smile, Parade Medley, I'm So Alone With A Crowd, Trickle Trickle, It Was Almost Like A Song, Hallelujah, Barbershop!, Showbiz Medley, That Charlie Chaplin Walk, If I Had The Heart Of A Clown, When I'm Sixty-Four, Clown Medley New Tradition Quartet : Masterworks Series Masterworks Series Association of International Champions brings us one of their popular, generous, "best-of" compilations of the work of a Barbershop Harmony Society Gold Medal winner, in this case, 29 songs by 1985 champs The New Tradition. They won the Gold in Marx Brothers costumes, and begin this collection with "Marx Brothers Opener" and "Lydia, the Tattooed Lady," continuing with favorites "Tuxedo Junction," "I Used To Call Her Baby," "Air Medley," "Anti-Marriage Medley," "World War I Medley," "Showbiz Medley," "That Charlie Chaplin Walk," "Star Trek Opener," "Enterprise Medley" and "Barbershoppers Parody." This is all very funny stuff, sung with the ringing harmonies and soaring leads we would expect from Barbershop Harmony Society champions. In short, this album is great entertainment from the first cut to the last, from The New Tradition, one of the most innovative and funniest Barbershop International Champions! Songlist: Gentlemen, Hello! (intro), Marx Brothers Opener, Carnival Barker (intro), Lydia, The Tattooed Lady, Jeepers Creepers, Tuxedo Junction, I Want You To Be My Sweetheart, I Used To Call Her Baby, Air Medley, Anti-Marriage Medley, Having To Say Goodbye (intro), So Long Mother, World War I Medley, Once in a While, Smile, Parade Medley, I'm So Alone With A Crowd, Trickle Trickle, It Was Almost Like A Song, Hallelujah Barbershop!, Showbiz Medley, That Charlie Chaplin Walk, Heart of a Clown, When I'm Sixty-Four, Be a Clown/ Send in the Clowns, Star Trek Opener, Enterprise Medley, Star Trek (dialogue), Barbershoppers Parody, Star Trek Opener Overboard : Help! Boston's all-male professional a cappella sextet Overboard put on an incredible show at the Harmony Sweepstakes Finals in San Rafael this month (in fact, it was the strongest field we have ever seen, and a tremendous show!). Group member, arranger, producer and tracker Nick Girard took on the massive task of rearranging 12 of Lennon & McCartney's most beloved hits from "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "The White Album," using only vocal percussion and faux instruments (yes, that includes faux harp at the beginning of "She's Leaving Home!). "In My Life," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," "Taxman" (which segues into "I Saw Her Standing There"), "Something," "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window," "Come Together," "Good Day Sunshine," "When I'm 64," "The Fool on the Hill" - Overboard nails every one of them, seemingly effortlessly. "Help!" is a tour de force, an a cappella masterpiece by a group fast on its way to stardom! Songlist: In My Life, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Taxman, Something, Got to Get You Into My Life, She's Leaving Home, She Came In Through the Bathroom Window, Come Together, Good Day Sunshine, When I'm Sixty-Four, For No One, The Fool On The Hill, Hello Goodbye, I Saw Her Standing There (reprise), The Long and Winding Road, A Day In the Life, Eleanor Rigby, Good Night, Help!, Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight, Getting Better, Get Back, The End/In My Life (reprise) The Swingle Singers : Ticket To Ride While the Swingles first won acclaim for their arrangements of Bach fugues, they have been performing Beatles songs as part of their live concerts for many years. Though Ward is no longer part of the eight-voice mixed ensemble, he acts as musical advisor, and the group continues on, revitalized by fresh new talent. A record of all-Beatles material is surely a natural! The aural landscape designed by the Beatles, with George Martin at the helm, is ably reproduced here, entirely a cappella, of course. Some adaptations swear almost complete allegiance to the originals, but others, such as "Norwegian Wood," embellish with subtle, yet distinct tonal flavors. The tempo of "Lady Madonna" is gently suppressed, with harmonic emphasis on the seventh. "All My Loving" is a sweetly earnest ballad. "Ticket To Ride" shows the Swingle Singers ready to meet the 21st century, with a winning mix of the old and the new. Songlist: Ticket To Ride, Penny Lane, Revolution, Day Tripper, Norwegian Wood, Birthday, Lady Madonna, Yesterday, Strawberry Fields Forever, Drive My Car, Blackbird / I Will, When I'm Sixty-Four, The Fool On The Hill, All My Loving, I Am The Walrus, Goodnight T Minus 5 : Road Trip We know we're in for a good time with the first rock-solid vocal percussion beats of War's "Low Rider" come on T-minus 5's "radio," which segues into Sly and the Family Stone's rock anthem "Dance to the Music," an electronic-funky, faux-horned masterpiece. Group member Shawn Satterthwaite contributes the sweet, romantic "Your Love," other nice originals are "Wrapped Up In You" by Wayne Kirkpatrick, and " Midnight Daze" by T Minus 5. Excellent covers of Lennon/McCartney's "When I'm Sixty-Four," "Mayberry," Barry Manilow's "One Voice," "He Still Loves Me" (arranged by our friend Richard "Bob" Green, and The Guess Who's "American Woman" add to the good feeling. We loved T-Minus 5 at the 2001 Harmony Sweeps Finals, and their great harmonies and down home song selection have only gotten better. Every song on "Road Trip" is a winner! Songlist: Low Rider, Dance to the Music, I'll Still be Loving You, Your Love, Wrapped Up In You, One Voice, Midnight Daze, American Woman, When I'm Sixty-Four, Mayberry, He Still Loves Me, Show Me the Way |
